- This is raw video from the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) event Gulf Wars XXII, 2013 which is held annually in Lumberton, Mississippi. Please note that some of the video contains audio and some doesn't. Later, I'll edit it down a bit and add music. Like stated, it's just raw video but it does give a good representation of life in camp during the event leading up to the war. Everyone (including myself) had a great time. I went there to simply cover/video a news story for WDAM TV and now find myself as member (it was that good). I hope this upload does the event justice. Please note that in parts of the video, there are some good interviews with some of the participants describing part of the science and arts which are part of the event as well. Very informative. The battle scenes are towards the end of the video but taken as a whole, it's a good representation of a small slice of what takes place at Gulf Wars.I'd like to thank the SCA, Gleann Abhann and everyone we met for being so kind and allowing us to visit. Also thanks to Mercer Morrison and David McRaney for keeping me from harm. Cheers!

This is "Gulf Wars" held in Lumberton, Mississippi during Spring Break every year (March). I believe you have to be 18 to fight in armored combat but there are other events that you can participate in such as archery, ax throwing, etc. It's all for honor and fellowship. I don't believe you have to be a member but it helps. These events are part of The Society for Creative Anachronism. CZcams won't let me put links but do a Google search for the SCA and Gulf Wars. Thanks for watching my video.
It's so frustrating trying to explain the SCA to people who can only imagine that it's like the goofiness of LARP or Dungeon's & Dragons. Thanks for putting this out there for others to see, even if it's primarily just going to be viewed by those of us who are already a part of it.
“They won’t let me fight naked here”
bummer
Keep coming back to this...that Roman kitchen at 8:27 is legitimately badass.
We just held a huge Tourney in France, we have members all around the world with 19 Kingdoms and counting. It might see funny that a person from some southern state in the US, shares the same passion for history that someone in Japan or Spain would have but Drachenwald is in the the Kingdom of Europe, and well they to have the dream!
Seeing as America didn't have a period of Medievalism.. We're fixing that by living it out today!~
I used to go to these events with my family. My dad started construction working, though, so we don't really go anymore. They were fun, though, and my dad knows a lot of people who go to the SCA events.
They really are great family events to attend. Since recording this video, I've joined the SCA along with my son and my brother, and have been back for the past three years, building great memories together. I'm glad they bring back fond memories for you as well.
Yea!!!! Papa Thunder!!! He is so good at teaching the forge. I like to just sit and watch.
I love the SCA. This is excellent.
Thank you for posting the additional footage!!
I've always loved Medieval and Fantasy related stuff, but I'm not going to lie, the movie Role Models is what made me realize stuff like this existed lol.
Only eighteen days away from opening day...I need this to hurry up and get here. Lol
Great overview; this gives a general idea of what a SCA event is all about! Thank-you.
Greetings from An Tir. Quite good stuff you've caught here.
I actually like the raw footage a lot more than the two interviews created from it.
very nice gives a great over view of the whole war and what we do
Greetings from Atenveldt. Thanks for the video
Never see others from Atenveldt! I know this is am old comment but! Atenveldt ftw!
Very interesting vid......thanks for sharing!
i wish to go to gulfwar some day
.
This video is great, it shows perfectly the absolute frentic chaos of the battles, but if there were only some way to show how much fun it is to take a blow from a spear directly to the faceguard lol
Those damned Calontiri and their wall of scutae. 8)
gods I love the sca...
HAHAHA I love that old guy with the cross bow "Oh ya the Romans had that shit" XD
23:38 "HOW'S THAT FEEL?!??! YEA!"
This is fantastic! but a friendly tip I hope you wont take wrong: DECORATE your clothing! many misconceptions are made about the plainness of medieval clothing; it wasn't.
Embroideries, trim, and don't forget accessories too. we had the capacity to and we did make fine clothing back in the middle ages. Not everyone had decorative garb, but even lower artisans had good clothing. I just joined the sca over in Wisconsin, and sadly our group is too small and unorganized(lol)but I will change that ;)
alot of the colors are offputting, there never would have been as much purple or the shades of purple seen here. also, seems like 75 percent of people have on glasses.
SCA is global not just an "American thing" And if anyone takes the time to go to the sites that have been provided, you can probably find a shire, or Barony in your area. Whether or not it is the same or near LARP depends on the LARP you are part of, just like The Ren Faires, all are different. We do not recreate we research and try to bring the best from the past. Without actual death and plagues, we strive to bring a dream to life. But see your yourself! Check us out!
Thanks for Sharing
11OBlitzO11...agreed. Life during that period had to be a major struggle. In a way, its just human nature to romanticize anything that's in our past. The SCA is just a living glimpse honoring those more idyllic moments along with the safest way to replicate battle engagements. Thank you for watching my video and your comments. If you ever get a chance to attend one of our events, look me up...I'm Edward, son of Robert. I'll buy you a tankard if ale (grin). Cheers!
awesome
I love the guy wearing Ye Olde Mirrored Sunglasses while in character
A Knights Tale also had a huge influence on me. Thanks for this video!!!
You are quite welcome. And yes..that is a great movie.
i'd love to go to gulf wars someday, but i'm in NY, soooo... pennsic it is! ;)
Hey if you can't go anywhere else Go to Pennsic! I wish I could, I live in Oregon and I'm poor.
Oh no...how terrible for you....XD One day I'm gonna get to Pennsic.
This is an awesome vid.... but where's the rapier?
very cool
Love seeing that Sable Star #AnsteorraPride
Is it Ansteorra that has chili night? Either way...I look forward to chili night all year long.
Not very medieval of me...but the truth. Lol
@@123youknowme I honestly have no clue lmao. I've only been in the SCA for less than a year and I've never been to Gulf Wars
@@AbbyWhisperWitch I believe it is. It's really good chili.
You should try to make it this coming March. You won't be disappointed.
@@123youknowme I'm gonna try lol. Some of us are planning to carpool
I recognize some of these people!!
Nice.
I love this stuff but going there this year doesn't look like its going to happen for me. Maybe next year.
I am working on a video we are bringing to a Demo soon and would like to use some of your footage is possible. We don't have room to actually "demo" much but we have room for a table and tv. May I use some clips from this Gulf Wars XXII video?
Awesome, can't wait to join/participate. Is there some sort of membership fee?
yes but it is minimal, and that is only if you wish to be a sustaining member...many people participate without membership
yes I come from the east and i use a blue card i dont know if they use the same in other kingdoms
Rudolf Rupert
the blue card is standard because it's issued by the Society, and accepted in all kingdoms.
but how much is it to join?
@@julianne2saw $30 for just a basic membership & 45 for a full membership :)
i can't imagine why you'd strip this video of its sound, even if you're planning on adding music later... there's so much interview information here that we're completely missing. is your finished video up yet?
nathan scarabin
I went to this as simply a news story and was shooting what we call as B-roll or cutaway footage. I had never been to this event before and the audio is mostly nat sound (mic on camera). It wasn't intended for public viewing but after I got to the event, I became more intrigued by what I was filming. I was also being rushed along by a media event guide. I tried getting the best of what I shot which was about three hours of video and crunched it down to this. Since this video...I've been to Gulf Wars three times as a participant. It's my most anticipated event of the year...better than Christmas...Lol. But I do not take a camera. I just want to immerse and let my job as a reporter, fade away. Anyway, thanks for watching.
In the kingdom on An tir (oregon ohio washington areas..) you can be 16 with parental permission and be in the Melee masses :D
What time of year do they usually host the Gulf War? I live in the Kingdom of Trimaris so this is probably the most accessible major battle event for me, but I’m curious as to how Wars work in SCA and when they’re hosted
Here's the dates for 2019: March 9, 2019 @ 8:00 am - March 16, 2019 @ 5:00 pm
Come over and check it out..It's in Lumbertson, Mississippi and held at King's Arrow Ranch. You won't regret the trip. I love that folks don't walk around all day in mundane (modern world) clothes with a cell phone stuck in their faces all week. Unless it's to take a quick pic. Lol
I guess u are right. I am thinking too critically.
Yay for Scotland, Aberdeenshire and the Caledonians!
Scotland Forever!
how do you acknowledge if you died? do you just beat on each other till one dude gives up?
it's an honor system. If you get hit in the back of the head or a certain amount of blows in vital areas or you get knocked down you are obliged to walk back to the home flag and counted as dead. However, there are judges in the ranks who will tap you out if you are less than honorable. Lol
Audio tearing and static at 24:50...SLENDERMAN?!
Where is this at? What do i need to join the battles? Do you have to be +18?
How many people attend this event, on average? I can't seem to find information on attendance at the Gulf Wars anywhere.
at least 10,000
Sean Kistler For Gulf Wars or Pennsic?
For gulf I guesstimate 10000 and for pensic about 30000
Sean Kistler Pennsic War 40 had 11,550. 45 had 10,368.
So they can keep permanent structures down there at Gulf Wars?
+fritha grimmsdottir Yes. Some encampments/households have actually bought the land they camp on and have built or are building permanent structures.
Ralph Morris Do you know if that’s for all kingdoms participating in the Gulf Wars? Or just a few?
If it’s only some, which ones?
LARPS roll dice and we really hit each other. Nothing wrong with it, but it dose fell insulting when people get them confused. Like how people get angry about getting DC and Marvel. (only that's even more piety of an issue.)
There is just something funny about Americans with southern accents representing medieval persons. (I guess you could apply the same feeling to any American)
I fight Rapier in the SCA, and we bitch about the heat and discomfort of a few layers of linen or whatever, on a hot day. I can't imagine what you heavy combat fighters endure. The things we do for the love of our hobbies, LOL.
Hahaha
Me the Trimarian King in blue and white at 18:42-50 19:21
That was my first year...it's so much fun. I've yet to miss a year since then.
I don't think that is entirely accurate as I am sure people living during those times didn't think it was a walk in the park. But I agree most Americans have the same ancestors as those who did live in that time so they are just as ... justified in reliving the time.
Hopefully next Gulf War, I'll find out...woot.
