The scumbags also know, Lauren. That the average holidaymaker will gone in a week or two and be left with a negative view of their trip . Friend of mine had his wallet lifted with money, cards the lot .on the Metro , ( Costa del sol ) . He was sat down and never felt a thing . Stone cold sober as well .

The police know who’s doing this. I have seen the same two girls of Moroccan appearance between Los Cris and PDLA many times over a long period of time picking pockets expertly and when I warned a potential victim the got very close to, one of them gave me the middle finger salute. They have no fear of getting caught as the police simply lift them then drop them off around the corner. Southern Tenerife has been destroyed by them. As a very frequent visitor once, I have no plan on returning.☹️

That's anywhere in Spain, especially if know that tourists frequent anywhere, I was pickpocketed three times during the time I lived in Spain. Once just waiting for a cab with my kids, once in a busy department store, probably on the escalator, and once in a good restaurant tavern, just leaving my purse hung on the side of the chair, but seriously target tourist places. Also be careful with backpacks. Make sure that don't have easy access. My backpack purses have inner leather ties, under the flaps. I tighten and tie a knot, that can't easily be undone. If only zippers, they get in and out quickly, even if waist packs if a crowded place, and see that distracted. First time I went to Spain as a teenager, my grandmother made me a cloth compartments type of under my bra wear, that tied with long wrap around flat cloth ribbons, and that's where I carried American Express traveler's checks used back then. Any important amounts of money. It was undetectable for thieves. All cotton so it didn't make me sweat. As soon as I arrived my family kept it safe, and gave me whatever I needed of it all, going to their bank with them to get them cashed.

One of the lads was having a argument with who he though robbed him & while she was stood with us professing her innocence she tapped down my pockets.

We were in Tenerife in February and met up with some friends. Someone attempted to pick pocket them around the Oasis Centre on the Golden Mile. Fortunately they noticed and confronted the pickpocket who covered their face and ran away. My friend now puts a safety pin through the zip and then into the material of her bag. This stops someone trying to unzip a bag.

I’m currently in La Palma now. Was in La gomera last week.
Arrived in Tenerife on the 22nd April and within about 30 minutes my bag had been stolen. Passport, money, camera equipment, vape, ID, bank cards, glasses, contact lenses. All my important things. Rather than getting ready to go to La gomera the next day, I spent it at the police station, contacting my insurance, crying, calling my parents, replacing all my belongings. I’m travelling the islands alone as a young woman and I’ve never felt so violated knowing I was targeted and all my things are probably discarded along a roadside somewhere.
Absolute sour start to my travels.

The last time I was warned about pickpockets was on holiday with my ex and four friends in Gran Canaria. As a result we hired out the safe in the apartment and locked away spare cards, cash, passports and valuables... we went out about 10:30pm and returned at around 02:30. The apartment door had been opened and secured with a key, the safe removed and cards from the safe used at 11:10pm. What was odd was the apartment complex wanted the safe key back and were straight into the room minutes after we checked out to replace the safe - something our rep said was odd but insurance covered it. I wouldn't use the safe again, it's going in my front pocket. At least that way I'll have a thrill when they try and grab my personal items! 😂

  • @Monica-mg1et

Excellent advice Andrew. These people are so clever when it comes to distracting people. A friend of ours had his genuine Rolex watch taken off his wrist in a bar in Las Americas at Christmas. Had to get a crime number for his insurance & couldn’t get through to the Police phone number. Rang out continuously. Eventually a neighbour of his who is a translator brought him to the police station. She told him they purposely don’t answer the phone as they don’t want the crimes adding to their numbers. A lot of people get fed up trying to get through & forget about it & put it down to experience. My dad had his wallet taken last year & the distraction tactic was 1 person helping a driver to reverse out of a parking spot & stopped them walking past. Driver was crunching gears etc & delaying while the other guy took dads wallet. Stay safe & vigilant everyone. xx

It is good that you continue the warnings. Obviously it's needed. Personally I have never in my 24 years as a tourist in Tenerife experienced robbery or car theft, but I always pay for a safe deposit box in the apartments, and always leave cards, passport and cash in there. Just taking with me the amount needed for the day/evening. When we hire a car, we never keep anything in the car, and alway make shopping as our last stop before going back to the hotel. When we go out we never uses hand bags or backpacks. Just a very small wallet where the hotel key card and some cash fits in, phone in our front pocket or in our hands . When going to the beach or pool, we only take sunscreen, towel and 20 euros for snacks with us together with water. Never phones, wallets or other stuff. Never put your mobile phone or wallet accessible in your back pocket. Always in your hand or front pocket, so you have control of it. that is my advice. I actually didn't know it was such a big problem until you started telling us all in your videos. Good job there Andrew 👍Makes us even more aware now 🙂

Thanks for this Andrew, very interesting indeed. Over the years of being on holiday in Bulgartia, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Tunisia, Turkey and others, I have a system. I NEVER take important documents, wallet, bank cards etc etc out with me on a day out. Only cash which is deposited in different pockets, bum bag and even (if in trainers)down each sock. This means that if I am robbed there is very little lost. I am glad to say that so far I have been lucky and never been robbed. I am 61 and also not the fittest any longer, so it is important to be aware of my surroundings and people although still relaxed and enjoying myself. I do believe that a lot of people who are robbed come from very safe places and are caught out by this alone. My lady friend who grew up and lived in a small German village for most of her life was completely naive about these kinds of things too. I have lived in many different places, countries and cities but this dose make me less of a target simply because I am old and grey. Thanks again Andrew, much appreciated.

I have to be honest I visited Lanzarote a few years ago and it was the only holiday I had where the rep's warned us several time's to be aware of pick pockets. This type of thing happens everywhere but on holiday it definitely pays to be that extra carful.

Great update as always. It's rife on the Spanish mainland as well, but I don't feel it is publicised enough.
I'm just coming to the end of a three city hop in Barcelona, Valencia & Madrid (got a big Knightstrider video catch up coming up when I go back to the UK on Monday) and the authorities don't seem to warn any tourists about pick pocketing, they are no signs or any forms of warning.
You are very correct in what you say that it is easy to slip into holiday mode or feel this won't happen to you.
Barcelona, down La Ramblas, Valencia during Las Fallas and Madrid on Gran Via they are no signs warning of pickpockets are operating in the area.
Keep trying to spread the word through the channel though

No signs in barocelona but i was warned about pickpockets by local police officers there in la ramblas! Also my friend witnessed someone pickpocketing on the subway in barocelona! I never carried a rucksack type bag or a nice bag, surely only little cash in my pocket due to pickpockets there.

As a cop in tenerife you can be sure this is a real problem ,like in any mayor touristic place, this profesional thieves are gonna prey on tourist , much more has to be done by authorities to prevent this from happening . I have had to assist to to many tourists with their holidays ruined and poor impresions on the island.

Thanks for this absolutely thankful I myself was in my hotel room in Spain years back I assumed my daughter partner had forgotten something and had come back. Our bag was on the floor money items. I was in bed this person came in didn’t look that I was in the room he went for the bag noticed me ran off. Had I not been in the room our belongings money would have gone. An internal key card my guess. Corruption everywhere take a bum bag front facing. Great advice thank you.

Thank you Andrew for highlighting this about pick pocket, we go too Tenerife for 5 weeks twice a year, my wife put her purse on a chain and attache it too her handle of her bag, and she puts it in a zip compartment inside the bag, we were walking in the town in Los Crisand my wife felt a tug on her bag, somebody tryed to steal her purse, but failed, because she had it chained to her handle of her bag, another great vlog Andrew 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Well done Andrew. It so important that people are made aware of these issues. So many scams now with these targeted robberies. Apart from the crooks who do this and they are everywhere, peoples guard when in holiday is often down and relaxed atmospheres lead into this sort of thing.
I was in Barcelona the other day and the same sort of thing happened and as you probably know Barcelona is rife with Robbery. The Police here in Spain could do more, but I think it does depend on region and what the local policía are will to tackle???

Thank you for highlighting this. Happened to me in Adeje in January this year. I am always cautious but they were very clever. Happened to another person in our party too. We got left with no money and no cards. Police really didn't want to know. Police station was packed with people who had also been pickpocket. Visiting again next month. I've purchased a lock for my bag and will have eyes in the back of my head

We noticed this sort of thing happen in the North when we were on a cruise. A young girl walked slowly in front of an old couple, two men walked closely behind and rifled through the ladies rucksack and pinched her purse. The weird part was, it was right outside the police station! They were gone done the backstreet before you could do anything!
