- Captain Darrell Walton, whose uncle Ralph Walton went down with the Edmund Fitzgerald, shares his stories of his days as a ship keeper on the SS Middletown. According to Capt. Darrell, the ship, which began its career during World War II as an oil tanker and finished up its career as a Great Lakes freighter for the Columbia Transportation Company, was haunted through and through. Another fantastic vid. Years ago, my grandparents had a place on the St. Clair river, just up from the Salt Dock light, and we watched so many of those old vessels like the Middletown transit the river. The Meaford comes to mind...it was so many yrs later I found out that it was originally the J.H. Sheadle, survivor of the Great Storm of 1913. It was the last vessel to see the SS James Carruthers afloat, a wreck that is still to be discovered nearly 110 yrs later. The ships used to come up and down that river 10 an hour when I was young fella, what a great time to be there.
Around 1982, my mothers cousin was the shipkeeper for the SS Reserve in Toledo during the winter layup, and took us thru the boat. The then brand new MV Columbia Star(now American Century) was in lay up next to it, and we got to go aboard and thru it. Awesome day that was, and when Captain Darrell mentioned his dad was the chief engineer on the Reserve in an earlier video, brought back that great memory.

@@HistoryMysteryMan No Great Lake sails, only made it to Montreal. Mostly North Atlantic and a wee bit of Pacific. I would like to say about eight years ago I was on a submarine, it was night time in December. We were on the surface full buoyancy and took a wave that layed us over 45 degrees and drove us down 15 meters. It shocked me to think what this wave would have done to a fishing boat, we were 2500tons. No wonder boats disappear.

I could listen to him for hours. Some of my favorite memories as a boy was listening to my parents and other adult relatives, during the holidays, telling riveting stories in the evenings about local ghosts, and folklore from the Appalachian mountains where they were originally from. Captain Walton brings that back for me.

Gordon Lightfoots song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is beautiful, which may sound like an unusual thing to say, but it is, has always been and always will be a permanent Memorial to the 29 Seamen who died when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank on the 10th of November in 1975; the tribute that the Arthur M Anderson and her Crew paid to the Edmund Fitzgerald and her Crew that were lost (a couple of years ago on the Anniversary) was very emotional especially as the weather, at the time, was similar to that on the fateful day.

Went to Whitefish Point a year ago, in early October 2 years ago, indeed a special place. You can really feel a different energy there. Not like Michigan, not like anywhere. Cool. Oh! Also, the snow squall. I just remembered something. There is an ex law enforcement investigator from California, David Paulides. His youtube channel is "Canam Missing Project." He covers very mysterious disappearances of people going back to early 1900's sometimes, mostly in national parkland's in the U.S., but some in Europe. One of the stranger aspects of these cases is how in so many as soon as someone disappeared sudden rain or snow storms come up making it impossible to start search and rescue. There has always been something "spiritually" strange about the Fitzgerald event. Check out David's channel. Talk about yer hair standing on end.
The "Fitz" disappeared in a snow squall.
That's super interesting. Like Capt. Darrell said, the Anderson noted that the Fitz was in the middle of a big snow squall...and when the squall cleared, the Fitz was gone from the Anderson's radar. Interesting that you would bring up snow storms that impede search and rescue. My latest video is on the Starved Rock Murders of 1960 when 3 ladies were slain in Starved Rock State Park. They were not found until two days later after a foot of snow fell and covered up lots of the evidence. Thanks for watching! HMM
I was just up there last month at Whitefish Point. I never heard of where Gitche Gumee lives, but I knew that the lake was called that
The Indian lore says that is where the Great Spirit lives. We now call it the "Witch Of November"! I suggest you make the trip up there some time. It's across Whitefish Bay into Canada, at Coppermine Point. Lake Superior Provincial Park.
Middletown was another boat I sailed on during my career. Great boat crew and captain.

I was on the ss middletown when my husband was a merchant marine…back in the 90’s and early 2000’s…….i went for about ten days as my husband was an officer…not sure if it was haunted but all the frighters ive been on…ss armco….ss reserve…ss buckeye….and a diesel that I can’t remember..the roasch or something maybe…..anyway they were all kinda spooky! Especially in the tunnels when we were sailing…u could watch the body flex…augh!😬😳😳

Could listen to Captain Walton all day, and I live on the prairies of Canada, closest I've come to the Great Lakes is driving by them many years ago on a trip to Ontario!
I remember when Gordon Lightfoot's song debuted, it was so haunting, it actually frightened me as a young girl.
I know that there was a bit of debate when the Headstones released their version in 2019, but I quite like it, a different sound and apparently Lightfoot approved.
I also think it introduces a new generation to the history of the Edmund Fitzgerald, where they may have never heard of it previously.
You and me both Della...Capt. Darrell is so much fun to listen to. The prairies of Canada sound interesting to me. Yeah...the story of the Mighty Fitz grabs ahold, and never lets go. Lightfoot made the Fitz known around the world. Thanks for watching...HMM

No way would I have spent the night on her lest some infuriated ghost toss me over the side and into the icy waters of the Great Lakes.

Very well done and interesting history on that tanker turned bulk carrier. You bet those sailors were still there. I did a little research on the Gulfoil (prior to becoming the middletown) collision, the captain was killed with much of the crew. The captain had been with the company for 28 years and commanded tankers through WW2. A very tragic history. The captain in this video is correct, this is dangerous work.

I can remember a building trades teacher. Telling us. About his job as a kid . was to shovel coal into the furnace. He said ran out of coal. So he decide to try coal dust. Well it threw him back broke the door. They converted to gas.

If you have known any people who have survived in boats going through great storms, they will tell you : the radar screen just erupts - you can't make out anything!
Yeah...I remembering being in heavy seas on the Great Lakes tugs I worked on. Hard to get any real accurate info off the radar in rough weather. Thanks...HMM
Don, like previously mentioned, when boating with family in the 1970's, I vividly recall seeing/hearing the Middletown. It was always called a 'Steamer'. Isn't it interesting how some ships 'sail' through their lives with few incidents, while other ships .....well they have many issues and problems? Are those really haunted? Bad Luck? Human errors? Poor original ship design? All of the above?
Being a ship keeper would scare the heck out of me! It's such as shame about the Winter layup fires on the Roger Blough (destroyed in Sturgeon Bay, WI) and the St. Clair (destroyed in Oregon, Ohio). Poor safety procedures were involved in both situations. Bet those keepers were terrified during those events. Note: I don't believe either keeper necessarily did anything wrong. But just weren't notified appropriately. But still. Scary. Very Scary.
If you search "The Middletown Ice", you will find a video of this ship cutting through the ice in Maumee Bay, Ohio...blasting very closely by another ship. It's a pretty rare video of this ship and well worth watching Don.

I went to college by Iron Mountain in the UP and spent a great deal of time growing up at the tip of the thumb. The Great Lakes are fond memories and much more! Thank you for the memories!

Flight 2501 (1950) they found small wreckage and pieces of human remains. The remains were buried in a St. Joseph, MI graveyard. Also the Lee A. Tregurtha was awarded a battle star in 1943 prior to FDR’s death.

Listen, thank you. I came up to the Middletown in the spring with my sister as a tagalong for the day, it was docked by Toledo. She was helping a doctor give psychicals to the boat hands. I was all over that boat in amazement.. You look just like the guy that was cooking for everyone. I’m thinking, this was back in the late nineties..

Yes, the "Spirit's", liked the sound of my Fender "Hot Rod Deville" amplifier. 100 watts, with 6 ten inch speakers. They also seemed to like our version of "Hot Rod Lincoln" ha-ha
Sailed on the SS MIDDLETOWN for a season. I never experienced anything weird or unexplained. Spike Furtaw (RIP) was the Chief Engineer that season.
FWIW - She was one of the faster bulk carriers on the lakes. She also had the original "live front" switchboard in the engine room and was a DC powered ship. Fond memories.

Mamainse Harbour on the Canadian side is closest bit of land from the wreck. The Fitz is 10 miles straight out, due west.
As for the Great Lakes Triangle, Leonard Nimoy did the Triangle- UFO connection to the Fitz with the In Search Of series in the 70s.
Even as a kid, I thought that stuff was hogwash.

lets say 1973 ( I was 7? ) was at Lake Superior Provincial Park , ran full tilt off the beach into the lake ... got a few feet out & the world came to an abrupt end .... I came back up spitting out a mouth full of water ... the lake bottom abruptly dropped right off ... still laugh about that , one of the true shocks in my life lol

We all know the crew was confined to quarters with their cabin doors shut and bolted; I've always wondered as fast as the ship went down, if any of the crew was still alive (cabin acting as A sealed air pocket) when the ship came to rest on the bottom, and what was going through their minds as they waited for what they knew was in store for them, the since of dreed they felt at that time is unimaginable..... What if. I think that's where G. Lightfoot came up with the line. Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minute to hours....
When those doors are dogged down, they are air- and water-tight. So, it's conceivable that most lived until they ran out of oxygen and/or the pressure of depth took their lives. Either way, it all happened in total darkness and in brutal cold temps...haunting indeed. Thanks for watching...HMM
Ill tell u why things happen in that area..its something to do with how weather comes in over lake mich…i live smack dab on the west coast of mi and in the middle of that red line u have on that map…and when storms come across we get lightning strikes and real bad wind and always just seems to be in that stretch..we have had two big trees hit by lightning in our yard, knocking them.down and litterally across the street lightning hit a power pole setting it on fire….flames were 6 feet high …..bad weather just always comes right over our home and a bit to the north about 40 miles and south about forty miles….I bet it has something to do with these accidents

I sailed on the Middletown twice. No ghosts at all I can assure you, just bats once in a while.
Having been a "Shipkeeper" on several different vessels, "Armco, Reserve,, David Z. Norton and others, never did I experience any strange goings on like I did on two winters on the Middletown! Lots of people died on that boat over the years.
Maybe the spirits just liked sailing.
