I am an AMG guy, but you have to admit, Porsche makes some fine, well thought out cars that are generally brilliant at whatever they are designed to do...The AMG GT is probably the most amazing overall car they have made since the CLK GTR...that car ws epic! I can't wait to see if they ever replace that...it is a good time to be a car guy...especially one with deep, deep pockets!
They left one aspect out. The MB is WAY safer in a crash than the Porsche. You can't go wrong with either car. I'd go with the MB AMG GT-S.
+slabsides1 You can't seriously be considering safety when choosing between two sports cars. After perhaps off-road capabilities, that's about the last thing I'd think about.
Porsche for me. I love the AMG GT and it's an improvement over the SLS but it's just not me. I'm not going to hope on the bandwagon either. Yes the Merc looks good but I think the 991 is a beautiful design and I just like it better.

Martin Espinoza Yeah to each their own about the looks, I've just always found the 991 911s very attractive. Honestly, it would be my weekend car. I like the AMG GT but I'd rather have an S63 AMG Coupe, especially if I wanted a more practical GT car.
***** Totally I'd rather buy used SLS. Miles better for me and I don't think this AMG GT BS can compete with that. Not in terms of looks and not in terms of engine. I'd leave sound system aside cause i'm B&O fanboy.

J0lker I wouldn't take a car off of my list solely based off what type of drivetrain it has unless I lived in an area that depended on it. Seriously, the M6 is fast, faster than some of the AWD cars in it's class.

They're both stunning cars, and represent amazing engineering from both companies. Just appreciate them for what they are.

***** Well mostly because of the terrible transmission. I have to admit I have yet to test the AMG GT which is supposed to have a better software for the Speed Shift tranny, but I have my doubts. And in the Porsche you just have such a unique and direct connection to the road and to the N/A engine like nowhere else. BUT, I have to really try the AMG GT(S) before making any conclusions...
I'd take the Porsche as well. I'd honestly rather have the S63 Coupé over the AMG GT but that's solely due to my taste in big GT cars.

My question was regarding why you were disappointed with AMGs. I'm a Porsche fan myself. As for the GT, it has a 7 speed DCT, it's not the same torque converter auto found on the new C63, for example. It's the same transaxle Getrag unit used on the SLS and the Ferrari 458, with updated software from the SLS.

No, the gearbox on the 458 and the SLS is exactly the same Getrag model, but with different software calibration. The SLS's shifts are indeed slower, but Mercedes made them deliberately slower so the gearbox would handle abuse. That's why there's several cases of 458s with gearbox issues and virtually none regarding the SLS.
An automatic gearbox doesn't connect to a foot, but i get your point about the importance of a transmission. I kinda disagree with how i view AMG's transmissions. Apart from the SLS which uses a dual clutch, which i haven't touched, i found as i drove along the 7 speed non DCT boxes to be adequate. Not as good as a DCT, but very good for a non DCT. And the important of millisecond shifts is overrated and unnecessary for most people. Still, of course, a DCT would always be my choice.
The test should be amg gt vs 911 turbo and amg gt s vs 911 turbo s.

Those who say the the 911 is a bad daily driver have never driven it or sat in one for that matter. It's a perfect car. Absolutely perfect.

I can feel it right just at seeing the review how the Mercedes looks crazy sharp as a blade esp. the steering yet I don't know how it is gonna look like in the real world when driving.

As a daily driver I'd choose the AMG GT simply because the motor is more silent.
Both amazing cars but the car I'd have has to be the GTS especially with a Ducktail spoiler, it looks to damn good!
If you would have asked me 1 year ago, I would have said Porsche, but after having bought my first Benz this year, I will take the AMG GT any day.

Porsche wins every head to head, there's no comparing any car to a Porsche anymore. AMG GT is visually gorgeous, it looks more like a super car - but that's based on the subjective common understanding of what a super car looks like. A 911 is a super car in my opinion in a class of its own. It performs at par or better than majority of supercars (depending on how high up you go in the 911 spectrum). It has a look of it's very own, and it's built completely different. An AMG GT (in my opinion) is just a slightly different twist on what you get from most other high performance cars. Porsche is something completely different, the entire driving experience shares nothing in common with other sports cars.
I was looking for a 2016/2017 lightly preowned 911 and went into my local Porsche dealership. They had an AMG GT S and Maserati Granturismo for sale as well that were trade ins. I was instantly able to rule out the Maserati because the 2013 porsche panamera gts I was coming out of felt faster. I wasn't even going to test drive the AMG GT S but he insisted that it would be the closest thing to a 911 in that price range so to give it a go after I drive the 911. I drove a 2016 911 black edition fully loaded (which is the car I own now) and I was blown away, the engine screams at high RPM and the car is insanely interactive - it responds to everything you're trying to do so instantaneously. I drove the AMG GT S right after, it was about $15k CAD more than the 911 and it was fully optioned out. The exhaust note is amazing, very loud and in a straight line it was disgustingly fast compared to the 911 (not on the launch, Porsche launches amazingly so they felt more or less the same). Interior was a bit more spacious and felt to be more comfortable than the 911 but I had not driven it long distance.
Overall, it was a really hard decision to make, to this day I think the AMG GT looks better and is more visually appealing - but a Porsche is a Porsche and none of that great stuff the Merc had would have me taking a Mercedes over a 911 to be honest.
What Porsche does is amazing. Best sportscar in the world.

The AMG GTC fixed the ride issues of the GT/GTS, and is cheaper than a 911 GTS. Not sure why you said the GTS is cheaper than a GT, not true.

Both are lovely - and expensive - cars, BUT what the tester didn't mention was the 911 has had 50 years of tweeking and Porche can only tweak it for so long then they reach its limits, but the GTS being new has masses of room to be improved. So the 911 is reaching or is just about at its evolutionary limit, and the GTS is just getting into its stride. Well that's my conclusion anyway.

No, Benz AMG GT doesn't break new ground - the SLR & the SLS did already. The AMG GT just carries on. I'd go for the Porsche (too many C-Classes on the road)

Though given the choice, I'd take the F-type R Coupé. It's even more bonkers than the AMG GT.
That's what gets to me about these tests. 99% of will never take them to the limit or the track like in ever. So I want to know. How are they on lung distance drives. What's it like behind the wheel at average speeds. Which sounds better. Which parks better. Which had better resale. Which do you think looks better. And yes. Which would you buy if not on the track like a mad person on acid.

I love 911s but my issue with them is that a lot of people like them too. I don't care that the 911 doesn't get a lot a lot of attention on the road I think its a good thing, but what I don't like is that I see too many of them on road every week, I'll see at least 3 and its almost certain that Ill see one every time I go on the high way. I get it, it's a perfect machine but it'd be nice if those 100k buys you some exclusivity for that reason I'd choose the amg gt, or the f type R over the 911 carrera.
I'd also choose the v12 vantage over a turbo. Even though I think the 911 turbo is the most perfect machine ever made.
Both cars are undoubtedly fantastic, but there is something with the Porsche that is very special, maybe because it is a bit more "raw" or basic that makes me appreciate it. I don't think that there is a definitive winner, but if I had the money, I would probably by the Porsche gts.

A fresh Mercedes AMG GT or GTS will give you more excitement of having an exotic toy, perhaps a trait that can't be said with a 911 GTS, or other 911 sub-models that seem like everyone drive one model or another. Porsche 911 has been around since the 60's or early 70's.
I'll go for the amg gt. Looks so nice & 911s don't. Who cares if 200ms faster to 60.
