I would have thought the shinning would be the number one but I did watch the exorsist and that's what afterwords but I had high hopes that Texas chainsaw would be number one but as they say never get you hopes up but my favorite scene from Halloween is little Micheal standing there with the camera zooming out but another one is michael admireing his work of killing bob mostly michael myers is my favorite slasher because it is terrifying to see him stalk Laurie and the way he kills is another one but along side from that drum Dum what is your favorite slasher?

Some of my scariest movies to watch is the thing, Halloween, black Christmas, the fog, and the silence of the lambs

All Hallows Eve was definitely one of the movies that really scaried me, Art the clown at the final act of the movie where your watching the babysitter finish the movie such a well put together and effective scene
Black Christmas is my go-to. Those phone calls still send chills up my spine, and the ending is terrifying. Great list!
Black Christmas is one of my all time favorite films, and I can't believe I forgot to put it on here haha.

Collin Murr : Those phone calls are the creepiest, scary things in that movie and that flick is loaded with scares.

i remembered enjoying the 2006 remake though but the original is a classic but yeah the ending is terrifying.
Exorcist 3. Haven't seen it in a while but I remember it had a really unsettling atmosphere throughout. Also has one of the best jump scares ever in a horror film
My date screamed at that jump scene with such genuine terror that the rest of the theater audience broke out into laughter. That was 30 years ago and I still laugh about it.😂
My dad took my mom on a date to that movie and said after he dripper her off, checked the back seat then sped home! Hahaha
And this is not per-say a scary movie, but the scene in Salem's Lot where the kid is floating in the air and scratching at the window is the ultimate "I can't get that visual out of mind" creepfest.
I still need to give Salem's Lot a watch.

My Grandpa showed me Salem’s Lot when I was 4 and this scene traumatized me. Would not sleep facing a window my entire childhood haha. Still gives me the creeps.

The Thing(1982) is one of my favorite movies of all time
Sinister is my #1 scariest movie. The ending is flawed, but the rest of the movie just creates this atmospheric dread that terrifies me. And the soundtrack chills me to my bone
Yeah, I think Sinister is still the scariest movie I’ve ever seen, but there’s so many others. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is killer as well, especially for the time it came out.

I saw the original Texas Chainsaw in the theater when I was 16. Even though I’ve seen it now 100 times, that very first viewing in the theater as a young teenager STILL makes my heart pound if I close my eyes and remember it. And I’m 57 now!
Man I can't even imagine seeing that in the theater when it first came out. I have a thing for cultural phenomenons in cinema, and just the climate at the time. It must have been electric!
Well Lee, it came out in 74. I was only 11. But, since there was no video options it just stayed on the theater circuit. When I was 16 in ‘79 it made its way back to Texarkana, my hometown. Yes the Town that Dreaded Sundown🔪, and my brother and I bought tickets to another movie then snuck in because we were under age. Only like 18-20 people in the theater. Still they were getting up and leaving. At the end when Sally is in the truck and Leatherface is swinging the saw....we were the only ones left. And we were scared to walk to the car. That night still haunts me bro! 🤣
Make the Drew Barrymore moment from scream a short film and thats scary as hell

Some scary movies I've seen that stuck with me/disturbed me the most were the original Last House on the Left, Suspiria(both versions), Rosemary's Baby, Cannibal Holocaust, Sinister, Hereditary, Audition, High Tension, and the original Black Christmas. I also think Prince of Darkness and Alice, Sweet Alice are great underrated gems. Also the first 20-25 minutes of the original When a Stranger Calls is very effective.

@You Didn't See Graphite, Because It's Not There so many lists for horror genre had this on their top scariest but I didn't find either scary at ALL . Creepy yes.
Great list, Lee. "The Thing" is really scary, I was terrified because of the scene with the dog transformation. You should watch "Salem's Lot". Reggie Nalder as the vampire Kurt Barlow is scary as hell and it also has some great scenes. Also, "The Omen" with Gregory Peck has scary moments and the great soundtrack.
The Omen (1976) should definitely be listed - terrified me when I first saw it.
"Audition" is my favorite horror movie hands down

That one scene in The Wailing in the cave definitely was scary. And a little lesser known movie called deathdream that movie is probably one of the scariest movie I've ever seen . Also Let's scare Jessica to death was also scary .
Creepshow - Used to me freak me out as a kid, the atmosphere in all 5 stories just gave me the chills, still kinda do but not as much as it used to, but the special effects are just so effective and creepy, the music is just bone-chilling, and just overall a very effective movie and one of the best horror movies of all time.
The Strangers is also one that really freaked me out, just the thought of being tormented at random and not knowing why it is happening is just bone-chilling, also the fact that it’s based on a true story is really horrifying !
You like creepshow you ever watch tales from the darkside. The intro will give you goosebumps

I’m a Christian and movies that deal with demonic spirits and possessions always scare me the most.

The first time I saw Texas Chainsaw, I yelled "oh shit!" so loud when Leatherface popped out of the trees to get Franklin, my dad came in my room to see if I was ok
I had that reaction when leatherface appeared in the remake. The original didn't scary me. I just thought it was disturbing

Great list Lee. You and I are definitely the same age as I found myself going “Yes!” to each selection. A couple from the 70s I loved growing up as well we’re the original Omen and The Amityville Horror.

Your top 5 is pretty much bang on. I'm surprised Jaws is not in the top 10, if considered a horror? That movie had a huge impact on audiences.
Oh my gosh! I’m so excited that you mentioned demons in your honorable mentions. One and two is arguably the best 1 2 punch in horror history in terms of how good they are together.

I was 6 years old & my aunt & uncle took me to see the original Amityville Horror. That "creepy" opening theme still scares the crap out of me.
I saw The Thing at 12 and it remains my favorite movie. I never tire of watching it.
I think Hereditary and It Follows are the first movies worthy of approaching the top 10 in 20+ years.

Loved your list! The only ones I'd add are suspiria, Halloween 4, & the descent. I'd also add autopsy of Jane doe as my sleeper pick cause no one seems to talk about the unbearable tension in that film that sustains the whole runtime.

Nice list there Lee, though I wouldn't put The Blair Witch Project on my list. Since I was one of the lucky ones who saw The Exorcist in the theaters back during the day and yes, people either threw up or ran out of the theaters during the movie. That is why it's my number one horror movie of all time.

Exorcist was special, so much things that was never scene in a movie will definitely have an interesting affect on a person and to experience a revolutionary movie on the big screen had to be special

This a fantastic list. Thank you for including It Follows. The first time I saw that in the theater, I was thinking about it for days after. My only disagreement on the list is The Witch (which put me to sleep rather than scare me) but that's just a personal opinion. Love these lists!!

I use to love swimming in the ocean because of the positive buoyancy. I was swimming up near Monterey Bay in NorCal and I felt the water rise around me and something bump into my leg. I looked around and didn't see anything until a very large fin broke the water about 10 yards from me... and then disappeared beneath the waves. I've NEVER been so scared as I was then. I literally couldn't move. Eventually I returned to shore very slowly and laid on the hot firm sand for quite some time. This is why 'Jaws' is my scariest horror movie of all time.
I agree about Blair Witch. That ending with her screaming, and him standing, staring at the wall makes my hair stand up, chills.
Yessss seeing him in the corner freaked me out and about the teeth thing. It was heart pounding to see them get further lost out there freaking out

It Follows is THE best modern Horror film I’ve seen. It had the early 80s vibe to it that worked so well.
I thought it was boring and weak.
I found it to be very long and drawn-out and not much happened so I would say that it was weak and boring as well. It just didn't have anything happening most of the time and the danger was vague and some people say it's an STD and some people say it's something else but I don't really need an allegory for something that follows you the rest of your life like an STD because sometimes those can be cured and sometimes those can be treated. And it just felt boring.
Nice list Lee, I would really struggle to do a list of films that scared me cause I don’t scare easily. I mean I jump at jump scares and get creeped out now and then but I’ve never really been terrified afterwards where I can’t sleep. The Strangers scared me in that it really creeped me out but when the film ends I’m always OK. My love of horror is more cause I think it’s cool AF.

I would say The Ring, that movie made me feel "gray" inside. There was such a sense of "something is not right about what i'm watching here"...not to mention the scene when the daughter is found in the closet during the otherwise subdued dishwashing while chatting. I really could not comprehend what I just saw...

Drumdums, i am a long time subscriber. Love all your videos brother. This was a very good list. Heavy hitters. I wanted to tell you i have never seen any of the Italian style horrors. I watch every kind of horror from domestic to international. So i watched The Beyond on Shudder a couple nights ago. Phenomenal movie. I absolutely loved it. The gore and effects were just awesome. That was the only one on your list i had not seen. I know your a big fan of that sub genre but i just never got around to it. I will be exploring way further now into these Italian horrors and slashers. Thank you sir.

The Paranormal Activity movies always got me, especially the ending of the first one. Also, Sinister still scares me to this day. Probably the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. A lot of the found footage stuff scares the shit out of me too lol
I wanted to put at least one effective found footage movie on here, but you are not kidding about the first Paranormal Activity. That last scene got me good!

I find most of the Paranormal Activity movies to be really solid and really good to watch. There's little moments that you don't notice at first like the movement of the dots in one of them and other shadows and it all comes together when you re-watch it, you notice little tiny details all over the place.

There are more movies on the list than I thought. I guess horror movies can scare me. If I had to pick the scariest, it would be Pet Sematary. I call these types of horror movies "Visual Nightmares" because you are witnessing such frightening imagery that you can not escape, only you are awake.

Pet Sematary is the movie, but all anyone needs to say is....Zelda. In the book that back story was scary AF.....then they made it scarier in the movie....I was 21 when it came out and had nightmares about it. Her screaming never get out of bed again....ugh

@@anitaknight3915 Pascow never got to me...well the first jump scare where he grabs Lewis and comes back to life is a good one, but I didn't find him scary, maybe because he was trying to help? Zelda though....I was 21 when it came out so not a kid and we're talking the 80's I'd seen countless slasher and gore flicks, but her...I remember being in my house and whenever UI had to open the door to go into my bedroom thinking....what if she was in my bed? That was while i was awake LOL
I had the pleasure of seeing the new remake with my daughters (30/27) and we all love it, but it was a great sense of bonding as I instilled my love of horror into both of them. My wife hates horror and loves romance and Disney...but oh, well I love her anyway
I went with a group of people to watch The Blair Witch Project and we also thought it was real footage that was found. That is the most shook I've ever been in the theater. My knees were actually weak and I had to sit after the movie ended for a few minutes to regain my composure so I completely understand how you felt.

The Amityville of Horror (1979) Original film, always scare me to death, the creepy sound & music gives me the goosebumps, James Brolin does a very Scary performance as George Lutz, The Story I do find Interesting, The Amityville House is petty Scary, and Do find this movie a Very Scary film it gives me the chills & goosebumps everytime I see it and do find the film very Underrated. Great video Drumdum on horror movies that scared you, The Exorcist is also Great and Scary horror film.
For some reason I can never remember Amityville. I've seen it twice I think. I didn't find it to be that scary though.

@@Juno-ue9vs Read the book. I think it is more scary than the movie. I always believed if they would have done the movie just like the book was written it could have been the 2nd most scariest movie. Of course the Exorcist will always be number one.

This is a great list, man! I have a top 10 scariest list in the making and I can confidently say, my list is completely different! But I do agree with all of the movies on this list.
Great list. Candyman scared the hell out of me when it came out. I was 9. Seriously thought he could be summoned. As an adult, Cannibal Holocaust truly disturbed me, left me feeling unclean.

One of my most frightening experiences when watching a movie was when I was 9 and seeing this horror anthology film (a film i can't remember the name of and have been laboriously tracking down over the years but to no avail) that I believe was either produced in the late 80's or early 90's. One of the stories involved a freakish, 7 foot two-headed monster laying waste to i believe a doctor's clinic and i distinctively remember a blonde nurse working at the reception and shrieking with the two-headed monster decapitating her with blood profusely spraying along the walls. Honestly man, this monster would be little kids worst nightmare in which thank god I never had one though it did deter me from watching another horror movie for several months.
Nice list! The Exorcist, Halloween, and TCM are honestly three of my favorite movies of all time! When I was a kid, The Ring was one that scared the crap out of me when I first saw it. I think it's actually still one of the best PG-13 horror movies. And while it might seem dumb now, for some reason the opening scene of Ghost Ship traumatized the living piss out of me as a kid to the point where I couldn't watch scary movies for a while. I know you've reviewed High Tension but I was wondering if you've seen the French horror films Martyrs and Inside. These are seriously two of the most shocking messed up movies I've seen in a long time. Martyrs will especially leave you shook and wondering what you just watched, I don't think any movie has disturbed or scared me more as an adult. And while both are easily as gory, if not more so than High Tension, they're also way way better movies in my opinion, again especially Martyrs. It has a lot of thought provoking stuff in it.

Great Ranking, Lee! In addition to the films you mentioned, Jaws, the Amityville horror, and Prince of Darkness were pretty scary. Those dream scenes had a sense of dread.
Damn Prince of Darkness is soooo good. I almost put Jaws on the list. That opening scene packs a punch.
I loved this list! A lot of your movies on the list, I hadn't seen. I'll have to check them out if I can find them. I'm actually surprised Halloween wasn't your number 1 pick, seeing that's your favorite movie. I do agree with you about the exorcist being the number one For the time, getting away with everything they got to do was very scary and till this day, I still get scared watching it, but I love it. It's one of my go to movies.

No other movie got under my skin as effectively as the first time I saw Event Horizon. When I saw a man holding out his own gouged-out eyes... like some priest from hell offering you communion... and speaking to you in Latin, *while smiling*... not just the image, but not knowing exactly what he experienced that could have caused him to do that... it made Jack Nicholson running around with an axe seem pretty tame in comparison.

Fantastic list. We are in the same age range so I have seen most of the movies you listed. I remember seeing the box art for TCM as a kid and it freaked me out. The Witch definitely freaked me out bc it was such a well acted movie and the story was almost like a child’s fairy tall gone wrong without the happy ending.
Great list. Bit of a shame Nightmare on Elm St didn’t make the top 10 but hey ho it’s your list, and at least it got a HM. The Exorcist is a masterpiece and a well deserved No.1

Hey Lee, MJ’s eyes from Thriller scared me as a kid too so I definitely recommend House by the Cemetery if eyes freak you out. It has a great atmosphere and is another Fulci movie if you haven’t seen it.
This is completely unrelated but I’d love to see a review of Phantom of the Paradise from you if you can. It’s on Shudder but I don’t consider it a horror. It’s more like if Phantom of the Opera was a 70’s rock opera and it has one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard and would love to know your opinion of it.

'Great list. I always love these top tens. Some of these I haven't seen like the demon and the beyond so I'll have to check these out. Evil dead was amazing and pretty scary. Had some great gore in it too. The exorcist no surprise was the scariest on your list. It's mine too.
