My grandmother used to fry up okra - but not my mother. Miss them both. You take me back to my childhood. I don't think you realize the hole you fill in so many of our hearts. Thank you.
Yes ,i miss my childhood and parents so much..i was really close to my mom,she passed,i was 53,like to have killed me,in my 70s and i still miss her,Tipper brings so much to us in many ways..love this lady and her family
That song lyric “you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone” says it all.
Agree Tipper is such a Godsent plus the whole family
“Okrey”….😉
Miss. Beth, I feel your pain and grief.
I tell people the loss of a loved~one does NOT get easier with time. It just becomes our “new normal”.
Take the time you have with your loved~ones, to make lots of beautiful memories!!
I hope that nobody minds my Jewish background, and that I am by no means Appalachian either, but this page is so fascinating! You and your followers do have something in common that I find so interesting! Some of these foods actually have something in common with the kosher recipes that I am so used to! Enjoy a great week ahead everyone!
We are all family here.
So glad you enjoy our videos 😀 Love the connections 😀
Shalom! :)
I am not from Appalachia either, but I feel like everyone is welcome here.
Me either. Love you all
Hey Tipper.Very Nice Day isn't it! From your homeless homeowner!
Nothing like fresh produce from your garden. Thinking of you all alot.
A handful of raisins is very nice with carrot salad.
Carrots pineapple and raisins really good with a home made dressing
And walnuts or pecans!
Greetings from North Texas! What I wouldn't give for my Mamaw's fried okra one more time! Thanks to you both for spreading the love!
North Texas here as well.
Me too!
I love fried okra ❤️
Nothing better than fried okra! Native Texan now married and living in WV😢. The growing season here is way shorter than where I was born and raised in TX. It also doesn't seem to get hot enough for okra to do well. SO, I drive to TN, buy okra and South Carolina peaches and bring them back here to cook and freeze. Nobody here grows patty pan squash or purple hull peas here except me. I'm so homesick for the food I grew up eating. 😢
@@lisab1419 my cousin grows purple hull peas in north Georgia, I didn't get any though, God bless you 🌞
Of all the things I grew up eating , beans and cornbread remain my favorite. Soup beans in the winter, half runners and greasy beans in the summer. This Ky girl has gotten her Chicago born husband to love it too!
My nana made fried okra all the time, as well as fried potatoes, green tomatoes and so many other wonderful dishes that defined my childhood. I love your channel it really warms my heart it helps me to remember the food customs I grew up with. Hope you all are well❤.
Thank you 😀
A popular school lunch salad/side was "Waldorf Salad", which was shredded carrots, finely diced celery, chopped apples, and raisins in a dressing of mayonnaise, sugar, and a splash of vinegar. Salt and pepper to taste. I loved it!
My mom put walnuts in our Waldorf Salad too.
@@sandybarth1. My mother did that also. I like toasted pecans, also.
Love "Waldorf Salad", with Walnuts.....going to have to make this soon as dental work heals.
Replace that salad with a big plate of fresh sliced maters, cucumbers and maybe some quartered sweet onions and it'd be just like home.
Also, discovered what I've been missing since I grew up and moved off: a pea patch! I'm covered up in purple hulls and they're the best peas I've eaten in decades! I've tried canned peas, shelled from roadside stands, shelled my own from the Sprouts. Nothing beats fresh from the back garden.
By a mile!!!
My parents were both from southern Kentucky and I have had that same meal many, many times. Actually, I had made a big 'messa' beans earlier in the week and was enjoying the leftovers (with fresh corn, new potatoes and fried cabbage) when I caught this episode!
Our Southern culture is so blessed to have these things to eat. What a delicious feast to sit down too. Tipper you are an excellent cook & your family knows it. I never take this goodness for granted. Another great video.......🌿🌺🌿🌺🌿
Thank you!
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL..AS A OLD MOUNTAIN RAISED MAN..THEY ARE THE REAL THING..GOD BLESS YOU ALL
Bless you!
That supper looks delicious. It's even better when most of it comes from your own garden. You make what many would call humble, country meals, but I think they're the best meals and they remind me of family times with grandparents and great grandparents. Thank you for your wonderful channel. It is so nice to see good wholesome Christian folks just enjoying their life and each other. God bless you all and prayers for Granny.
I can say, there is no CZcams cooking and gardening channel but yours! It’s the best. I truly love the use of sound in your videos, it makes me feel like I’m right there with you live!
Blessings,
Allison 🌼
Thank you so much 😊
Well, dearies, I finally tried making cornbread Tipper's way. Up here in New Hampshire, one has to special order White Lily products, and I did it! I followed your instructions, Tipper, from the video "The Secret to Good Cornbread". What a DELICIOUS departure from the recipe/method I've always used (Northern style: baked in a buttered, non-preheated 8x8 pan, with sugar in the batter. I know, I know - sugar in the batter is absolutely NOT the thing in your neck of the woods! 😄). But, as they say, variety is the spice of life, and one should always try new ways to prepare food. An epiphany, this lovely, crispy, roasty-toasty cornbread! I brought half of it to my neighbor, who is a recent transplant from Arkansas. I figure he'll be able to tell me if I landed it or not. I've got a ham bone in the freezer, and some dried beans in the pantry. Guess what I'm gonna try next, when the weather cools a bit more! And, I'm making the Carrot Salad for tomorrow's supper. Thank you for including us in the celebration, friends. I think of Granny often, wishing her many good days. Peace be with you. 💚
Wonderful 😀
What a FEAST!!! Holy cow!! :) mmmm But then, I could make a meal out of the cornbread alone! Cornbread and milk! :) Thanks for sharing this amazing yummy meal!
That was a great looking supper! Just to let you know for the first time I made your cabbage patch stew , Granny's Holy Smoke cake, and of course corn bread for supper .You know I had my sister over just for the feast. I even had enough to share with my elderly neighbor. Thank you for the ideas and recipes.
Wonderful 😀
I've made the Cabbage Patch Stew, too. It's really good, isn't it? Very satisfying, especially with cornbread! 🙂
Now that is a perfect example of a Southern Appalachian meal. Makes me hungry! - Tennessee Smoky
I've never seen purple okra before
You post your videos right when I am about to go to sleep and they are such great calming effect!
Buggs Bunny used to sing, 🎵"Oh, carrots are divine, you get a dozen for a dime, it's maaaagic!"🎶 Of course, they cost a lot more than a dime a dozen now, so growing them yourself is a good way to go! God bless!
😀
Thank you for brining me back to Owsley county Kentucky. I can smell the cornbread, fried chicken, and green beans cooking in my grandma's kitchen.
My Grandma would love this salad. She always made the best slaw. You were really blessed with a huge, amazing garden! Thanks for sharing your bounty with all of us.
I actually get to catch your video not too long after it came out.🙂. Only because it raining today! Praise the Lord, because we’re surrounded by fires down in the lowlands. Taking advantage of the cool weather to watch you cook while I cook, lol. I’ve got a big ole pot of chili cooking on the stove and a bowl of bread dough raising to bake into loaves. That carrot salad looks yummy! TeresaSue.
Yay for rain!!
I made lasagna today. Not traditional, but with fresh zucchini, tomatoes, basil, and our own chevre cheese from our goats. Noodles, ground turkey sausage and some good tomatoe basil mozzarella from the store. I batch cook. So I froze 3 big pieces for later. Enjoy your channel!
Sounds yummy 😀 Thank you!
I don't know why...but watching you pick God's bounty makes my heart happy...and my God but your supper is makin' me drool!!!
This is the kind of meal I still love to eat. Fresh from the garden is oh so good. Like Matt, I love what I call Streak O Lean. Package says salt pork. Thanks for keeping our Southern roots alive. It's comforting to know you are passing along such a rich legacy.❤
Grew up in southern WV. My Great Granny would always make huge homemade biscuits, pinto beans with ham, fried potatoes, and greens for a meal. I miss that! She always had a garden and I remember sitting out there eating rhubarb and green onions straight out of the ground. She was such a fantastic cook! ❤❤
Like you, my grandmother was a great cook. She grew up in West Virginia. Her summer fresh meals made for great memories. I miss her very much.
Good lord , Yall putting paula deen in the dirt.
You know yall pretty much gotcha own TV show that blows anything we ever got to see on regular TV out the water.
Top notch quality real content.
Thank yall for giving it a go. Its greatly appreciated
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
That's my kind of supper there. Everything looks so delicious. Y'all have a blessed night. 😋
The doctor said my triglycerides and cholesterol are dangerously high, pray for me please!!! God help me!!!

God bless you friends of Appalachia 🙏✝️♥️
A lot of times my supper was a mater sammich. I was rich
We have very similar this evening for our supper. For folks looking to find non-sweet corn (aka Field Corn) for fried corn, I finally found a source! The brand PictSweet has Shoepeg Corn frozen. This cooked up with salt/pepper and bacon grease, and then pureed reminds me of my childhood of eating fried corn. It's hard to find now because the farmers are being subsidized to grow the ethanol corn types (sweet) and not cow feed corn (aka field corn.)
Fried field corn….. my dream of my childhood.
we ate field corn all the time when I was young. We would just put sugar in the pot of water when we cooked the corn.
@@sydneybeanpug really?? Our whole goal was for it to NOT be sweet. :)
If the package just says corn its field corn. The sweet corn says it right on the label. If a bag just says sugar, its beet sugar. Cane sugar, like dominoes, comes from sugar cane, and says it on the label.
@user-yz9yg4yx1k thanks. My trouble has always been when I buy "creamed corn" it doesn't say its sweet, but it is super sweet! Always. This shoepeg corn is the first I've found that didn't have sweetener. I don't want sweet.
I was born and raised in Western NC. Near the border of Tennessee and Georgia. I now live in North Fort Worth and love your channel!
When I'm feeling a bit home sick, I'll watch your videos and they keep me close to home and grounds me in my Appalachian roots!
Thank you 😀
I planted okra 3 times & only got 4 plants…. Yours is beautiful!
I am going to be sure to make a Celebrating Appalachia supper soon! Your meals always look SO GOOD!🤤
The carrot salad looks yummy! I love vegetable dinners. Thanks for sharing.❤
Im a pa Appalachian and thst looks like lunch , or dinner as we called noon meal . Supper at 5 . Dinner was ofter left over vegetables. Age 94 , age 87 , age 92 . My greats when they passed . No processed foods . Home cooked seasonal food . Wild game . , fish . Pa life !!
I am visiting western NC in October. How I would love to come to your home and eat one of your delicious meals with all of that fresh garden produce. Yum! 😋
Me too!
My kids love carrot salad, i put grated carrots, well draiined pineapple tidbits and raisins. Then i make a dressing , yummy
I adore green beans this way. What an absolutely lovely meal!❤
👋♥️👋Yummmm! That meal looked like manna from Heaven. Wish I could have been there with y’all to enjoy it too. Miss Tipper I think you are such a wonderful person and to teach others to enjoy your lifestyle and talents in the garden and kitchen is truly commendable. Thanks for being there and know you are loved by an old woman and her husband and daughter down here in Mississippi. We try every day to catch your videos. Regards and prayers to you and your precious family. Continued success to y’all. 👋♥️👋
My southern belly is hungry now after watching this video. It is so awesome that you are documenting both this and the Appalachian Vocabulary tests! Love your channel!!!
Oh boy, I love okra and cornbread and beans❤
Have you ever heard of the Appalachian storyteller? All his stories are true! They're very interesting, amazing folks!! Continued blessings!!!
Love his channel 😀
My mom used to make a very similar salad and added raisins…it was so good!😊
Yes I remember one like that, raisins!!!!
I dearly love watching Matt dish up whatever meal you've prepared. I especially like the closeup...I can just about taste it all. You cook the very foods I grew up with in Wilkes County. Tonight's supper for me will be chicken thighs, a leftover sweet potato, slaw, sliced tomatoes and cornbread. It's not even lunchtime yet and I'm already hungry for supper! I declare I think you're the best cook I've ever seen. Diane in NC
You are so kind-thank you 😀
I’m surprised that you don’t call the bean juice pot likker. Pink eye purple hull peas make really good pot likker. Your salad reminded me of my mother’s carrot and raisin salad.
Supper looks amazing! I absolutely love your apron!
My mom always cut that hot wedge of cornbread right out of the oven! My sisters and I do the same thing and it’s always a “Mom” memory. ❤
Mmmmm!! I'm starvin' for that meal! My husband is eating only carnivore for the last couple months, so I never get to cook up nice meals like this anymore. He's healed a lot of sickness from his body, though, so I can't complain. He's dropped 20+ pounds so he now weighs a healthy 175lbs, got rid of inflammation outta his joints, has amazing energy, and feels like he's 20 again, though he just celebrated his 55th birthday two days ago. I am "eating with my eyes" through your video, today!
So glad it is working for him 😀
I Love fresh veggies from the garden it’s a peace of mind where it came from. Love your videos you all are Precious to the LORD. You bring me back to my Daddy life growing up in NC and Virginia
As a Southerner this made my mouth water! My mamaw used to have a garden back in the day and you're not kidding when you say how wonderful fresh veggies are...
Just like my Mama, I think I’m in love.
Thanks for the post food looks 😋😋😊
I like Matt making his plate.
Carrot Salad
* 1 cup Carrots, grated
* 1 Apple, unpeeled, cored and diced
* 1 cup chopped Celery
* 1 Green or Red Bell Pepper, seeded and chopped
* Mayonnaise, to taste
* Salt and Pepper, to taste
* Fresh Basil or Cilantro, optional
Place everything in a bowl and mix well. If you wish to add additional seasonings, do so to your taste preference. The herbs are not part of the original recipe, but may be added if you’d prefer an herbed carrot salad. Once everything is mixed thoroughly, allow the salad to remain in the refrigerator for a few hours (no time recommendations were provided in the above video) for the flavors to meld.
We have an Apple Festival here in our town each year and there is a recipe competition with different divisions, years ago I helped my daughter make and enter carrot & apple salad in the children’s division and I’m pretty sure she won a ribbon for it. 😊 wonderful memory and wonderful salad ❤
This salad you made looks delicious. It reminds me of one my Granny used to make the only difference is she put walnuts in hers. She was from Appphasia too. ☺
O boy that was a great story tipper I loved it I can see everyone in that little bedroom. So much how a lottle gal can bring so much happiness to so many and i say gid bless them all ..one of my favorite s in herd thank you Tipper 8t made my day 😊
I appreciate the beautiful way you encourage us to see things through your eyes. So refreshing!
Beautiful ✌🏼😊👍🏻
We never get enough of watching you prepare meals and listen to your day!❤️🇨🇦🙏
Wow, thank you 😀
Apple and celery go so well together
We love cilantro.
Salad sounds good.
Oh my goodness … I could smell those green beans thru my cell phone when you put them on the plate!!! Your supper looks delicious beyond delicious
You are so beautiful very positive chill and laid back and down to earth please stay strong keep safe stay focused keep your faith keep your head up keep your mind clear ❤😊
wow! lookat those carrots
YUM!!!! All that food looks so good Tipper and Matt!!!
This is the exact kind of food I was raised on. Love this.
Feels like we're related.
For sure.
I just made a comment a few minutes ago, but I need to say something else. How fun it was to watch the kitchen cleanup. That's all part of making meals, but I have to say I just get it done so I don't have to face a sink full of dirty dishes later. Diane in NC
Love eating out of the garden hated working in it when I was growing up but would give anything to be able to do that all over again now the best years are remembering my Mom, Dad and siblings God bless you and your family.
What a feast!
Your carrot salad and entire supper looks very tasty. Nothing like a pot of beans....comfort food!
Not just the supper looks gorgeous but also your garden. I see the hard work there I'd be really proud of it if it was mine :)
I absolutely love carrot salad!
When you cut your sample of cornbread to butter, I noticed the bowl of large scuppanong grapes. They would make a tasty snack after supper.
Great video. I appreciate all the hard work, effort, and talent you share with so many.
I never imagined that would be how okra grows.
My mom used to make us carrot salad with just some mayonnaise and raisins. Still love it but do want to try your recipe.
That is a plate of Heaven!!! ❤️
When Matt was getting his helping of those beautiful beans it reminded me of something my husband’s Grandpa would say. He would pile his plate high with green beans and then say “that’s just a taste!”
😀 Love that!
Hot cornbread with butter - yes ma’am!
The crunch of the salad is music to my ears and I can almost taste it! And I don't rinse my salt pork either! Wonderful meal. ❤
My dad always cut the leaf with the pod of okra. He said he wanted all the nutrients in the soil going to the okra, not wasted on leaves. Made sense, but I never saw tall stalks with just the top leaves in anyone else’s garden. So I was actually embarrassed by those ugly stalks!
Wow, I have never seen red okra. That’s beautiful.
Oh, carrot salad! Now I haven't seen anyone mention that in years. As a little girl, we just had carrots, raisins, apples, and mayo in ours. I'll give this one a try. Looks a lot healthier. We also love our beans. They're cheap and hearty.
Your home is so comforting!😊 we grew up eating a lot of beans also, all types, sometimes mixed in macaroni, which is an Appalachian food. Also, a lot of rubbles in our beans and soups too. There were 10 children, so we were grateful for what we got, lol
It all looks so good! Save me a piece of cornbread. I want lots of butter on my piece.
Where I am from in Alabama we made our carrot salad differently. You might have seen it made like this too. We use carrots, raisins, crushed pineapple, a little bit of sugar and mayonnaise. We were always tickled when mother made it because we thought we had dessert.
My absolute favorite meal!, green beans, new potatoes, tomatoes, corn bread and any/all of those side dishes. It just doesn’t get any better than that! Thanks for a great video😋 15:26
I really need to come spend a spring and summer with you so I can learn how to plant, grow, harvest, can, freeze and cook! 😅
That red okra is beautiful! I've never seen that. That supper looks soo good!
Supper tonight was meatloaf, butter beans, Mexican cornbread, mashed potatoes, and lettuce slaw. Southern eating is the best! I say smells are starving me to death also. Lol
😀 Sounds great!!
So, so glad to see you both doing well. I have memories of going to my grandparents house to pick vegetables from their garden. Now, I will tell you that I absolutely HATED picking okra because it would sting me to no end. My grandmother would offer me old hosiery to keep it from being so bad but I was terrified of my friends seeing me wearing them. Well, my dad told me that I had about two seconds to get myself into gear or he would make the decision for me...... not good. The okra, butterbeans, peas, and corn got picked without further drama and I was ready to dive into the feast. Thank you again for taking me back to times of pure gold.
Wow, so beautiful. You are so blessed.
Some of those carrots look gnarly!
In Texas, my grand mother used to make something just like your carrot salad, we called it carrot slaw, ours had pear in place of the apple, I think thats only because we had several pear trees and no apple trees. Im glad this video showed up near supper time, if it was the middle of the day I would be hungry way too long.
Tipper that okra freezes so much better if you freeze it whole. When you get ready to use it, just run some warm water over it until you can break it apart. Then slice it and roll in cornmeal and fry it. Tastes like fresh okra even after being in the freezer.
