    Muscle Car of the Week Video #74: 1973 Camaro Z28 4-Speed
    #musclecar #v8tv
    www.musclecaroftheweek.com - What starts off looking like a plain-Jane 1973 Camaro is really a pretty rare Z/28 with the optional stripe and wing delete option. Why would you delete the iconic stripes and wing from a Z/28? We're not sure, but this nearly all-original 48,000 mile survivor was ordered this way. Other features include the original blue vinyl top and "natural" colored vinyl interior. The 350 / 4-speed manual combo makes this car fun to drive, even if power levels were slipping by 1973. It's an unusual car, and one of the more sedate Muscle Cars in the Brothers Collection!

    Kevin this reiterates my statement in regard to ordering a car back then (which I touched on your recent review of the Torino 429) and the myriad options you could check off. Keep bringing these "oddities" forward, like them a lot.

    I had a 1973 Type LT Z/28. With the Type LT package it didn't even have Z/28 emblems. Had the Type LT ones. It had no wing or stripes. Had vinyl top and a TH 400.

    Nice car , I am always amazed at how many people I talk to at car shows that like the look minus the spoilers rather than with the spoilers , or maybe they are just more vocal about it ,and I would love to hear from the original owner on why he bought it the way he did and why it has soo few miles ?

    If memory serves me correctly, the 73-74 z28 engine used the same low compression long block as the 71-72 z28 engines but used the L46/L82 hydraulic camshaft and with the mandated use of the EGR valve, the hi-rise aluminum intake and holley carburetor could no longer be used, so in there place came the standard low rise 4bbl intake with a quadrajet carburetor.

    I had a 1973 Z28 with turbo 400 Automatic, air conditioning and power steering. It has no spoilers but did have the stripes. There was a Z28 decal on the back of the car next to the gas filler,
    It was some sort of maroon red color with a black vinyl top and black interior. With a 3:42 posi it moved out just fine. Had the space saver tire too

    I big give away for the 1973, is those big front rubber bumper guards that came up over the top of the bumper. Compared to the 70,71,72, which only had supports under there. The reasoning for the change? Many customers complaining how just a little tap to the parked car ahead with that pointed bumper resulted in significant damage to the other parked car. "And now you know the rest of the story".....lol😁

  • @kimroser7020
    @kimroser7020 Před 3 měsíci

    What an oddball is right! Two things that we noticed that was not original was that 1973 Z28’s did not have a decal on the air cleaner. This decal was issued from a 1971 350 cubic inch motor! The four speed shiftball is also incorrect as they came with a lift to get into reverse shifter/ball.

  • @mikeo7221
    @mikeo7221 Před 7 lety +1

    I like it! Not a huge fan of the vinyl roof, but the white on white is cool and I like the stripe delete.
    Wouldn't be a slow car either... high 14's / low 15's? After the Trans Am and the Corvette, it was probably the next most respectable car in 1973?
    I'm a Mustang guy but the '70-73 Camaros (and all the 2nd gen cars, really) are really cool and underrated cars.

    Was the transmission the Saginaw 4-spd? I owned a '77 LT, which had some problems with the shifter and clutch. Honest: Without intending to do so, I was able to put the transmission in reverse and third at the same time. The mechanical interlock on the Saginaw only prevented reverse and first or second. I could only unlock the jammed transmission by banging on the arms with a rock. Being a broke student, I eventually fixed it by adding shims to the shifter stack.

But that's the way it came. Amazing nobody got hold of it and put spoiler on the rear deck, stripped off the vinyl top. then back to black on the inside. Truly a strange order!

    • @BernieBeetov
      @BernieBeetov Před 6 lety

      I love the simple plain sleeper look of the car. I keep hearing about the stripes being "deleted", but for the record stripes became an extra cost option on 1973 & 74 Z28s (i.e. Not Standard for the 1st time since the 1st Z28 of 1967). Technically only for 1972 could one "delete" the standard Z28 stripes via RPO DX3. Also on the 2nd gen Camaros the rear 1-pieces spoiler had been standard on the 1970-72 Z28; the famous 3-piece spoiler was actually a COPO option in '70 before taking over as the regular D80 spoiler option in 1971 (which marked a return to the front spoiler as part of the option). For 1973 (& '74) the Z28 option no longer included spoiler equipment as standard.
      Ironically for 1973 the rear bumper guards were no longer included with Z28 for the 1st time, yet 1973 marked the phase-in of tougher bumper standards, culminating with the 1974 5-mph front & rear impact standards. 1973 had 5-mph front & 2½-mph rear impact standards.
      The switch to the hydraulic cam for '73 ( it was actually the 1969/70 L46 Corvette cam) meant that A/C was now offered as an option.
      The reintroduced 1977½ Z28 was another story...
      Thanks for posting this car. It is certainly interesting and very respectable.

    I agree with Douglas below. This guy repeatedly talks about how unattractive the car is!! While I understand it's a matter of opinion, I totally disagree!! It's amazing and the rare color combo makes it very special. Much more so than a red car with a black interior....like there isn't already enough of those out there!! Lol. Just about guaranteed that the owner of this has a one of a kind car!! Oh, and isn't it called a rear spoiler, not a "wing"?? Also the interior color is "Neutral" not "Natural".....geez!!!

    My thoughts are the same as you basically at least appearance-wise but that car is about as exciting as a 1980s Chevy Chevette LOL just kidding it's more exciting than that but it is definitely the most Bland Gen 2 Camaro that was probably ever created and I'm speaking from owning three different Gen 2 Camaros but you know I do get it I mean I'm sure people have been watching these videos are aware the varnish collection isn't just to have I don't know let's say a 1970 Chevelle SS no no it needs to be LS6 and it needs to have rare options and that car is rare it being exciting or not I can't help but to think what kind of man would have special order that car and I'm thinking had to be some type of mathematician scientist or something of the sort
