Opel's Vectra or Vauxhall's Cavalier GSi 2000 was a very short-lived casting in Matchbox's lineup between 1990 and 1991 only. All were painted a metallic maroon with a grey plastic interior and featured a plastic body panel insert at the rear where the registration plate would be fitted. These were ill fitted and second hand examples are often found missing this piece, perhaps contributing to its fleeting production run.
Naturally, my example is missing the rear panel. But instead of restoring this, I decided to recreate a piece of racing history. The 1992 British Touring Car Championship finale at Silverstone, where the title could have been won by any one of three drivers; John Cleland, Tim Harvey, and Will Hoy. While John Cleland and his Vauxhall Cavalier would eventually finish second overall to Harvey, how the result came about was one of the most controversial events in BTCC history. In the video, I chronicle these events with some classic footage of the race tagged alongside my custom build of Cleland's Cavalier.

"I'm going for first" while Cleland flips Soper off always cracks me up. RIP Murray.
Absolutely. Probably 90% of why this incident was so memorable to me!
One of my favorite castings!
Great job. Used to watch BTCC back then. Murray Walker's commentary always made it.
I could literally binge watch your videos all day 😂
Super job as always! Very detailed work!
Fantastic custom my man! It looks so full of life and full of detail! Keep it up!
Touring car racing was the best, the BTC and the Aussie Touring Car races!
10/10 great job!
Cheers Marc D
Stunning job Jason.
Nice build, details and paint job 👍👍
Great job with this tribute!!!! Looking forward to the BMW
Had this one in my childhood and in the same color, too!
Awesome recreation! Can't wait to see you do the BMW's
your videos are always entertaining Jason, and your restos and customs are amazing, thanks so much for sharing your love for the hobby with us!!
I've only just noticed you've joined as a member! I'm so sorry I haven't seen, I never received a notification. I will add you to the video credits for the video due out a week Friday. Thanks for supporting the channel, I really appreciate it!
Absolutely amazing job!!
One of the best modification restorations I’ve seen
Looks awesome great job
Awesome custom and excellent info as usual on your videos
Really enjoyed this one excellent work 👍🏻
I made something similar, with an own designed livery on a Majorette Peugeot 405 mi16. I use the tip of a small modelknife to move the small decals around, it alows for precise control while being able to see what I'm doing.
Lovely Build, you definitely should build the 3 series 😎👍
For the U.S. equivalent seek out the Ken Squier call of the 1979 Daytona 500. "And there's a fight!..." or the Petty and Pearson battle at Daytona 1976. British DTM either doesn't air or get much promotion here in the U.S but that was AWESOME! Brilliant footage and custom diecast work! A true delight, but we've come to expect no less from you!
Thanks for the suggestions and the kind words!
Great job 👍
Excellent transformation, and what a race that was...I remember watching it on the day..🙂👍..
Very good Builders always my friend and I really enjoyed the decal but work I'm into customizing with decals myself I am a big Nascar fan but I enjoy auto racing no matter what it is and that looks like it would have been a good race to watch you are to have a blessed day and we'll talk to you next time
Great job you do amazing work!! One point, the Cadillac version was the "Catera" not Cimarron....
Looking at it, the Catera is related to the Opel/Vauxhall Omega I would have thought?
nicely done, and a real piece of BTCC history. or was it hystery? XD anyway, back when them races were still exciting. I eventually gave up on DTM, myself.
I used to work at an Opel dealership when these cars were new. funny thing is, the 4wheel drive demanded a different rear axle which took up so much space off the trunk, they either offered you a mini-wheel for spare, or you had to live with a tall bump on the trunk floor. the GSI2000 had the same rear axle, regardless of front wheel drive or 4WD. things were made interesting as Opel blew up the 2litre 16V with a turbocharger, revving it up from 150HP to 180 or 210HP if I recall correctly. quite a lot indeed, making the car interesting for the highway police... they could hunt sports cars with that thing. unfortunately not many Opel drivers knew how to handle a turbocharger, and ruined it or the engine pretty soon, and the car's reputation with it. and the Kadett-E GSI turbo went with it.
Nice job
Wow, that was great, so much information during the resto. Very well done and a great looking result. I've always liked the Calalier. We had a 2.0 GLS in white, it was fab.
stunning work Jason, amazing decals.
❤❤
Wow...
That is some fantastic work. I am very impressed. I think buying decals is probably a better option for me... My printer really doesn't provide a very good quality home made decal... (inkjet printer)... You did a superb job On this in my humble opinion.
Wow Jason I can't believe that is a humble Matchbox casting what a transformation. Are those 3D parts readily available?
They were available on the Waltonstyle shop but he is presently only selling 3D printed wheels and tyres. I imagine they will make a comeback at some point though
Love to do a 405
Great work but you need to lower the suspension
hi i love your content but please can you start using fine tiped brushes like 00 and 000 instead of that marker pen ? it will look way better on those really small details.
Which ones do you mean, the Artistro paint pens or the Molotow chrome pens?
Where to buy or make Castom dicast ?
Send me an email! My email address is in the video description
I love these do you sell them ?
I do commission work for custom versions of the castings but I don’t sell my stock items as I’ve usually got plans for them! Shoot me an email (in description) if interested
Did you buy the stickers or do them yourself
I bought this set from Waltonstyle
@@DieCastRestos I did have a quick look but can't find them on there page
No I think he has stopped selling decals at the moment. Might be back on sometime though
Nice job, you took a boring die cast and turned it into a piece of racing history.
Seems to me that the European/ UK Cavalier was much better than the American one.
Do a vauxhall for me plz.
I do commission work, just send me an email (address is in the description)
