  • 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 : Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode 304
This 1970 Chevrolet Camaro not only has the look, it’s a highly original car, right down to the paint and low mileage on the odometer.
That was an interesting quote, considering it was said back in 1970, a mere 3 years after the first 1967 Z/28s rolled off the line. The 1970 ½ Camaro was a new design, now a bit longer than the first generation Camaro, and the automotive press was kind to it for sure. The ‘67 through ‘69 cars were hard to beat, but this ‘70 ½ car has a lot going for it.
The LT1 engine recipe sounds similar to what a hot rodder would build at a race shop… 11:1 compression ratio, solid mechanical camshaft, oversized valves, an aluminum intake manifold fed by a 780 CFM Holley carb, all atop a 4-bolt block made this a true small-block rockin’ machine. It was good for 360 HP and 380 lb. ft. of torque, just a few HP shy of the big block 396 of the day. A Hurst-shifted 4-speed was standard, but the LT-1 made enough torque that Chevy thought it would be OK to offer a Turbo 400 automatic, a first for the Z/28.
Z/28s stayed close to their Trans Am racing heritage, with suspension upgrades including an oversized 1” front sway bar, stiffer front coil springs and heavy duty rear leaf springs. Matching tuned shock absorbers kept everything under control. Other Z-gear included 15” wheels and tires, as was a quick ratio power steering box. Positraction hooked the wheels together while the 4.11 gears spun themselves silly.
This hugger orange Z is showing just over 22,000 miles on the clock, and it is wearing it’s original Hugger Orange paint with black stripes and a black vinyl top. The sleek exterior of the new Camaro is racy and tight, with the low-sloping rear glass and no rear quarter windows. We dig the short rear spoiler on the car. This one is not an RS car, so it has no split bumper and nose extension, but it still looks great. We also really like how the hood stripes point towards the open mouth grille.
A Chevy Camaro ad claimed the Z/28 “separated the men from the toys”, by which they meant this wasn’t just an appearance package. We’re pretty sure there are plenty of women who would have just as much fun in this car, too.
The interior of the new Z/28 was for more cockpit-like than the ‘69 cars, and the high-backed buckets have a cool checkered pattern in the seat covers. A simulated burlwood dash displays small fuel, amps, temp, and a time gauge with a 150 MPH speedo and 8000 RPM tach front and center. An AM radio sits below the heater and vent controls, Z/28s could not be ordered with air conditioning. The full console wears more burl trim, and houses a chrome-balled Hurst shifter that is sure to get mighty hot on sunny days.
The Brothers Collection is always seeking out sharp examples of great Muscle Cars, and we think this 22,000 mile unrestored Z is a great example. Subscribing to our channel updates you right when the next episode hits the streets, so be sure to push the button and set yourself up. Thanks for watching, see you on the next lap of Muscle Car Of The Week!

yeah, when the video said R&T had this car @ 14.20 in the quarter it didnt make sense to me; 360 h/p, with 4.11 gears, 4 spd, and all it could muster was a 14.20??? The car couldnt have weighed more than 3500 or so. A car with numbers like that has GOT to be in the 13's.......

Although I love the 67-69 Z28's, the 70 1/2 is the best Z28 ever made in my opinion. I love the aggressive styling of the 70 1/2 Z28 and the 1970 version of the Chevy LT1 350 is maybe the baddest small block of the entire muscle car era. And to top it off they are maybe the best handling muscle car ever built along with the 70 1/2 Pontiac Trans Am. I'm a Mopar guy but Ford, GM, and even American Motors were all building some Bad Ass machines back in those days.

The 2nd Gen Camaros were a love hate thing for many. For me, I loved the new look. First time I saw one was when my older brother was going to Chevrolet dealerships looking for a new 1970 LS6 Chevelle. When I saw the 70 1/2 Z28 Camaro sitting in the show room I really liked the new aggressive styling and slightly longer wheelbase. What was really great was the LT1 350 under the hood. My brother never found the LS6 Chevelle because they were already sold out and no more were going to be made in the 1970 model year. It was July of 1970 when my brother settled on a cranberry red with black interior LS5 Chevelle. It had a four speed and bucket seats with a console. No strips and it didn't have cowl induction either. It was a strikingly beautiful car. His plans were to buy a LS6 crate engine the next year, but his beautiful Chevelle was stolen in the GM Truck & Bus parking lot while he was working. He was so hart broken when he come to understand his car was stollen. I worked at the Truck & Bus plant when I turned 18 and cars were stollen out of the parking lots quite often. Little did we know at the time 1970 would be the last of the high compression factory performance engines for decades to come. To end this comment on a high note. My brother replaced his LS5 Chevelle the next year with a used 1970 Black with white stripes SS Chevelle with a blue printed and balanced 472 big block. It had 13 to 1 compression, open chambered heads, long tube racing headers, roller cam, dual point distributor, electric fuel pump and a large single Holley carburetor with a 4:88 possie traction rear end. With the single Holley and slicks it ran low 11:40's consistently at Michigan, Lapeer drag way. Oh yes, I forgot to mention it was a beefed up 400 automatic transmissions. Cursing Woodward Ave on warm summer nights in that car are memories I will never forget. The closest race my brother had was a 1970 Baldwin Motion 454 Camaro. When that Chevelle hit second gear the engine had so much torque it was incredible. That engine in a lighter car like a 70 1/2 SS Camaro would have even more awesome. Love the 2nd gen Camaros. Thanks for sharing the original 70 1/2 Z28 Camaro. It is a true and magnificent time capsule.

I owned a 1970 SS 396 (402 375 HP) L-78 numbers matching with Muncie M-21 close ratio 4 speed and optional 4:10 rear 12 bolt Posi. It had headers on it. If guy bellow's friend ran 13.60's @ 104 MPH with Z-28, my L-78 probably ran a few tenths faster. I never took it to the track, but on the highway I could past cars with ease. My current Camaro is the other BB 1970 SS 396 (402 350 HP) L-34 with TH 400 and 3:31 12 bolt Posi rear and headers and true dual exhaust (two small Mufflers (not transverse muffler) It is very fast too. And it is numbers matching.

This car's styling was ahead of its time in 1970. Mopar was just getting around to mimicking the first generation Camaro in '70 with the Cuda - which leaned heavily on its styling from the first gen Camaro. While Ford's Mustang in '70 was following its trend to increase overall size of the Mustang, which started in '67 and by 1973 it was so huge that Ford had to reinvent it with the Mustang 2 - nuff said on that car. Yep the 70 Camaro was good and mimicked cars like Ferrari more so than anything on this side of the Atlantic. I still prefer the 67 or 68 Camaro over the 70, but it's so close as to almost be a tie. Chevy really had things going in 1970, perhaps their best year ever. Thanks Kevin for video and its subject, the awesome 70=1/2 Z/28 - better late than never to throw in a comment and like.

We always had GM cars and when the 70 1/2 Camaro came out, pop bought one but it wasn't the Z28, it was the base car with gold paint, a 307, and baby moon hubcaps.... which my dad said reminded him of Ferrari wheel covers. It still ticks me off. For a few dollars more, we could have had a Z28. Ugh.

It was repainted by the local body guy (that also had a plethora of Turbo Buicks and Tri-5's at the time) in this crisp 'Metallic Rootbeer' with metal flake silver stripes to keep it close to how it was born. The last I saw that car it was sitting on widened Rallyes and it got offered to me for 6 grand. Still kicking myself for not selling my bikes and keeping that forever. I think they made somewhere around 2,000 of them that year, but this one was the Goldielocks car of 2nd gens for me even though I know what a SD-455 T/A is. Fiddlesticks

Throughout the history of the camaro, the z-28 was a package that was attainable for the common man. They were pretty common too. Then chevrolet reintroduced the 5th gen camaro and slowly got around to introducing the z-28 but their z-28 concept was a halo car - well outside the price range of the common man. A base corvette was cheaper than a z-28. It was a stupid move on chevrolet's part.

I would gladly take the 1970 over any current F Body. My first car was a red 1976 Camaro. It had holes in the body big enough to put your foot through. That being said the interior was somehow perfect, It had a 305 with these HUGE spacer plates between the carb and intake. The car was actually pretty quick. The outward visibility was PERFECT. I could see all four corners of the car. I miss it.

    Hi Kevin,
You definitely hit the nail on the head, the 1970 & half Z28 are the meanest, tuffiest, bad ass Camaro going. They look aggressive, go hard & such a beautiful body with the curved back window.
Those LT1 350 CI supposedly were one mean screaming engine. All round one nice pony car.
Prefer an RS with the split bumper

Really tough choice for me between a 69 Z28 or a 70 1/2 Z28. I love that little 302 small block and the styling of the 69. That 302 engine sounded awesome with that chambered exhaust system they had and the 302 made waaay more horsepower than it was rated at. But the LT1 350 in the 70 1/2 Z28 was maybe the meanest small block of the muscle car era and the handling of the second gen Z28 is excellent so I'd probably have to go with the 70 1/2. I'm a Mopar guy but I love classic muscle cars regardless of the manufacturer

Z28’s were & are all about performance in the lightest weight version of Camaro, hence the 302 DZ motor was ideal at the time but the turn of the 70’s brought the LT1, which was also a small block that weighed the same but actually had more lbs of torque than cubic inches. The DZ, while higher revving for the day, actually lacked low-end torque. Yes, the 350 would’ve been too much displacement for TransAm rules, but the LT1 really was the best of both worlds (lbs/hp).

I have built both a DZ302 and a 70 LT1 for my 66 nova. I haven’t had a chance to install the latter, but I assume the LT1 will outperform the DZ. I would have to imagine the 70 Z28 was probably a much faster car than the 67-9 Z28, unless the 70 weighed much more than the first gen.

Really nice car, and a great video; nowadays, they would call a '70 1/2 car a '71 or '72 model :). Never really liked a vinyl top on a sporty car, and can't understand why they thought fake-wood dash and door trim looked good on a hot car like this. Guess people's opinions were different back then; I can't remember what I thought about it at the time.
