- In part 2 of our coverage of the Daniel J. Morrell, Captain Darrell Walton brings more insight on the tragedy, and dives back into the Edmund Fitzgerald as we wrap up our Great Lakes Maritime coverage for the 2022-23 winter season. Capt. Darrell also brought along some interesting artifacts, including his father's (Wade Walton/Chief Engineer on the Edmund Fitzgerald) Z-Book, which includes signatures of Ernest McSorley, the Captain who went down with the Fitzgerald. Capt. Darrell also graced me, the History Mystery Man, with yet another gift to treasure...all that and so much more! Thanks for your incredible support of my channel. Now let's go racing! #HistoryMysteryMan #DanielJMorrell #EdmundFitzgerald #GreatLakes #Shipwrecks
Please keep Captain Darrell in the regular rotation of your interviews! He’s has such a wealth of knowledge and he’s a great storyteller as well!

If you watch the CZcams channel Maritime Horrors's video about the Daniel J Morrell there's a couple photos that I'm almost positive is the Townsend as it breaks in two. The video doesn't specify what ship it is in the photos but if it's not the Townsend it's a boat that looks very similar and having also broke in two.

Awesome wedding pic Darrell!! My Wife and I are from Soo area Canada- about to retire and hoping near whitefish bay ..when I see the northern lights across superior when we visit it reminds me of the Fitz and all crewmen that were lost. Don, another great video from you sir! Not sure if you would remember me but we met at one of the Fitzgerald events at the National Great Lakes Museum. We discussed Captain McSorley's residence in Ottawa Hills and you were fairly certain that he may have had another residence in Toledo. Anyway, congratulations on the success of your channel! Also, there is a fantastic book on the Morrell, the crew and their families by John DeBeck. Mr. DeBeck did a wonderful tribute to the men of the Morrell and there are many pictures of the men including John Schmidt in his book.

I really loved listening to this video and I especially loved seeing those old pics. And why I continue (like today) to tear up everytime I learn/listen to things in regard to the Edmund Fitzgerald, I have no idea since I have no real ties to it, other than me still working at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (it'll be 35 years this May 23rd) and knowing the story, the song, having seen many times over the years, the huge, beautiful painting of Mr. Edmund Fitzgerald still hung on the 8th floor in our hallway of our downtown Milwaukee Home Office - the Old South Building with the huge Greek columns built in 1914. As a Roman Catholic, like Mr. Fitzgerald, I don't think I really believe in reincarnation (we're not suppose to anyway), but if there is such a thing, then I must have had some past life maybe working in connection to the shipping on the Great Lakes or married to a man who did?! 😁 I took a picture of his painting years ago and it's somewhere in my phone, but if you'd ever like me to send you this picture, I'd be happy to go take another picture and send to you. I work on the 1st floor of the same building where his painting is hung. BTW, do you know John Gurda? He is a Milwaukee Historian and worked at NML for a handful of years maybe 10-15 years ago. We actually have an NML Museum now located in our new Tower completed in 2017. John knows EVERYTHING Milwaukee related, NML related, and I have no doubt could tell and show you many things regarding Mr. Fitzgerald! 😊
Thank Mary Lynn...glad to hear from you again. Congrats on your 35 years at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. And yes, I would love it if you would send me a photo of Mr. Fitzgerald that hangs on the 8th floor. I do not know John Gurda...but I'd love to meet him and pick his brain. @@HistoryMysteryMan We have been working on finding out which division he was in. I have heard that Dennis P Hale had seen a guy on the stern as she was breaking and was washed away and he seemed as if he had no idea what was happening. Have you ever heard that? I think Hale had said it on an interview I seen. So I wonder how many guys were back in the stern when she broke and I wonder if any were alive the whole time she drove on her own. One of the lines from Lightfoot’s song of the Fitzgerald “ it’s been good to know ya” I’ve heard that a person on the Morrell had said that. I think his name was Norm Bragg who had also survived the Henry Steinbrenner sinking too. So if that’s where Lightfoot got it from it does include the Morrell.

I have a question. When I see pictures of the Bradley and the Anderson it looks like they have some kind of big crane on their deck where the hatch eays are. I don't know, but why did the fitzgerald not have one?
