Well done Andrew for highlighting this , I personally haven't purchased any electrical/ electronic items on the island since first coming over 20 years ago , as you say if it sounds too good to be true , it normally is a scam or a dud piece of kit . I also only tend to use a card purchase with restaurants / bars etc that I know , otherwise I use cash , can't be too careful unfortunately. But great information as usual Andrew 👍🏻👍🏻

Last autumn a guy came out of a souvenir shop on the prom in Costa Adeje and tried to sell me a tablet for 30 Euros. I listened to what he had to say and knew it was a con and left. Whenever I passed that shop afterwards he kept saying he knew I'd be back as it was such I good deal. Eventually I decided to lie to him, saying that I worked in an electronics store back home, and that one of the perks was the latest gear at rock bottom prices, so wasn't interested. If they can lie to me then I can lie to them.

It is so sad that these things happen. It is not first time in Tenerife that this has happened with electronic goods.
A few years ago some of the stores did this sort of thing before, the use of credit cards is one of the oldest scams with their cloning copies. Very cleaver, but so glad you have highlighted it, we get it in mainland Spain also. Sad people who are ripping off people when they are in holiday, guard down etc. makes many people vulnerable to this.
Hopefully quite a few people will see this and not fall for it.
As they say there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Thank you for this post Andrew! This happened to us in Costa Adeje, shopping mall, clothes shop Asian people! Cut a long story short they took £2800 from our credit card. Nat West Bank wouldn't help us because they said we had entered the pin. I fought the case and went to the Finacial Ombudsman. Eventually he got our money back! It took 9 months! I have said before that the tour operators should be warning their clients that this could happen. I complained to Jet2, but they didn't want to know. The reps should at least make an announcement on the bus or something, anything, to warn people!

Finally someone properly exposed those scammers! Thank you for that post and I wish this will encourage more people to keep exposing scammers and eventually reduce them or at least prevent them to scale up.
I was thinking about providing similar content regarding tourist trap restaurants, particularly Agua y Sal in Tajao where they intentionally charge for significantly higher weight not even presenting actual weight when you order - based on reviews it is a general practice and I know for a fact that they are manipulating Google maps (they had duplicated entries, one with fake reviews and the other one for angry customers - Google took one down following my report), they trick SEO on their website ("the best fish restaurant on Tenerife"), etc.

We went to the police in Tenerife who were aware of the scams and were trying to catch them. Luckily they got all the money back it was in the san euginio shopping centre the man was giving them a lift back to the hotel and picking them up to show them how to use them every time they went back they charged them more without them knowing . When I first came to Tenerife about 40 years ago, the electronic stores, camera stores etc., they were run by local people who would be really helpful, and you would come away with a real bargain.
10 years later, these shops were run by people, and I am sorry to say this, but it has to be said 'of Asian extraction', and you never got what you thought you were buying but an inferior product at an increased price.
Sadly, it seems that the trend has continued, and now some of these places are run by outright scammers.

Managed to steal a bag containing a contactless card which was used and a mobile which has been tracked to Los Cristianos now we’ve arrived home. Attempted to report it to the police to be told numerous times that they don’t speak English and were unable to help unless we called a number which was disconnected. Totally shocking and ruined the holiday, place doesn’t seem as safe as it has been previously.

I was in Fuertaveventura some years ago, before the euro. We were warned about scammers addind a zero to your bill. Besides that, I had my my £1800.00 video camera with me. I saw in one of the electronic shops, the very same camera for £250.00. Intrigued, I asked the guy about it. He let me handle it. It was absolutely awful... Hardly any of the functions worked the screen was like a Picasso painting. When I pointed this out to the guy, he turned nasty and almost threw me out his shop. What I did notice was that ALL this type of shop were run by Asians. Lesson to everyone... DON'T BUY FROM THESE CROOKS. Don't even enquire. There are NO bargains in these shops.

This year I got caught by 3 lots, enjoyed making them sweat. Needless to say I did not fall for it. They say they are employed by Samsung. They lured me in by giving you discount at the market then they start talking about tablets.

My dad was offered a tablet and salesman was pushy
Unfortunately he used his card to buy other stuff in that shop
So he came out explainined it too me we both agreed it sounded fishy
So I could him to transfer his money into my account until he was home
That way we could peace of mind and enjoy our holiday otherwise we would of spent it worrying
In future might be best to use pre loaded currency cards for holiday use
