Meanwhile, critics like Aaron Cubic, City Manager of Grants Pass, argue that current legal frameworks hinder effective assistance to the homeless population.
The rally wasn't just a protest; it was a call to action. Advocates from as far as Hawaii participated, with some even sleeping outside the court to secure seats for the hearing. Figures like India Pungarcher and Chaplain Lindsey Krinks from Open Table Nashville argued against the wasteful spending on criminalization, advocating for funds to be redirected towards housing and support services.
Diane Yentel, president of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, criticized the punitive approach of imposing heavy fines on the homeless, pointing out the vicious cycle of penalties that exacerbate the issue rather than solving it.
This moment underscores a national reflection on the values that underpin our approach to homelessness and housing. As legislative bodies continue to push anti-homeless laws, the need for informed advocacy and compassionate policy-making has never been more critical. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.

They already separate families. Men’s shelters are separate from women’s shelters. Juvenile shelters are also separate. When a whole family enters the “shelter system” sometimes they aren’t allowed to see each other for months.

my disability pays $950. a month. Rent is $1200 and up. Why does the government not pay enough to be housed yet make homelessness a crime?

When I started renting in 2018, my rent for a 1-br apartment was $850/month. Now, that same room is over $1,500/month. Thats not all inflation, it’s greed! 😡

The government is run by the RICH! I knew a lady that owned 40 houses! She made a fortune in collecting rent! I also know of a man that made a fortune buying up quit claim deeds from people who lost their homes due to losing their jobs. The low paid people don't stand a chance - especially when their jobs are sent overseas or given to illegal aliens! Not everyone can get an education or inheritance!😢 Many people that do get an inheritance often get super lazy and judgemental of other people! Some even believe that GOD has given them special blessings and insights , so they can condemn the less fortunate for their stupidity!
Yep, and they've spent enough to just build enough government housing for them. Government housing is the solution. An ugly, cheap building full of studio apartments. Build it in a modular way, so the interiors of the rooms could be easily replaced if damaged. Even charge something like 300 a month, so that anyone even working part time can afford it. That's literally the only viable solution. Private companies will simply never build anything like that
because the full time was meant for students not to sustain adults. The adults never tried to learn a trade or go to school. They accepted min wage jobs. It is not easy to survive and requires constant education and time spent on bettering yourself, which these people refuse to do. In other words, you get what you put in. No free rides.

Thank you to those protesting this. I was homeless in Grants Pass after I was layed off and it was awful enough before they enacted this stuff. A city councilman who didn't know I was homeless made a comment to me about how he was angry a group was giving the homeless sleeping bags that winter. He said if they could just take the sleeping bags away during the worst of the winter the issue would solve itself. Was shocked hearing someone basically wishing for my death to my face without knowing a thing about me. It was before the current restrictions but even then I'd been told it wasn't allowed to fall asleep outside of private property. I had my car but getting interrupted anytime you fall asleep and having to move really kind of breaks you.

I think the wait-list usually, in most places, is 4 years long.

In California when I become disabled, I calculated that at the rate section 8 housing was given out I would be 120 years old before I would get a decent place to live! Yet other people get it without the slightest sign of disability! Are they professional lyers or what ??

When society decides to put the human being first above financial profit and gain, then and only then issues of homelessness and poverty will be a way of the past. The US annual budget is $6.4 trillion dollars and still examples of this lack of priority exists when you send off military to war, then they are brought back home to become homeless. Then arrest and / or fine them to boot for being homeless. Absolute madness. It's crazy, but it happens.
It happens becuse we let it happen. Politicians have zero consequences for any of this. The WORST that will happen to them is they'll lose the election, and immediately be placed in a 6 figure job. They have nothing to fear from us. Human operate on motivation, if they have no fear from consequences, what's their motivation to change course?

Watching from Australia, this is great news, please keep up the show of unity for the homeless. Here in Australia it is also becomming very serious and now on the news. Pure greed has caused this, Australian house prices are off the planet and it is greed gone mad, costs to build, etc, profit making, greedy Agents etc. Our children will never get a home here unless they get help. They don’t want charity. They want an affordable alternative that they can to live. Not like squatters, they want to pay their rent. Some just want to sleep one night under a warm roof. They don’t want cement for a bed. They don’t want to drag all of their belongings everywhere so they don’t get stolen from them. They would like to make a decent meal and take a shower with soap. John Stuart Mill had a better solution with his version of classic liberalism. Everyone is entitled to the maximum liberty until such time as they inconvenience or annoy others. Still not perfect but what is?
This gets me to the heart! I haven't felt so strongly about an issue since the late 60s. For years I was a single mother and nearly homeless twice. It can happen to anyone at any time. We need to take care of our unhoused people, those who are disabled, those with mental health issues, seniors and others. I hope the Supreme Court wakes up to this critical human rights issue!
Please keep covering this story. Mainstream media won't cover it thoroughly but when they do, they don't mention the root causes of homelessness, only the visible, public outcome of living on the streets. You should also cover Proposition 1 in California and the connection with homelessness and what exactly politicians there think they are doing to solve it with the new law.
Why isn’t anyone talking about all the landlords who raised rents to the point that people who work 40+ hours a week can’t afford it😡 It started during the pandemic and has since gotten worse and worse 😡Example: 2018 my studio apartment was $675 month bills paid. Same apartment in2020 $1000 month plus unmetered utilities 😡There’s no justification for this, other than greed!😡

I was homeless for 35 years, and wandered across 46 states during that time. I AM the voice for the homeless!
The very people who have created the homelessness crisis are the ones complaining the loudest about the homeless. Our politicians are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of EVERY citizen, not just the wealthiest citizens. The lack of progress in providing actually-affordable housing shows the lack of political motivation to enforce existing laws that should be preventing the loss of affordable housing and these laws should also be providing for enough affordable housing to accommodate the growing need, but those laws are intentionally not being enforced. Instead, politicians are subservient to wealthy developers, who demand public funding and less regulation, while they build luxury housing and housing that is only affordable for upper-middle income earning families. THIS IS THE ERA OF GREED, AND WEALTHY DEVELOPERS ARE IN CONTROL OF OUR POLITICIANS AND OUR LAWS.

All in the name of " cleaning up society" I know from first hand experience as they took all my tools and vehicles that I needed to make a living! When they fineunhoused people to get rid of them, they know they can't collect money from them, so they take anything else they can get! HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF ANYONE GOING TO JAIL FOR BEING BROKE OR HOMELESS?? Getting free room and board in jail at the taxpayers expense? I know of people who have deliberately committed low level crimes just to get a meal in jail and hopefully getting on a government program for reform!

Cleveland, TX a suburb of Houston, TX has over a year waiting list for low income housing. Most of the Houston area lease housing are overpriced and require your income to be three to four times the lease amount. Houston realtors discriminate and have 3 to 4 months back log on discrimination cases. Think twice before moving here!

Start by banning private equity groups from buying homes. This will bring housing costs down substantially.
No money for citizens housing while they pay for illegal immigrants to be housed, this is not right. How can there be money to house illegal immigrants but nothing to house citizens? There needs to be a class action lawsuit against the government for this discrimation against lawful citizens. I am disabled sleeping outdoors in my truck for over 10 years, I have no drug or alcohol problems. I've applied for subsidized housing and although I am on lists, I have not been helped with housing to date. I will not sleep another winter outdoors myself. I can get housing in Mexico, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Spain, Africa for a few hundred dollars but I will have to give up health care and it doesnt matter, because my health is being destroyed by living outdoors. Maybe that is what they want, for people to die so that they dont have to pay for social security.

Homelessness has always been a crime. The Courts have always discriminated against homeless under the Transient policy. You can't prove an address you are a Transient, apartments do count as a stationary residence. The word Transient replaced the word Homeless. Now people are finding out the Truth. Poverty has always been treated as a Crime it is a system designed for Profit.

I’m really shocked that this is happening in Grant’s Pass. I was homeless there in the 1990s and they had excellent services for me. There was even a really cool homeless-made newspaper. The community must have gotten overwhelmed as the homeless population grew.

TBH these people are right. The government has literally spent enough to just house these people twice over. There's no reason to call a hobo a criminal, especially on "public" land. How do they even expect people to get a job and save money if they don't have a place to eat, sleep and clean up? Most employers don't wanna hire homeless people. And even if they do, you gotta have somewhere to rest. How do you get a home if you don't have a job cuz you don't have a home cuz you can't get job?
Open your home if you care so much
1. Buy-up all the working class neighborhoods.
2. Increase rent prices from $350/month to $1700.
3. Complain about all the homeless people. And shortage of minimum wage workers.
Rinse and repeat.

Homeless people are made to feel invisible. I am happy for the speakers who used their voice to share their opinions/experiences.

We need a law no landlord can charge no more than one hundred dollars a month per bedroom no more. A law that no one can sell a house for no more than ten thousand dollars. No land can be sold less than a acre.

What about regulating rent, the cost is ridiculous. Remodel old vacant building into permeant , and temporary housing. Our city leaders need to be proactive and do the right thing, do there job. Man! this makes me mad!
I have compassion for any person in a homeless situation. As a community, we need to provide an adequate solution; however, housing is not a human right.
