This song came out when I was 12. It was probably the second song that I was ever aware of by Kenny, after The Gambler. This is "real country", unlike the garbage that is falsely referred to as "country music" today. There's a lot of storytelling in real country music, and they knew how to lay a difficult story between the lines so that radio would still play it back then.
There's some subtext in the song, as there is in a lot of (real) country music. For example, when he reaches above the fireplace, it is natural to assume that he is reaching for a rifle. Which was often kept on hooks above the fireplace. But instead it's his daddy's picture. Denoting a thoughtful man, not prone to violence.
Also, there's a controversy regarding the "Gatlin boys". There was/is a very popular country band of brothers called The Gatlin Brothers, also worthy of being checked out. But the song is not a slight against them. Although the author of the song might have had a dislike of them. Kenny didn't intend it to be about them of course. The surname Gatlin is actually used a lot in western novels and movies, imho because it can have a sinister sound. Also there was an early machine gun, used in the American Civil War called a Gatling gun.

The second time that line is used, I think the way the word 'considered' is used is different, in that they USED to consider him a coward, but his retribution ended that opinion, and that from that day forward, they didn't think that of him, and would probably think twice about judging somebody a coward.

Sometimes you have to fight. I'm Chinese and my family immigrated to a rural town in the USA. I learned English and went to a public school in the second grade. When I was in middle school, I was bullied in gym: Pulling my shorts down. There were two bullies. One was shorter and muscular. The other was lean and taller. As we were walking down the stairs after gym, one of them step on the back of my foot. I almost tripped and fell down the stairs. I turned around and saw the two of them. I just took the muscular and started punching his face even after he fell down. The coach had pulled me off. I was suspended and woite an essay. The coach never apologized for allowing the previous instances to happen. He did look sorry with his eyes down. The bullies never touched me again.

Bullies are almost the lowest of the low, barely above a coward. I am sorry you had to go thru such a terrible time. What is worse is an adult knew what was going on and let him/her bully someone else. Females are just as bad to other females. I am glad you came out ok. Learn to draw the line when you see that behavior from others. It is a hard lesson to learn, especially at a young age.

@@johoney5458 Thank you. I'm Chinese but I was born in Saigon during the Vietnam War. After the North Vietnam won, they started rounding up Chinese for fear of spies. My family had to flee, paying passage for a boat with hundreds like us with sitting room only and rice soup once a day. We spent ten months in a refugee camp first in a tent and then to permanent area with nothing but dirt. My father managed to borrow an ax. He and my second brother managed cut down small branches to make a bed. We finally got a tarp to cover the roof made by branches. Before we just had long grass which leaked rain. My family all slept together: Father, mother, grandmother, three sons, three daughters. We could make a small fire in the dirt next to the bed. We never had any meat except some small fish when my father managed to borrow a net to go to the shore. The Red Crosss would provide rice and canned fish which was nice. I still had fun with the next family's kids. We didn't speak the same language but I eventually learned theirs. We mostly point to things and say the word. It was ten months before a church in Virginia sponsored all 11 of us. My mother finally gave birth to my youngest brother. He lives in NYC now.

My sister was having trouble finding money for college so she decided to to enlist to become available for ROTC. I, too, was having a hard time finding a job. I took her to the recruiting office. Since it was an enlisted recruiter, he didn't tell me there was an officer option. I graduated with GPA of 3.2 which I wasn't proud of. The enlisted recruiter said I should enlist as well. My boot camp commanders were harsh. They made me a yeoman which carrying a bag. They even painted a bulls eye on it so every other boot cammanders would mash me (jumping jacks, push-ups, eight count body builders) every time they saw me. My boot camp commanders were also nice because they were trying to build up my confidence and strength as I was a thin man. That's part of the military. One of my boot commanders even told another recruit that I was the smartest man in the company. They said I apply for OCS. It took me a year and three months before I became an officer. I'm so sorry you went through that. Indigenous people of my community still deal with that racism today. It feels to us like every nationality but ours is accepted and this is where my people came from!!! A friend of mine was in line to buy formula for the baby's bottle, and everyone in line after her was muttering and irritable when the cashier walked away to get the formula from a locked shelf. One of the people in line commented "they wouldn't have to lock it up if YOUR people weren't stealing it!"
This wasn't years ago, this was months ago!!!
Racism in america is still going on and I hate it!!!
I am in my in my 50's now, dealing with it my entire life, and my ancestors did NOT immigrate here. We were here first and all the other races that come here get treated better than we do!!

Great reaction. You know who taught me this lesson best? My four-year-old son! He was being picked on at pre-school. Another little boy kept hitting him. I taught my son not to hit back, but to use his words. Stay away when he could and yell for him to stop and leave him alone when he bothered him. It didn't work, and one day my son just finally hit him and knocked him down. Guess what? The little bully never bothered him again. Well, this mom learned her lesson. My son is now 30-years-old. He is still the same way. He will take it and be respectful...to a point, but he will stand up for himself and his family if ever necessary.

Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lady", "Lucille", "Through the Years", "She Believes In Me", "You & I" (written by the Bee Gees) etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.

The way the line "Everyone considered him the coward of the county" is used as both the beginning and ending lines of this song, in my opinion, shows dramatically how context can radically change the meaning of a sentence. The first time the line "Everyone considered him the coward of the county" was a straight description, that up until that event, he had not been shown to act in defense. He had a known history of avoiding conflict and fighting, and backing down from confrontations, so the people around him could safely make an insulting assumption.
The second time that line is used, I think the way the word 'considered' is used is different, in that the public USED to consider him a coward, but his retribution ended that opinion, and that from that day forward, they didn't think there was any cowardice in him, and would probably think twice about judging somebody a coward.
Tommy's father gave a couple critical lessons in his final words, to avoid conflict when possible, and that combat is not required to be an adult. Tommy's experience reveals the unpleasant truth that some people will make conflict avoidance impossible by committing intolerable acts. When the Gatlin boys commit their atrocity on Becky as a group, Tommy seems to recognize the deeper meaning of his father's words, that some trouble can't be walked away from without consequences. The consequences of walking away would be intolerable to Tommy, so he sought a public resolution to the crime, acting against a more violent group. The song implies that the Gatlin boys were only beaten until unconscious, but it doesn't actually specifically say that they survived the fight, only what Tommy said as the last one hit the floor.
From the point of view of somebody in that county, Tommy's reputation probably went from being a quiet, probably cowardly man to being that of a peaceful man, until he's pushed hard against limits, at which time he will act decisively.

What I love about this song is that it demonstrates the difference between being peaceful vs. being a pushover. Being peaceful means not getting caught up in stupid ego games, it means looking for ways to solve problems without violence, it means not being the aggressor. It _doesn’t_ mean refusing to defend yourself or others. It _doesn’t_ mean allowing evil to pass by unchallenged. It _doesn’t_ mean you never take a moral stand. People will draw their lines in different places, true, but someone who has _no lines,_ who will do nothing to stop the monsters in this world - _that_ is true cowardice. You don’t have to fight TO BE a man, but sometimes you have to fight when you ARE a man, or a person of integrity of any sex.
In response to your question, as a christian I think Jesus is too often misinterpreted as advocating passivity in the face of evil. But this is the same Jesus that drove the moneylenders from the temple. He was not passive. And this is the same God that ordered the Israelites to drive out/destroy a people that were engaging in infant human sacrifice. And this is the same God that sent the Flood after the world had become utterly corrupt and full of violence. God demonstrates patience with our sinful nature, but He does have limits. I think, for many people, they want a simple narrative, a black and white set of rules to follow.

If you want to see how it ended they made a movie with Kenny Rogers as the uncle and the name of the movie is the same as the song ( COWARD of the COUNTY ) !! It shows as a young man he tried to live with honor for his father and not get into fights all the time , but when that happened to her he fought for her honor and to teach them not to mess with him or his family. In a lot of ways it was a beautiful movie. I loved your reaction that shows that you have a lot of honor God bless you and your family , as a people we need to remember it doesn't matter what color or Nation you come from we all bleed red and we all come from God. Much love sent to you and your family stay healthy and safe God bless. In case you need to know I'm a 70-year-old woman from the south in America who believes hating someone for who or what they are is a load of (. Please excuse my language. ) BULLSHIT !!!!!!!! Praise God let us stop the hating for really and truly, no real reason at all to hate. 🙏🙏🙏🥺😢😢😢😢😢😭😭😭

My mom’s Kenny Rogers album was part of her Saturday morning house cleaning repertoire. I miss her. We saw him live at the old Bangor Auditorium in Bangor, Maine in the mid 1980s. It was raining, and the roof leaked. Someone gave him an umbrella to use on stage. 😂

A very serious subject, we understand not being ready for it. We weren't either. However, we cheer when Tommy gets them. Great storytelling for sure. Kenny has a ton of huge hits. Many have already named them here. As to your question, we are not Jesus. I am a female and I was taught to never back down from a fight. The first fist fight I had was with a big bully when I was 5 years old ( he was around the same age ). I never looked for fights, I just wouldn't be bullied. I just wanted to thank you for your reaction.

It's a great song. Everyone has their limit, that line you do not cross, and if you do, not even God will help you. The Gatlins more than crossed the line and frankly deserved that beating they got. It's notable that it doesn't sound like anyone trued to stop the fight, either. Makes me think the Gatlins had a long history of causing harm.
Not music related, but look up the story of Ken McElroy. A entire town reached its limit with him.
If you like story songs, check out "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". Originally done by Vicki Lawrence but the cover by Reba McIntyre is better known.
Speaking of Reba, her cover of "Fancy" by Bobbie Gentry is another great story song. Check it out.

I was in middle school. I was a tiny little 70-pound girl and small for my age. I was bullied for 2 years. It was pure torture, but I was taught not to fight or hit. Well, 8th grade came around, and I hoped I wouldn't be bullied that year... but a girl began the tell-tale signs of starting to bully. I got up and went after her with fists flying!!!
We both got sent to the principal's office!!! He looked at both of us and asked what was going on. I told him I'd been bullied 2 years and no one helped me at all. This year I'm NOT going to be bullied!!! He was stone quiet and said, "ok" and sent us back to class!!! 😆 🤣 😂 the girl complained to me that I hit her in the neck!!! That's because I was short and was aiming for her face!!! 😆 🤣 😂 👊

The Gatlin boys in this song were a solid illustration that many people will not act according to the ideals of their faiths or cultures, but will act like pack predators, forcing their will on those they consider weak or vulnerable.
I don't think that Tommy's response was excessive, particularly because he did not act in secret, or from ambush. His confrontation was apparently nearly immediate, confronting the attackers as a group and in public. I think it's quite possible that during the fight the police were called by the bar tender or patrons, and that Tommy waited to meet them.

This song and gambler came out around the same time. I've always thought of both the songs as westerns. So this would've been in a setting where there was not police around to handle these situations. (The movie made off this actually set it during WWII.) Personally, I think Christians are called not to resort to violence in furtherance of our rights and revenge. I'd agree with you that is not easy to do. This song evokes a story where I find the violence in defense of Becky. I view self defense to stop a harm at the time and to stop harm to others as being times that violence is justified. Great reaction. Kenny had some other great ballads and some awesome love songs. "Lady" and "Love Will Turn You Around" are examples of his love songs. "Lucille" and "Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town" are more examples of his ballads.

  • @duckduckgoismuchbetter
    @duckduckgoismuchbetter Před 3 měsíci

Jesus did say, "Turn the other cheek," but he also advised the disciples in Luke 22 to buy a sword.
