- There's been a bevy of discussion lately on "elevated" horror (thanks to Scream 2022). Some don't like the term, but if anything, it's raised more awareness for certain films. So let's count down my Top 10 ELEVATED Horror Movies. #ElevatedHorror

Oh, good news. I will be setting up a support hotline for those that are offended by the term “elevated horror”. Hang in there.
Can I get that number?
You're trying too hard.
@@pamfisher5976 Didn’t take much effort at all honestly.
You should do top 10 straight to DVD horror movies.
Make the next top 10, horror movies with famous elevator scenes.....................
Blackcoats Daughter is criminally underrated
Easily one of my favorites in last decade. A masterpiece!
Midsommar would be high on my list. But yeah man, great list!
Rosemary's Baby is the only horror movie that gave me a nightmare. A true masterpiece. As is The Shining. Hereditary is the best horror film since 2000 IMO. I still can't believe Toni Collette wasn't nominated for an Oscar for that movie.
You should do a top 10 why did that person have to die. I think it'd be cool to see all the communities favorite characters that ended up dying but wish they hadn't list
7:35 You're spot on about the Barry Keoghan/Paul Dano comparison. Idk how to explain it other than that they're both incredible actors but it almost looks effortless and their performances always feel really raw as opposed to other actors where sometimes you can kinda see them thinking through the performance, if that makes any sense. Keoghan and Dano just come off as very natural.
I think Elevated Horror is a mainstream term for Arthouse Horror or Art Horror but with some key differences in both.
What's I do think of what Elevated Horror is?
1. It usually aims at broader audience bracket.
2. The genres of Arthouse and Drama but it can't be equal together. It has to be leaning towards more of one or the other. Also, can't be 100% towards one of the genres. Here are 2 examples: The Witch is more of a Drama Horror than a Arthouse Horror. Saint Maud is more of a Arthouse Horror than a Drama Horror.
3. It has dramatic elements for the Psychological Horror aspect without relying on a lot of blood and gore. (This one may change as the genre is getting bigger).
4. Having overarching themes for deep layers and multiple meanings for the viewer.
5. It has to be 2015 and onwards. (I think there are exceptions to the rule for the other movies before 2015.)
I didn't like The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Saint Maud, and The Shining. I liked the Witch but the very ending was unbalanced as in being ridiculous but I get why it is there.
I wish was loving this genre because I love some arthouse, drama, and psychology horror films. I'm not giving up on it but it makes me sad that I don't love it. ☹️
Suspiria remake was brilliant! Great list as always, please consider doing top 10 most disturbing/unsettling scenes in horror. Thank you for the content.
Yes! I love Suspiria '18, an amazing, immersive experience!
Another great video, my top 5 elevated horror would be
1. Get Out
2. Candyman (1992)
3. The Shining
4. Midsommar
5. The Lighthouse
‘The Shining’, one of the best horror films ever made and also one of my most favorites indeed.
I'd like to mention The Babadook too, I freakimg love that movie.
Also, for me personally, The Shining is like 10 steps ahead of anything else that classifies as "elevated horror"
Yeah, The Babadook is a great film. One of my favourites.
Suspiria 2018 is such an underappreciated film. It's an absolute treasure trove of nuance and subtext - layer after beautiful layer of it. Thanks for at least mentioning this film, and considering it - it's due some praise.
I've not yet seen most of the newer ones on here. I'm really looking forward to seeing It Follows. That's been on my to-watch list for a while.
It Follows is awesome. Check it out😀
Yes check it out! It’s unexpectedly creepy if you watch it at night alone. Haven’t had a movie creep me out like that since
Horror movies that get called elevated horror movies, I just call them horror movies because that is what they are! Just Horror movies!
So do you just call slasher movies horror movies too? What about paranormal, or creature features?
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Just horror movies
This is such a great list Lee!! I haven’t seen one or two of these movies!! You always introduce to me, some amazing stuff😊
Thank you Gabe!
Lee, watched The Lodge the other night and I highly recommend it. It's dark, upsetting at times and tense. The snowy atmosphere only adds to the suspense.
Hell yeah! Thanks for using my suggestion Lee 🖤 I loved The Lodge and you had an awesome #1 choice. I somehow didn’t even think of that one!! Also, “sir…. I got this” LMAO 😭 amazing video as always!!!!
Thank you for the amazing suggestion Vic!! Really enjoyed this one. 👏❤️
Would love a Top Ten Almost Final Girls (the ones you wished would’ve survived)
I’ve been getting a few request for this one. Might make it happen.
Years ago, a few movies on this list would have been referred to as "arthouse horror".
yep names for genres change with the generation
Absolutely loved all the movies on your list. Someone should list as many elevated horror movies as possible - I am running out of movies to watch!
Thank you Andrew!
Great list, really excellent choices. I've seen all of them except Susperia. I liked Us a lot, but definitely realize the plot is majorly flawed. Still, Lupita's performance is jaw dropping. I would add Midsommar, Babadook, and Let Me In to this list. Love your shirt.
Yesss it follows. I’m looking at my it follows poster right now. I love that movie.
I love it follows! I consider it my gateway movie to other elevated horror.
Here's a more interesting video idea, top 10 elevator horror movies.
Devil would have to be in that list lol
I liked It Follows the first time I saw it. I loved that you weren’t sure what time it was taking place. The kids weren’t on there phones. It was a breathe of fresh air for me.
I've only seen a few of these movies but of the ones I have I gotta say The Shining is one of my favorites. Never understood why Shelly Duval got crapped on for her performance. She was amazing. Especially after hearing the crop Kubrick put her through. Love the whole movie from beginning to end. As usual your videos hit it out of the park again. Great job man.
Kubrick wasn't known as a actor's director and a few of his movies had very uneven performances. Along with many others I thought the Shining suffered from some cartoonish acting mainly from Nicholson. A shame cause it was jarring to the atmosphere of the movie. I still think that 2001, Paths of Glory and Clockwork Orange are his best movies. Duvall was mostly fine, any fault with her performance was in the script. Shame her life and career fell apart later on with health issues.
Awesome video, man!
Great top 10 list. My top 10 are
1. The Shining
2. Rosemary's Baby
3. Get Out
4. Hereditary
5. It Follows
6. The Babadook
7. The Witch
8. The Killing Of A Sacred Deer
9. Midsommar
10. The Lighthouse
Fantastic list man!
I rewatched Rosemary's Baby while pregnant. It hit so much deeper.
Great list. Lots of great movies on there. To answer your question, I enjoyed It Follows the first time, but 2nd time it somehow got better and became one of my all time faves.
Nice!
Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ became one of the best movies in 2019.
Fun fact: The director of The Blackcoat's Daughter is Osgood Perkins (who was David in Legally Blonde), son of Anthony Perkins (Psycho).
Wow interesting! Thank you for sharing.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews You’re welcome 😊
Great video I got a suggestion 10 best weapons in horror like Michael's butcher knife or Jason's machete
Hi, Lee. This was a great video. I love 'elevated' horror movies. Some fantastic titles on this list. Have u seen the Icelandic film 'Lamb' with Noomi Rapace ? And that's a frickin awesome t-shirt, dude. Keep the faith, brother ... 🤘
No but I love Noomi. I've been meaning to check it out.
Here's another list idea, if it hasn't been said already. Top 10 subversive horror movies.
This is the reason I love horror, you have the silly popcorn horror, comedy horror and psychological deep horror movies.
Theres one that I dont "deep" but it's a very ambitious horror is Neon Demon. Also anti christ and martyrs shakes me to the core.
You deserve many more subs dumdrums, you have some great thoughts on these films.
Edit: I'm surprised you didnt put the exorcist in the list. It's a very deep disturbing and IMO the best depiction of the darker side of faith and religion. The loss of innocence and the fear of losing faith or even the concrete answer that there is a God, there is the devil and what powers they have over us.
Exactly Kristine.
Would definitely put The Blackcoat's Daughter in the top 10. Stunning piece of work. Interesting you compare Barry Keoghan to Paul Dano as they're both in The Batman.
Rebecca Hall & Toni Colette are seriously good actresses!
Love your top 3, Lee! The VVitch is probably my number one. Great list overall. And I couldn't agree more about Shelley Duvall's performance. She won a Razzy for worst actress that year which I think is so unfair - I thought she did a great job
That’s shocking that she won a Razzie too. That poor woman!
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews I know! Being traumatized on set only to be crowned worst actress...poor thing 😔
Rosemary's Baby and The Shining are undisputed masterpieces; elevated horror before it was a trend.
I'm still on the fence with Hereditary, as I was definitely shocked by certain scenes, but I recall struggling to be invested during my initial watch. The Witch was a tremendous letdown for my wife and I. Too plodding and depressing. I'll probably watch both again, knowing now what I'm going into.
I have yet to see St. Maud, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Night House, and Black Coat's Daughter, but I'm excited for them.
Quick question Lee, is it possible to consider moves like the the Conjuring, Insidious, Midsommar etc… elevated horror movies? And if so where would you put them in your ranking?
Midsommar for sure. The conjuring and insidious or just straight up possession movies. At least that’s my take.
I love it follows, Us, hereditary, the shining and Rosemary's baby.
Mike Flanagan's 'Haunting of Hill House' is my favourite 'elevated horror'. Sure, it's a tv series, but the acting, the script, the directing; incredible. It made me, a 32 year old horror fanatic raised on the Exorcist & the like afraid of the dark for weeks despite it not being overtly scary. That's owed partly to Flanagan having ghosts hidden in the background of many shots to depict how the house was always watching the family. Creepy as.
Yeah that was a solid show for sure.
Someone do a top 10 horror movie weapons
Kind of surprised The Exorcist didn't make the cut. I only just saw The Night House two night ago and loved it. The way the director used the spaces within the house to convey the shape of the demon was just amazing. I didn't call the twist in Us ahead of time, but I expect many did because some idiot showed part of the reveal in the trailer, which I really wish they'd stop doing.
I seriously thought about including The Exorcist, but it is more of a traditional possession movie. It just happens to be the best.
Great list (I haven't watch some of them but I'll try to). The only thing I would've ranked Hereditary higher (maybe number 1), Anyways The Witch and It Follows are great movies also
Cool list. My favorite is Perfect blue from 1997.
The next top 10 you should do is top 10 movies that needs a 4k release. There is a site where you can see what movies that are released in 4k. And you will be shocked how many great classics and beloved movies that are not in 4k like the original Terminator.
First time I've ever heard Rosemary's Baby described as a "warm blanket". I love the movie, and even more the novel, both are pretty much perfect, just never thought of it as a warm blanket, and man, I love me a nice warm blanket, so yeah, now I absolutely get it, thanks!
Seeing the blu ray of possession in the background made me thing it was in the list 😂 amazing film that is defently in my top 10
Best horror movie with an elevator: DEVIL.
James I shit you not, I’ve seen this joke about 50 times now.
Awesome list! Next top grindhouse horror 🤣🤣 jk kinda lol keep it up lee
I agree with your list except for The Night House and Us. In those spots I would put The Empty Man and some Ti West movie
What you think about categorizing Funny Games (both the German original and the American remake) and Beyond the Black Rainbow into this genre?
They fit perfectly.
I love that you put older movies in it; cuz, yeah, 'elevated horror' is not new!
Exactly!
It Follows was a nice surprise, very different. Liked both Suspiria movies but the later version was much better than I expected. Liked Get Out much more than Us.
One of THE BEST Jump scares I have ever seen is in a small movie I loved called "After Midnight "
A movie that isnt horror but could be is Flowers in the Attic. It was always labeled horror at my movie store back in the day
(BrettMan) Great video and Top 10 Choices. I go with the VVitch as my Number 1
We still need that It Follows Watch Party 😂
Yes we do!
Would you open the floodgates of an Elevated horror topic discussion on your next DD live or have you said your piece? I think it would be an interesting companion to the “Do I have bad taste in films” discussion.
Way ahead of you brother.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Awesome.
I like elevated horror if it's not too pretentious and doesn't feels like it full of itself
Not crazy about the term "elevated".... rich, well shot, unique storylines, believable characters, a vision realized thru tension, mis-direction, brutality or "creep factor" .... just GOOD HORROR. Couldn't agree more about many of your picks, Lee! It Follows/The Witch/Hereditary/ The original Suspiria/Killing Of A Sacred Deer.... some of my favs!!!
Great top ten DD!
My top ten that I consider elevated in horror:
1. Hereditary
2018 (every time I watch this I'm bothered by it)
2. The Appointment 1981 (this movie makes me soo uncomfortable)
3. Night of the Devils 1972 (seeking help, memory lost, one of the sadness twists ever)
4. A Cold Night’s Death 1973 (feeling trapped and dread, the atmosphere kills me)
5. Who Can Kill a Child? 1976 (all about dilemma)
6. Fever Dream 2021 (so many subject matters, it is done well and so effected)
7. The Lodge
2019 (build up and out come)
8. Sinister
psychological
Outstanding list!
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Thank you so much.
I wouldn't necessarily say I enjoy "It Follows" from a general movie-watching viewpoint, but I have no problem saying it's one of the scariest movies I've seen. I respect it for that.
If you can count "Autopsy of Jane Doe" as elevated, then that would be my top choice.
"PUT THE F............N LOTION IN THE BASKET!!!".........Nothing to do with the list, I just wanted to say it.
I own It Follows. I just couldn’t get into it. Felt like I was just waiting for something to happen and it didn’t. I don’t hate on anyone who likes or dislikes. I wanted to like it.
Im kind of shocked for what you said about elevated horror and its origin in Scream 5. I read an article about this genre released in 2019, three years before this movie was released.
Oh interesting Melissa. I'd like to check out that article.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Sure! Hmm, do you read in Spanish? I can send it to you.
The term elevated horror was literally invented for The VVitch which is the best horror film the last decade bar none. Scream is not even elevated horror, it's just self-aware.
Your choices are all solid but how on earth is Possessor an honorable mention? Hated US but its elevated horror no doubt. I'll add a few others IMO:
- The Babadook
- A Dark Song
- Triangle
- The Empty Man
- Lifechanger
- The Lighthouse
- Kill List
- Oculus
- Excision
- Hunter Hunter
There were a lot of good suggestions.
It's kind of weird to have 2 names for one genre whether you want to go with the original term of psychological horror or the new gen term of elevated horror, I'm sure was we get a new slasher boom there going to be a new term for slasher movies as well
You mean like possession and demonic? Of slasher and splatter? Creature features and monster movies? Yeah weird right?
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews OK fair enough there is a more common term and less common term for most genres
Love it bud!
Starry Eyes ⚡️🤟⚡️
I almost put Starry Eyes on here. Love that one.
You don't have to use it but top 10 animated horror movies.
These are all great films and all of them are among my favorites. Rebecca Hall is a Goddess as is Toni Colette. The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, The VVITCH, Hereditary, Suspiria and It Follows are all some of my favorite films of all time.
Man I love Rebecca Hall.
Danny Lloyd also deserves credit for the shinning for being the creepy kid and actually being creepy! ( Those face expressions) 😨
i dont like the terms since movies like these "elevated" horror are directly influenced by older horror movies that already had this slow burn quality to it like the exorcist, rosemary baby, repulsion, etc most of modern horror are influenced by 80s most comedic fast horror and the elevated horror are influenced by 60s and 70s horror flicks. but also the term was created to somehow protect the reputation of horror because i feel there was starting to be almost a generic horror movie every week that wasnt very good.
Not sure if it's pure horror but I really love Signs.
💓 Rosemary's Baby - Saw it on the BIG SCREEN,at a cult classic movie night,a few years ago.
Nice!
I wish you and Cody and whoever else would squash whatever beef y'all have put it in the past and bring back the scream streams
Never going to happen. It’s in the past. Move on.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews I dont know exactly what happened. Didnt know it was that serious. My bad
Cody sucks I feel he watches movies like a sponge but doesn't take time to sit and appreciate the film. Regardless of it not being great. Cody is the worst person to go to for a review imo. Your doing just fine 2 years later and I'm still on your page
lol clearly that manager didn’t know he was talking too when he warned you against watching Possessor
Elevated horror isn’t usually my thing but I will watch them once in awhile
Nice top 10 Mr. Lee
It was such a weird experience Polly. 🤣
Great list, I love a majority of these huge mentioned except for the lodge 😭 I don’t know what it is I’m just not a big fan of that movie.
One great movie is Identity which is soooo underrated.
I think elevated horror is like those slow burn movies when the 3rd act increase the tension
I fell asleep watching It Follows, I was tired and the first act bored me but that was years ago and I do want to give it another chance. Loved US. Keep meaning to get to Blackcoat
AMAZING
Devil is the best "elevated" horror movie. Change my mind.. ☕
I’m just too tired to even try.
If I cared I would suggest "Self-aware" might work for a name too to replace elevated but I am not butt hurt over it
There are so many die hard fans of Halloween or Elm Street who dislike It Follows, and i DON'T GET IT.
It's a modern, ambitious and clever take on these two movies, and it's A W E S O M E!
People also comment on it's final act, that it's weak and make no sense logic wise.
First of all no one knows the rules or logic behind this curse/demon/whatever.
Secondary watch the final act of Elm Street once again, and tell me if Jat and the gang didn't try to fight back ina same manner :)
Great list in general, I like and love all mentioned movies :)
Agreed. And there are a lot of similarities to Halloween.
I have TRIED to like IT Follows. I just don't get it.
To be completely honest, in my humble opinion, I despise that term. I feel that it is elitist and condescending. I feel that it inherently implies that the horror genre is “less than” other genres by placing a select few examples of the genre as “elevated.”
I don’t find it elitist at all. I just think these films are more experimental. Hence the term. Doesn’t mean they’re necessarily better.
100% agree - it represents the disrespect that the horror genre has always had to deal with through the years by highlighting a few “acceptable” movies even though horror has all kinds of different sub genres attached to it. It’s just another way for critics to talk down to horror fans imo.
Honestly agree you don’t hear of elevated drama or elevated comedy, but when it comes to horror that’s a different story. Maybe I’m. Just reading into it to much, but….I dunno.
Another great one is the (danish ?) Grans.....just awesome. Cronenberg didn't make it ?
Green Room was very wicked & awesome too.
Love "Us", "The Shining" and "It Follows". Never heard of "The Ledge", "The Blackcoats Daughter" or "The Killing Of A Sacred Deer". "Suspiria", don't like giallos. Other 6, just not my thing. Always dug "It Follows".
What is your/the definition of elevated horror exactly?
I explain it at the beginning of the video Wayne.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews I heard that, but just thought it was a bit vague, sorry.
Freaking Shining,A Classic,Jaws,The Thing,Aliens,this is a long freaking list
Is 'elevated' not just a posh term for 'slow burn'? 🤔
Yeah but any genre can be slow burn. Hell, the first Halloween is a slow burn.
Me and my husband did not like It Follows at all but would never get pissed at people who did like it. We'd have a friendly discussion about it like people should do!
Top 10 horror movies for families(not animated)
It follows was a great film I'd give it a 7/10 I can understand either side of the argument but I thought the final act was so lame and kinda soured a tiny bit how great the rest of the film was
Night watch review 😎
