- Ken is a homeless veteran in San Diego. He had bought a fishing boat and just started to make some money fishing. The boat also provided Ken with a place to live, so he ended up on the streets when he lost the boat.
Ken thought that he would be able to survive homelessness, thinking to himself it can't be that hard to work your way up. Ken quickly learned that it's "not easy to overcome all the obstacles to get a home again."
Ken says being a veteran, it's one more organization to turn to for help, but that doesn't mean people can get past the bureaucracy to get the support they need. At the time of this interview, Ken was approved for housing. Sometimes it can take months or more after getting approved to when you are in housing. I hope the rest of his path out of homelessness is easy.
In San Diego, homeless people are given three hours to move their stuff. If, by chance, the person is at a doctor's appointment or a job interview or out trying to find food and water, the city takes all their belongings.
Ken shares how, while he was filling out forms to get into a shelter, the city came and took all of his stuff, including his ID, DD214., social security card, and birth certificate, so without identification, Ken was not able to get into the shelter and remained on the street homeless. To make it worse, Ken's friends tried to save his tent from San Diego Sanitation throwing it away, but the police would not allow it.
Cities across America continue to invest more in pushing homeless people out of sight than helping to solve homelessness through evidence-based programs like housing. San Diego is one of the worst. We made this short documentary about how they criminalize homelessness.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Welcome to the volunteering club whiners.🙄😎😁⚡do it out of the kindness of your hearts "you to now! will get your reward in heaven." No pay.👍😎☕
Every American veteran should allow to stay at any military base as a guest for temporary housing. They deserve more than a "Thank you for their service ".
❤❤🇺🇸❤❤
I live in New York City and the mayor and governor puts the migrants first. And the veterans are being booted from the hotels and shelters. To make room for the migrants this is what's going on in our country the politicians are making huge amounts of money
Excellent idea!!
Yes!!!
they need to impose this very sad for veterans
Bases are for active military…unfortunately veterans are on their own when they discharge. I had to find out about all my services and benefits on my own when I life the military. No one told me much at all. Just did a ton of slide shows on returning to civilian life and that’s about it.
I’m happy to hear that he will soon have an apartment. Thank you for your service sir. I wish you the best.
Our country is not under attack,Service for what? They only serve for the military industrial complex.
Good news 🙂
Our Veterans deserve so much better. What a shame
He just said the VA provided a home that he will be moving into soon. 🤔
@@tmusa2002 Great news
You can blame the US navy for putting him on a boat . That can cause anyone being insane
This man should be getting a check from being in the service & even at his age he can get ss.🙏🏻✝️❤️
Do some research. Not every veteran gets “a check” from the govt. certain criteria must be met.
SS might not cover rent and food.
I'm living off of ss &:my whole family is military 🪖
@@curiouspenguin6887This has been the case for many years now. You'd need affordable housing, as in subsidized, to be able to rent, be it the SSI, or a check from the VA.
You are a very kind, well-spoken gentleman. I pray all goes well for you with housing and that you get your wish to be with your family again. Best wishes.
We are a cruel, sick, soulless, and lost society. Shame on us!
In some Countries things are better from a social point of view, but one thing that is the same worldwide is the negative changes happening, particularly for the fragile ones.
The taxpayers of California have 20 BILLION in taxes towards the homeless situation since Newsom has been in office ( 2019). This is not so much an issue of money as it is a problem about olicy, regulation, too much red tape, and leadership. Who you vote for matters.
Shame on our lying politicians!
This is how my friend got out of homelessness.
Step:1 lived in his car!
Step:2 found roommates "not perfect but its something"
Step:3 got work fulltime because he could clean up and sleep!
Step:4 found his own apartment.
Though not everyone has a car to use and living in those shelters is madness. He lived in one shelter once and never went back!
The worst of the human condition is the fact that you have to be the person who says I see you and know that the rest of the world doesn't give a s***💘🦉😭💕
So so true
Thank you, Sir for your service. May God bless you with a home & good health. Mark continue your work of purpose.
Lovely man. This world is just to awful for beautiful people
What a intelligent gentleman with good communication. Glad he is getting back on his feet
I love this man. He is a vet who served his country with honor. Most important he is NOT a dope addict and he wants to work! NO WAY should this fine lovely man spend one hour homeless in my book organizational check boxes be damned. This man deserves housing right now this instant. If I had it in my power, I'd put his house keys in his hand and drive him to his new lockable front door. I think this man deserves Housing First no question, PERIOD! My only confusion is why did he leave his vital papers, Social Security Card, Honorable Discharge Form & State ID in a street shanty to be thrown away by authorities. A street abode is not a home! Those few vital papers don't weigh a ton. It appears street homelessness damaged his reasoning skills! Poor soul!
Even stray cats and dogs are treated better. Thankfully I left the US more than 10 years ago and have a much better and freer life devoid or crazy cops and drug users.
Lol…after making $ in the US system…that people are banging down our border doors to get into and utilize.
GOOD FOR YOU!! Where did you go to? The crazy cops here in California made me homeless, because they thought I was some kind of criminal, and they were out to get me one way or other!
@@robertchilders8698 I first moved to Panama, then Ecuador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Big differences with police. The electric torture devices are only used in the US. Bullets over 38 cal/9mm are only used in the US, explosive/expansive bullets are only used in the US. People nearly all handcuffed in front not behind the back. All as required by the Geneva's Conventions. US Cops will say the Geneva's Conventions only apply to War. No it applies to how Citizens are treated by police as well.
Cops in Florida and Texas are even worse.
Best part is I made absolutely no money my last 23 years in the US. I lived on savings that long and owned two travel trailers. 3 weeks after I arrived in Panama I registered numerous Patents, Copyrights and set up Manufacturing and Sales Contracts with Alibaba in China and my income went to over $300,000 a year. Something I could never have done in the US.
Even if you speak to a US cop just once. You are on record and will be watched.
As to homeless there are very few and I have seen them sleeping on the sidewalks in front of police stations undisturbed in all 4 countries.
Freedom in America? No Way! More than anywhere if you don't have decent money you are a mere speed bump crossing the street.
@@robertchilders8698 Incidentally Panama is great for US Veterans. Free Medical at any Hospital or Clinic and they Bill the VA. Other countries are South Korea, Japan, Philippines, UK and Italy. And in Mexico $1000 a month will spend like $300. In Mexico City are Private Rooms called Pensions. Twin bed, dresser, chair, common kitchen, bathrooms, showers, tv room down the hallway includes WIFI. $108 a month!. In Nicaragua room and board commonly can be found for $40 to $60 a month. You're on your own for lunch.
My home in Costa Rica is 7 bed/5 bath, 4 car garage on 23 acres for which I pay $153 a month. No invites, my lease agreement states my wife and self and 2 dogs as occupants. And no it would take you years to find something like this. But in 4 countries I have never paid over $180 a month for a 3/2 house.
My husband is a 24 yr veteran and I know for a fact this guy speaks the truth. The VA always acts like they care about you in public and you hear a lot of "thank you for your service" but it is mostly all for show.
The really poor people are those in the back, passing by in their big vehicles, while others sleep in tents, not realizing, that they are next in line, because America is a developing country, just developing downwards, not upwards, and sooner or later, most of them will be homeless too
If you don’t ask for your ID back from SDPD or harbor police they will take it with them. They don’t give a damn. And it’s really messed up. It’s happened to me twice. I forgot to ask for my freaking ID back. Never saw it again. I went to the police headquarters to see if one of the cops turned my ID into lost and found or something, and HELL NO. It was gone
GIVE this MAN ENDLESS BLESSINGS💯👍🙏
what are those
God bless him with housing, a job, and being reunited with his family.
Get back with his family. It crushed him
I'm not surprised the law enforcement would do that I see it happen every day in San Antonio Texas
Law Enforcement should be ashamed of themselves , instead of destroying the homeless , help them with programs and not taking ID's and SS cards . where I am law enforcement try and help this is what you call protect and serve. Thank you for helping us in CT.
Sounds like these organizations don't care about these veterans. As far as all the homeless people out here, the top officials, government, etc. want no parts of really helping them or putting into action real solutions.
Capitalist world reality check !!!
Elections are beginning. Cornel West for president. He won't live in the Whitehouse until others can have a home.
It's pure class war. The wealthy don't want the rabble, the poor anywhere near them. Nimby puts a stop to low income housing instantly. It's class war,
God Bless you Ken. I did many years on the streets of San Diego due to a personal injury on the MTS Bus and a dirty lawyer. You have such a nice kind face. I Pray that San Diego Veterans will take care of you. Let me know if George is still on the streets near Ralphs on First Avenue. Take care Mark, I love what you do.
Thanks!
Since nobody else even bothered to leave a comment or a thumbs up I thought I would and say God bless you for your generosity in Jesus name amen. ❤🙏
Woah much appreciated man
Thank you for the support.
Does it even go to the guy? The CZcams creator doesn’t need money for utilizing these people to spread awareness lol
He seems such a nice man .
He is a good looking intelligent motivated person and I hope he is able to get together with his family! What can we do to help him directly?
Thank you for the video, it is sad, but we all need to know these things! Nothing will change if we don't know they need changing!
He should have had all his important documents with him at all times. Thank you for your service sir ❤
You have no clue, what happens on the Streets.
thats widly impractical and probably even more dangerous than keeping them in the tent
@@jacobus57 not impractical to carry a backpack lol but to carry all your documents in it? At all times? What if it rains? What if you put it down for a second unattended? Your statement indicates a lack of understanding of these kinds of situations and is idiotic.
Soon we may all be homeless. Trust God. Its truly end times. Christ is with us.

End times that have been going on for centuries ❤
Psalm 12:5 “Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord; “I will place him in the safety for which he longs.” I wonder when the lord will deliver.
Yes, and that includes those of us who feel we are better than these folks.
America is leaning that way more and more each day!!!😢
very moving testimony.
Probably one of the most important channel on the net.
I lived in San Diego and it is the worst for homeless people they really make it hard for them.
He looks like Peter Frampton 🎸
I hope the VA can help him get his DD-214 and he can get some dental care. He is obviously an intelligent man with great potential.
I pray his wish comes true ❤🙏
Absolutely criminal behavior on the part of the so called police. I'm thoroughly disgusted! This man deserves BETTER!!!
The ACLU really needs to be told about all this, and take the SDPD on !! They certainly have the clout to force the cops to stop using such abusive tactics. Long overdue. Everyone can email them, and sign or create petitions, to end that sick practice!
He's blessed he's not disabled, not been in any war campaigns, the fact he can actually work,he is so fortunate.san Diego is one of the very worst places for vets
I ADMIRE YOU FOR BEING A STRONG MAN .
*Sad to hear her United States citizen/veteran cannot get housing right away, but illegal to cross the border and get them that day, along with assistance for food.. wow l*
Thank you for your service . Praise your for going forward.I’ve worked for the Vets@have feed the homeless .
I'm a Navy veteran wife this appalling !!!
Also thanks for ur service!!🙋🙏
Prayers for You Good Buddy,
May You get all Wishes come true. ❤
Given opportunities , motivation and family. Great 3 wishes.
this seems like unfair way to treat someone who served their country, he deserves housing not losing his documents and income too.
Can we help Ken get back to his family? Edit: Let's all pray for Mark, too. He sure is carrying a lot.

God bless you sweetheart I no what you've going through
God Bless Ken and glad to hear that he will soon have a roof over his head. Just a bit of good advice everyone, NEVER leave your personal documents lying around. Keep them with you 24/7 in your bag. Be careful who you trust in this world. God be with you always & allow Jesus into your heart wholeheartedly. God grant you happiness Ken.
Thanks Mark, for the tireless work that you do.
From an Aussie lady downunder! ❤❤ love what you do. You should come over and film people here in Australia who are homeless.
I'm a veteran I've VA and everything because of covid and my disability having PTSD going through Cancer and out of work for 3 years I do not make enough money and my final day for me to be thrown out of my house is September 14
why would anyone leave their identification, social security card, important documents in their tent? if youre not in that tent , things get stolen anyway.
The only real way to protect your valuables, like documents, is to rent a small storage unit, and hold onto it. Leaving one's docs, ID, etc. is very naive and reckless. Homeless people do steal from each other, the ones with no personal honor, anyway.
Don't give up, just keep pushing on
I guess one should always keep their documents in a backpack on you all the time.Sad.😢
I was about to say that! Everything valuable stays in a backpack in which stays by my side at ALL times.

I have a homeless Son with mental health issues and I'm in a situation where I can't let him live with me. It's worrying me to death . His older brother and sister are cruel they don't care at all about him which really angers and disappoints me in them I am ashamed of them . I walk and meet him take him food and drinks gave him a duffle bag on wheels I'm doing everything I can to help him. He has extreme paranoia and is learning disorder and many other issues I realize he is hard to deal with at times but he only needs help long enough to get a job and get himself a place to live. I pray that God opens his family's heart and soul and gets him help.

May God inspire the people around him who can help, the resources to do so and the right heart and approach that helps him find safety, some purpose in life that is meaningful .
My mom has the same problem. She's somewhere in olympia she's been gone all week.
She has a house but she's so mentally screwed up that she doesn't stay there.
We live in another state so we can't even help her.
Unfortunately, the law doesn't give us permission to go. Move her down to california and have her forced in to taking her medicine.
She has bipolar. She's been doing this for years..
Having manic episodes
In California there are some new laws pending that will make it where you must go to rehabilitation centers and hospitals for these conditions. In California, only relatives have the legal rights to have this done, unfortunately. Left by themselves in the streets, is why so many get harmed in some way. There are some homeless people, who aren't able to rent or pay bills, because they can't take care of themselves. So they need residential facilities to live in. Lots of money is available for both affordable housing and facilities for those who need them, but because of corruption, the money is stolen continually! Executives and administrators are way overpaid!!! Just research this subject, and you will see for yourselves!
Cogratulations !🎉

Find this gentleman a dentist. Hevis well spoken, he obviously has skills, and he seams truthful. Unfortionatly, many people will look at his teeth and dismis him for a job, espwcialy one that is customer based . Very sadly, its also a very dangerous health issue. If Ny of the missing teeth become infected, he will be in trouble, all the way to coma or death...
I agree about how missing teeth are perceived, but the reason his teeth are missing is to PREVENT infection.
Broken or cracked teeth are more at risk for infection. To prevent this, they pull them.
The cosmetic and aesthetic issues are very real though.
There are many reasons other than drug and alcohol abuse and too much sugar that can cause cracked teeth.
Mainly, regular dental checkups, cleanings and the ability to afford fixing teeth as the problem arise, is the main reason
It's not affordable for many.
I Lost a job opportunity, because my fingernails were to clean for hard worker! I know for a fact that you can also loose job opportunities by having bad teeth!
