- this is a video i made to the US Coast Guard's anthem "Semper Paratus". the Coast Guard doesn't get as much attention as the other branches, until that is you're drowning in the fridged waters of the Atlantic Ocean and your only hope is that one of those Beee...autiful orange 'n' white choppers comes over the horizon.
The Lyrics (sung between 0:21 and 0:53) are,
We're always ready for the call
We place our trust in thee!
through surf and storm and howlin' gale high shall our purpose be!
Semper Paratus is our guide,
Our Fame and glory too...
to fight, to save or fight and die
Aye! Coast Guard we're all for you!

I was Navy ... and I'll tell you I can't get through this march without tears of pride welling up in my eyes. I salute you, Coast Guard. Semper Paratus.
Many people don't realize that during WW2 the guys who operated the landing craft for the D-Day invasion were Coast Guardsmen.
+Rich Eaton Like, say, SM1 Munro?
+Rich Eaton Not only there, but in the Pacific also,
. . . That was the Pacific: Guadalcanal, 27 Sep 42
+Rich Eaton They did a lot during ww2 that most people don't know about.
my great grandfather was a landing craft driver at Omaha
I Served Honorably For 4 Years (1966-1970), And I'm Very Proud Of It. Don't Call Me And Other Fellow Coasties, Shallow Water Sailors, Hooligan's Navy, Or Puddle Pirates. Most Of Us Have Had & Have Seen More Green Water Under Our Decks, Than Many Will Ever Hope To See. Many Have Served In Vietnam, And Other Wars. Many Have Lost Life And Limb In Peacetime Rescue Missions, To Save Other Innocent Lives. We Are Proud, & We Are The Elite. Semper Paratus (Which Means Always Ready), & Bravo Zulu (Which Means A Job Well Done To Those Who Have Served, & To Those Who Continue To Serve)
Thank you for your service.
Fred Atkinson Thanks Fred to you, and for your nice comment. If you are a veteran, Thanks So Much for your service as well. Wishing you and your family A Very Merry Christmas, and to all of my Coast Guard Brothers and Sisters, along with your families, A Very Merry Christmas & A Happy, Safe, & Healthy New Year.
Harold Tartell Harold, I'm not a veteran. But you don't have to be a veteran to love this nation. Unfortunately, there are too many who have been taught to hate their own nation. They need to step back, reexamine what they've told, and then they will realize the lies that the liberal left are laying on them. America has made lots of mistakes. That's inevitable for anyone. It's the freedom to do something about it that matters. That's what we have. If we are to keep our freedoms, we must do it responsibly. God bless America and her allies in the cause of freedom! It is something we will lose if our current leaders have their way.
Thanks for your service Harold :D
I'm working on becoming a member of the CGAUX Intepreter Corps.
Thanks for your service. I served U.S. Army - 1970 - 1973 - got sent way down yonder Viet NAM - would love to see draft reinstated for National Service for all - no exceptions - no exemptions - either military, Peace Corps, hospital work, etc.
For those of you saying the CG is not military, it is. It's the only military branch under DHS. While in times of war can be transferred to DoN
|USCG| Phoenix Used to be under the Treasury Department, except in wartime.
+MarcellusTheGreen Also plank-owners on Department of Transportation
Under the Department of Homeland Security, yes.
Little known fact...in Vietnam , many of the River Rats (Mekong Patrol boats) were Coasties
The Coast Guard is unique among the five armed services in having both a military and a federal law enforcement role. The Coast Guard and it's processor the US Revenue Cutter Service have fought in every maritime war in our Nation's history, including the Quasi-War with France in 1799. The revenue cutter McCullough was with Admiral Dewey at Manila Bay, 1898. Coast Guard Signalman First Class Douglas Albert Munro was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his heroism during savage fighting at Point Cruz during in the Second Battle of the Matanikau, part of the Guadalcanal Campaign. Many other heroic battlefield actions. So anyone who claims the Coast Guard is not "military" -- get the hell out of here!
I served and I still feel the pride 30 years later. Semper Paratus my fellow mates.
Thanks for your service! CG is what I'm gonna do. Do you have any advice?
You will be trained as a first responder. People will need your help. Take pride in that. You will be a hero. Search and rescue is something to be seen as a remarkable service.
Jonah Blessum Directly or inderectly your contribution will save lives.
+Matt Ellison I feel the same way. It's been a long time since I passed through TRACEN Alameda (Bravo 109 - 1976), but I'd do it all over in a heart beat. Semper Paratus !
Matt Ellison I’m joining as well. My grandfather was in the Navy, my father was an Airman, and I can’t wait to be a Coast Guardsman. I’m willing to die to stop human trafficking in particular, but I heavily agree with you brother, search and rescue is something that should be respected in the highest.
My oldest son is a COASTIE serving in Bahrain near Saudi Arabia....damn proud of him and all of you in the Guard.....from a proud dad and a Vietnam era
Air Force veteran
Jim West thank you for your service and your sons service
Semper paratus
For people saying that CG isn't a "real military branch", the coast guard served in every major united states military conflict
That is very true.
The USCG indeed counts as military service; they are right there in times of war AND peace. They are our national maritime police force...and I'll surely bet that if you are/were ever rescued by the Coast Guard, you'll want to hug and kiss each Coastie on that helicopter/cutter like they were your own son/daughter! We don't thank them enough. God Bless the U.S. Coast Guard! God Bless our beloved country!!
I have the utmost respect for the Coast Guard
Served proudly in the USCG a long time ago and I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Semper Paratus!
Michael White Thanks for your service.
Vegetarian4136 VGCP TPNG CPOY IPPP NODD thank you! When i'm done with the coast gaurd i'm going Army. Or that's the plan for now haha
My son is a recruit at TRACEN in Cape May, and will graduate in 2 weeks, couldn't be more proud!!
I was a firefighter - different thing, but I already know that something you're not expecting can trigger a particular memory, and the next thing you know, you're not in the moment anymore because you're immersed in that memory. I know without being told that you know about this. And thank you for your service.
Much respect to all the C-130 SAR crews, past and present! You guys still don't get enough credit for all you do! Semper Paratus!
yeah, my best friend's older brother is finally leaving for Cape May, and my friend himself wants to join the coast guard. i myself want to join the navy, but i got nothing but respect for the USCG.
Good luck
Here's the whole song:
First Verse:
From Aztec Shore to Arctic Zone,
To Europe and Far East,
The Flag is carried by our ships
In times of war and peace;
And never have we struck it yet
In spite of foemen's might,
Who cheered our crews and cheered again
For showing how to fight.
Chorus:
We're always ready for the call,
We place our trust in Thee.
Through surf and storm and howling gale,
High shall our purpose be.
"Semper Paratus" is our guide,
Our fame, our glory too.
To fight to save or fight and die,
Aye! Coast Guard we are for you!
Second Verse:
SURVEYOR and NARCISSUS,
The EAGLE and DISPATCH,
The HUDSON and TAMPA,
These names are hard to match;
From Barrow's shores to Paraguay,
Great Lakes or ocean's wave,
The Coast Guard fights through storms and winds,
To punish or to save.
Third Verse:
Aye! We've been always ready!
To do, to fight, or die
Write glory to the shield we wear
In letters to the sky.
To sink the foe or save the maimed,
Our mission and our pride.
We'll carry on 'til Kingdom Come,
Ideals for which we've died.
Never seen a version like that but I love it!
@@m2cscream do you happen to know where a recording of the other verses are? I can only find the first of the new version of first of the old
My grand father was a coastie during ww2. And died when an artillery shell hit the landing craft he was driving. Anybody who says that the coast guard is stupid, harms the memory of him and other coast guardsmen. And my great uncle was working in Cape cod the night the Pentledon and fortmercer accidents happened. Of course he was off duty and stuck at home, but he was able to eventually get to the Mercer after it sank and helped with wreckage clean up.
I served... I spent countless hours in the engine room and countless more hours on patrol in a 21ft RHIB... I pulled dead men from the water.. I pulled live children from the water... I saved a few lives... I watched a few slip beneth the waves... sad, but 20 years later, I can't see the faces of those I saved, but I can see the ones I didn't... Sempre Paratus
I know that feeling. 22 years served for me and I know exactly what you are talking about
When I was in the University of Nebraska marching band, we would play an armed forces medley once a year. This one was and always will be my favorite.
Charlie 54, 1966. Best training company you would ever find. I spend thirty years in the guard and retired a Senior Chief Petty Officer. Served on many cutters and served at stations and bases, from the Outer Banks to Hawaii, Vancover B.C. to Mexican port of calls. Saved lives and busted a few people along the way. Loved my time in the USCG. BMCS
BMCS. That's the goal!
Whiskey 18, Cape May July, 1972
Proud veteran of over 20 years service. Over 15 years sea service, from WHEC 718 USCGC CHASE to WLR75513 USCGC CHIPPEWA, and Cutters in between. From Boston,Mass. to ROOSEVELT ROADS Naval Station Puerto Rico. FS1 James H. Whalen, USCG Retired.
To all the men and women who are serving and have served in the U.S. Coast Guard thank you for your service to our country. Today August 04, 2020 marks the 230th birthday of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Of the five official military marches, this one is my favorite, even though I'm an Air Force veteran.
My father warned of the Dangers in the Coast Guard, his ship the Minesweeper YMS 133 went down with all hands lost off Coos Bay Oregon Feb 20 1943. Dad was sent to Alaska to crew a Yippee Boat (Coastal Patrol). It was so cold.. they had to cook with a blowtorch. The Coast Guard has always been a Class Act. Never say anything bad about the Coast Guard, they are Part of The Navy In Time of War.
Remember. Veterans died for your freedom.
The Coast Guard often doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
However, many would have to admit that they were glad that the Coast Guard was there when they need to be rescued at sea!
And of all of the military anthems, I like the Coast Guard's the best.
still got my fathers WW 11 Coasties hat...
To all current and former USCG people out there, thank you for your service; words that are not said nearly as often as they need to be said.
During my service in the U.S. Navy, my most memorable moment was assisting the Coast Guard with the rescue of merchant seamen when their vessel sank. The Coast Guard helicopters landed on our aircraft carrier to refuel in order to complete the round trip.
If I were allowed to re-live my life again, I would choose to serve as a U.S. Coast Guard SAR (Search And Rescue) pilot. I would get more satisfaction saving lives than taking lives.
Bravo Zulu to all my comrades from the Coast Guard.
Thank you so much for your comment Angelica. Also please Thank your dad from me for his 30 years of Faithful & Dedicated service to this wonderful branch of the armed services. Thirty years is a long time. I would also like to wish to him, A Very Happy & Healthy Retirement.
I spent 20+ years in the army and reserves. It was not until I moved to southeastern Connecticut that I came to "know" the Coast Guard. I never even thought of them before.
If I were a young man today, it would Coast Guard for me. I really think they are special.
1970-1971 - USCGC 383 Castle Rock ( As our tour ended in December of 71' we turned the Rock over to the South Vietnamese Navy)
1972-1974 - USCG SAR STATION Brant Point, Nantuckett Mass.
Well from the civilians that you fought for and rescued for and did your job for... remember my face and remember our thanks. You are awesome Sir.
God Bless the United States Coast Guard. Did you know the first trans atlantic crossing by airplane was flown by US Naval Aviators and a US COAST GUARD aviator? the NC4.
George -- yep, in 1919 -- and I think I'm one of the few! I first learned about it through medal collecting many years ago, with the NC-4 Medal, which was authorized by Congress in 1929 for award to those who participated in the epic 1919 flight. Originally a larger "table medal" it was also struck in a standard-sized "wearable" medal for the military tunic. Originals are very rare, as you can imagine. I have a good "museum-quality" copy in my collection. Brave men, the crew of the NC-4. .
God Bless the men and women of the US Coast Guard. They are some of the most professional and bravest people you'd ever want to meet. They go where others dare not go.
To all the Coasties that risk their asses to save OURS!! God Bless and Save you all!!!
You have to go out, you do not have to come back, helluva SAR motto!
I'm proud and honored to be the daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter of coasties. Semper Paratus to the men and women who keep the rest of us safe. God bless you all.
The real motto is "You (Coastguardsmen) have to go out (on rescues), but you don't have to come back (hence the risks)
Thank you for uploading this. Until this past weekend, I had never even heard the Coast Guard's anthem- it's very stirring, indeed.
I served from 1970 to 1974, my father served from 1944 to 1946. May lives, property saved and men brought home.
I love it. My dad is a retired Coastie. 1947 to 1966. DCC
It really sucks that people think the Coast Guard isn't a military branch. They go to boot camp, they learn the Chain of Command, rank structure, how to wield a rifle, close drill, physical fitness, and discipline. I've watched the Coast Guard at boot camp. Simply no joke. They all think it's going to be a push-over. I loved their faces when they got there. Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, if they say anything bad about Coasties, they have no respect for themselves and the country they serve.
As a former destroyer sailor and having crossed the Atlantic in a 50 foot J-boat I have the utmost respect for U.S. Coast Guard seamanship (the very best) and uncanny ability to find a boater in distress. For example 3 AM and 26 miles 270 degrees from Rosarito (where you'd least expect it) within minutes of a spinnaker problem -- they appear. WOW! And they are incredibly able. Utmost respect to these fearless sailors.
Repaired a Buoy Tender, manned by the US Coast Guard when a command detonated mine nearly cut it in half. The Flat Hats have my total respect and are welcomed as a comrade-in-arms. I have also observed them 3 days after 9/11 whilst in the Merchant Marine as a Engineer on a 300 ft Passenger Cruise Vessel. Trust me they are the answer to near coastal defense!
Recruit company Hotel 44 and damned proud of it!
Like they say, " You have to go out but you don't have to come back " .
Thank you for posting this. The most beautiful of all the service hymns.
my brother, cousin all retired from the USCG very proud of them great port of calls
Thank God and our men and women in uniform that we made it to another weekend, there are many who didn't. Semper Paratus !
I have always had the greatest respect for the U.S. Coast Guard. It takes a special type of person to go out in the worst of weather to save distressed ships, or to protect our shores. Both of which they do magnificently. They are true heroes in every sense of the word.
When you said "Puddle Pirates", it brought me back to that funny bar scene with the Navy bar in the Guardian.
Thanks for serving in the finest service! I hope to be a Coastie when I'm old enough.
I don't know why but Semper Paratus is my favorite of the military anthems. And I was never in the military nor have I ever had a relative that served in the Coast Guard. I did have a close friend in the Coast Guard, though.
Thank God and our men and women in uniform that we made it to another day, there are many who didn't. Semper Paratus !
wow, just wow, i can't claim any of my video had that kind of affect before. thank you for your service Guardsman!
As a Viet Nam Vet the "Flat Hats" had my respect as thety too went into harms way as did their brothers in the Navy Riverine Forces.Later when I joined the Merchant Marine and got some of their training I have no reservations to say that they are the pros on intercoastal security and S.A.R. When your ship is in deep do-do there is only one service that is trained to come to your aid and I tip my hat to them.
Happy Birthday t220nd Birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard. The oldest sea going service. Founded in 1790 at Newburyport Mass. Bless all Coasties ,those who risk their lives daily, and those who "have passed the bar"-especially my husband, Jack McCormack. He was a career Coastie, a great husband & father, and a Hell of a helo pilot. Semper Paratus.
Thank you. I enjoyed this!
I was in my first week of CG boot camp when the Point Welcome was shot up. Later went to Viet Nam on the USCG Gresham.
Fantastic!!
love your terms of use^^
I was looking around for patriotic songs and there is a conflict on every one I went to
thank you for keeping your comments board clean
We vow to rescue those in peril on the sea
To fight the thugs of smuggling, and scum of piracy
We'd rather die with honour then see our honour tarred.
Hail to those serve in the United States Coast Guard!
i really enjoy this anthem (not quite as much as i like "Wild Blue Yonder") because it has such a great variety of instruments that you can hear
And now the tune is stuck to my head……
@Reaganwannabe The terror of any Commence Raider and the Bane of Submarines while safeguarding the Convoys and answering the calls of distress to finally getting the troops to the beach and then onto the beach and the wounded back to the hospital ships.
Thanks Brother!!!
Here's the Dobie Fight song:
So here's to the Longhorns Fighting Song
We sing both loud and clear
Our team is better THAN THE REST!
We have no doubt or fear.
And though sink the Longhorns is their cry
They can not beat or Game
For Dobie High will FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
And stand strong in might and fame
Flew air rescue for three years, three months, and three days. 108 souls to my ledger. Best time of my life!😀
Good video, I think the coast guard hymn is the best one of them all. I've spent 32 1/2 years in the army, but my son joined the coast guard. We are very proud parents and our prayers go out to all coasties. Well actually all servicemen and women. Stay safe and come home!
Thank you for your service
Nice video. The Coasties go to war, too. I had the pleasure of meeting several USCG helicopter pilots in Vietnam, flying S&R for the air force. All were first rate flyers and many claim they are the best at what they do. Much respect! Not enough has been said about these vets..in fact many don't even know about the Coast Guard's participation in Vietnam. Helicopter pilot, USMC ret'd. In- country 1970-71
Great Video!
The USCG's only Medal of Honor winner in WW2 was a Higgin's boat cox'n. Douglas Munro.
This is brilliant. The USCG is so underappreciated by flat landers - They rock!
Great song to wake up my teenagers at 5 am to go fishing!
As a boater, the United States Coast Guard is my favorite branch of our armed services. I've never needed to call on them, but what a feeling to know they are there!
Awesome - 'bout time. My kid is in marching band in HS - they recently played a medley of the anthems of the armed services. I sent an email congratulating the band director who arranged it for including the Coast Guard anthem. We're forgotten so many times, like you said.
Matt Dillon, Radioman - USCG 1975-1979
Nice pix of my old ride..the CGC Jarvis WHEC 725 during unrep drills.
I served in the Army, 4 yrs 3 mos 2 days. I shot cannons and kept Kansas awake at night.
Then I served in the Coast Guard 5 yrs 2 days. I rode out "The Perfect Storm" searching for a fishing boat lost at sea on the USCGC Northland (WMEC904); Then I served on the USCGC Gallatin (WHEC721) and hunted and captured drug smugglers then rescued Haitian immigrants sailing on unseaworthy vessels on the same day in the Caribbean Sea; among other unsaid operations.
The Army was easy by comparison.
Proud to have served USCG 1972-1993.
Former USCG PO3. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat! "You have to go out. Nothing says you have to come back." Semper Paratus!
Just graduated from Cape May. Hooyah Yankee-195!
My grandpa was in the coastguard and it was awesome!! Go Coast Guard!!!!
I just turned 18 today and i plan on joining within a couple of months
OORAH!!! brother thank you for your service in our great Corps
One of my cousins served in the USCG for 27 years.
I might join the Coast Guard, I am a freshman atm but I am a direct descendant of Hopley Yeaton, so that would be cool to be in the US Coast Guard
You are right when you said, "the Coast Guard doesn't get as much attention as the other branches" Most people don't know or believe the CG was in Viet Nam or the gulf wars.
USCGC Sorrell, WLB 296, Cordova, Alaska (73-75)
Nantucket Lightship, WLV 612, Boston, Mass (75-77)
Once a Coastie always a Coastie.
always=semper, ready= Paratus
this song really lets you feel 'the strenght' :)
@triode1
My father was BMCS R.R Anderson " United States Coast Guard ,he served in WW2 ,Korea and Vietnam, He retired after 23 years of sacrifice and service to this country, My father was a coxwain on landing craft in WW2. He happened top beat me to Vietnam by a month in 65. Don't ever let anyone say that the Coast Guard is NOT a branch of the military .

Thank you, nice reminder of what we do, and how we get the job done...Happy 233rd Birthday USCG "Semper Paratus"
Thanks to all the Men and women for their service they are true heroes semper paratus
well, all the branches make fun of each other, i know, it's the same thing in my Navy Junior ROTC, no biggie though, we all realize we're on the same team
This is great!! My son is on his way to Cape May in 2 months and what a proud mom I am that he chose the Coast Guards.
Semper Paratus ! On this day in 1790, Congress authorized Secretary Alexander Hamilton's proposal to build 10 new cutters, starting the Revenue Cutter Service. Through these 229 years, we've grown, adapted, transitioned and developed into our modern day Coast Guard - the longest continuous seagoing service. #HBDCoastGuard #CG229
@Phantomregiment8 my dad has served 18 years in the USCG plus 2 in the army and i intend on joining after i graduate. From my experiences, the under-credited CG is amazing. i have never met such a close-knit group of guys. i wouldn't suggest joining if you don't like boats though, or rough seas, or harsh weather or seeing the entire American coastline. try applying to the academy before you enlist, you get better pay. hope it helps.
I like this song
The Coast Guard never gets the credit that they are due. Just watching the video indicates it. They're more than just the "fresh water sailors" the Navy 2:53 makes them out to be. And I say that as a former Marine and retired Navy reservist (Yes, there IS such a thing.).
And their march is pretty cool too.
Thanks for being a Coastie. My dad is a retired DCC Coastie. 22 years
I wonder how many people are alive and kicking because of his efforts?
I would imagine that it would be quite a few!
cool
@retiredcgw Everybody, he is right. The Coast Guard is involved in wars. Even part of the lyrics say "Our flag is carried by our ships in time of war, and peace." Also research wikipedia. Search "U.S. Coast Guard", and it will show the wars they fought in.
@McDago100 The U. S. Coast Guard, has seen combat in virtually every conflict fought by the United States since 1790. Most of the stories you heard were probably from the WW2 era when they were deployed alongside the Navy in both the Pacific and Atlantic.
