  • The Tequila industry has many issues, one of the biggest being the use of additives in tequila production. These tequila additives are chemicals that are legally allowed to make up 1% of the total volume of any tequila and they do not need to report it.
But what are these Additives? Why are they so bad? And why is this such a huge issue in the tequila industry today? In this video I go over all of those questions and dive deep into the problems facing the tequila industry and additives.

Great video. Some people have huge adverse reactions to certain artificial sweeteners. A diabetic expecting tequila to lower their blood sugar is in for a huge surprise if their drink has a huge amount of sugar added to it.
Lots of praise should go to TMM for taking initiative to create the whole additive free program.
If the brands are so proud of their flavor profiles and products, it would make sense for the crt to make them disclose the additives in the bottle.

So it's a bit different but it is present. Because Tequila is made with only the blue Weber agave it's more scrutinized and there's just so much more demand for one specific plant. Mezcal can be made from many many agave species (tho 90% of them are the Espadín variety) but I'm sure it's present in Mezcal production as well.

Good job! As I was watching I kept thinking of things I hoped you'd talk about, forming my response, but you hit it all on the head!
It's a strange situation: tequila is really popular, but so much of that is because of the shitty celebrity brands. I've won over many people by explaining the additives and introducing good brands, but so many more just want the sweet crap because it's easy to drink and tastes good in Red Bull. Sad!

    • @Lui_Fern
      @Lui_Fern  Před rokem +2

Yes! That paradox of Celebrity tequila is a huge one. On the one hand it's helped to explode tequilas popularity but at the other end of that the exploding popularity of tequila has also exacerbated the use of Additives and promoted other unsafe practices in the tequila industry.
And to your other point, yes. It's so sad that a lot of people just don't care and just want their overly sweet fake vanilla alcohol. But you know what? To each their own. Leaves the good stuff to us. 😂 Anyway happy you enjoyed this video!

For me the biggest problem with the additive laden Tequilas is that most of the time the agave takes a back seat, and some can be confused as being a lower quality rum. If I want that Vanilla sweetness I'd just get a high quality rum, or seek a bourbon. If I am drinking Tequila, I want it to actually taste like agave. Just knowing that the quality of the tequila is most likely inferior (agave plant too young, diffuser, etc) and just being masked tp sell to the masses I can't roll with that knowing I can get better quality, better tasting for less $$$.

Bourbon suffers from the same things lol. Many of them have suffered from charcoal filtering then have glycerin caramel colour and oak extract added. You have to specifically search for bourbons that show that nothing of the above has been done. Scotch is the same, rum is the same. Ever spirit has the same problem with this industrialization.... People age spirits in barrels reused for 10000 times just for the law of exceeding certain months or years to label it and then add colour and wood taste to cover it up... Consumers giving the nod are the problem really but it's a hard topic to start over CZcams comments.

@Royale With Cheese.. you are missing a key point. The quality and what you are paying for it. Many of these Additive laden Tequilas are of poor quality and are being sweetened up with chemicals to make them taste better. They a cheaply made compared to traditional quality Tequila and the juice should cost $10, but they add the additives and put it in a fancy bottle and make you pay $60 -$200 for it. Whereas if you bought a legitimately made tradition Tequila you maybe paying $29 - $100 and the flavors are all nature and of much higher quality. Tequila should taste like Agave and it should be pleasant enough to enjoy neat. If you want the AGAVE to be masked with additives, then you really don't want to drink Tequila. Buy a RUM, which has superior sweet flavors to those additive Tequilas and you'd save a lot of $$$ in the process.

In other words, if a person doesn't like or prefer to drink any STRAIGHT spirit product (like me), they should definitely not add an ice cube, ginger ale , store bought lime juice or 7 up as all of these "mixers etc." will contain some type of
"additives / chemicals" . I believe you could make informational content without the overly dramatic hyperbole or overly demonizing what any of your viewers might prefer to drink.

I heard the way you can find out if a spirit has additives is to simply cook it in a pan. The liquid will evaporate and all that will be left is a gunky tar which is the amount of additives

Since 1997 it can be up to 1% each of 4 different categories of additive, adding up to 4% according to Tequila Academy , referencing Section 4.1 of the 1997 DOF.
It's enough to give you a hangover that you wouldn't have had without the additives.

just to be clear, 100% agave means that 100% of the raw ingredient for making alcohol is agave, not that 100% of the ingredients in the liquid is agave. Those are two different equations.

Just put the tequilla in a pot, boil off the alcohol and see what's left. If there is any sticky shit in your pot, its got additives.

Make a video proving your accusations about tequila. Show us your credentials that make you a expert. Make a video with someone who works at distillery stating what you are saying is true. All hear say with no proof. Just show me some proof so I can start making videos about bad tequila

sounds like YOU are the one that needs to go and get more educated about this industry. At the end he gave a program that varifies these concerns. Go to it. Look at it. Research the different type of methods to create tequila and how the higher rated ones compare to the lower rated ones.
Also why are you offended? are you LeBron? you can be open minded and compare say Casamigos to Tequila Ocho and YOU decide what you like to drink.
