summary: mary (mckenna grace) is a seven year old math genius who lives with her uncle frank (chris evans) because her mom commit suicide after she was born. frank sends mary to elementary school in hopes that she can live a normal life. the principal tells frank to send mary to a private school and he says no, causing the principal to contact mary’s grandma evelyn, who demands mary be tutored in and study math like her mom did. frank tells evelyn his sister would want her to live a normal life. evelyn sues frank for custody of mary and it is revealed evelyn isolated her daughter (mary’s mother) causing her to be suicidal. it is decided mary will go into foster care and attend private school while having occasional visits with frank. mary’s foster family puts her cat up for adoption because of allergy issues, leading frank to discover evelyn had been monitoring mary’s education as she lives with the foster family as well. frank goes to retrieve mary and it is revealed he has been instructed to hide his sister (mary’s mom)’s research from their mother out of hatred for evelyn. frank strikes a deal saying evelyn can publish the research if he gets mary back. the movie ends with mary attending her old school and participating in girl scouts while also taking college courses. i love this movie so much since mckenna grace is such a brilliant actress even when she was so young.

Just so you know that kid is not prodigy... She was taught a secret military math's trick by the uncle just like he learned it at age 6....thats why he mostly didn't want others to find that trick...
Any kid even as a toddler can know swear words, she a gifted genius. She just meant like she doesn't know many grown adults like how can she know the person
The child is 7 yet does not recognise their grandmother. The grandmother presented an expensive gift. She is dressed too well in comparison to the others. She knows that the child is a mathematical genius but does not know what maths she does. She is keeping distance and holds herself tightly. The man, presumably father, I've seen uncle thrown around, sits quietly watching, reminds the child of manners but his body language is wary and untrusting, limits contact with child. This tells me that this is grandmothers first vist and contact, despite the child being 7. Grandmother places a lot of value on status and/or mathematics and her interaction is based off that. Caregiver being untrusting means that grandmother hasn't got a good track record, this tells me that dad/uncle is worried that grandmother shows up suddenly now after the child shows genius because she might a) use the child, b) pressure the child into academics and effectively end her childhood or c) try to get them emotionally attached only to disappear
Grandmother isn't considerate, she's obsessed with math and equations. The girls mother, the uncles sister, committed suicide due to her mother to her mother making her entire life about one math equation. "Grandmother" tried to take the child because her uncle/dad didn't allow her to treat her granddaughter like her daughter. The only way he got her to back away was to give her the math equation his sister finished and let to her ending her own life.
I haven't seen this movie but I can tell that the grandmother wants something from that child and that's why she brings expensive gifts to try to buy her
Yeah pretty much. To simplify the story. The guy wants the kid to be a normal kid. The grandma wants the kid to pursue high level mathematics. In the end they come to a good solution. There is a lot more to the story. Great movie
I only recognised the child actor as Paige from young sheldon last time i came across this clip Today i am realising thats Steve Rogers from mcu , chris evans
I know this exact story but its so disgusting to see parents downplay childrens abilities because they think “its for their good”. And not only that, sometimes its literally jealousy. Plese, if you have a genius kid, inform me hem about it, and let THEM decide if they want to progress further. Some minds of geniuses are not build to be such
