Creating a handmade custom DIY surreal art collage is easy! I share my tips and techniques on how I create my analog collages as I cut out pictures and illustrations out by hand with a small pair of scissors and a craft knife. Finding inspiration from old books is one of the most fun steps to this process. These can come from used books, encyclopedias, magazines, vintage postcards, or anything else you can find lying around your house. I find most of my books and magazines from thrift stores, antique stores, flea markets, Craigslist, or even on the side of the road! Watch as I arrange my elements and try different ideas as I talk through my process to create my final design.
Collages made out of paper have a custom made feel that you can't get from a digital collage made in Photoshop. And, there is an added challenge of only being able to use materials that you have access to!
Want to try creating your own? Just grab a magazine, scissors, and a glue stick!

Oh, my! I loved the little boy and the lobster! I think the fish would have been cute, too.
The forest home is begging for some of Cecily Mary Barker's flower fairies!
The conservatory charmingly overrun by flowers reminds me of how my home is inundated (not charmingly) by collaging materials! I'm tempted to give them all away and learn photoshop. You make it look sooooooo easy. 😊
really thought i wasn't going to like this video, but you proved me wrong! was so much fun to watch, and get inspired by...
You pulled it off really well. All three look great, and fun. I'm not real big into the digital form, but it is still fun watching and listening to you having fun. No matter how you make them they're always such a pleasure to watch.
Yeah, Digital has it's pros, for sure. 😃👍
You did great on each scene. 😊👍
WOW, oh Wow! These are fantastic! My favourite has to be the boy, but OMG, all are super cool. I love the fact that you had them printed.
I have a feeling that you’re going to get addicted to doing these digital collages. You’re having way too much fun with this medium. Love the conservatory! The cool thing is you can now sell the digitals to us mere mortals who would love some of your collages.
These are so cool. It would have also been really funny to put the original uncut picture or just the cut part with the foxes and geese in the frame, as a little meta-joke 😉
Love your videos. You are so enthusiastic.
That was my question that I had asked you and Leah on the live Q&A you both did which was great and really inspiring.I am a digital collage artist myself.I think your three pieces look great and definitely came out I your style.Maybe you could find a way to mix analogue and digital together.but happy my question inspired you to try digital collage.(matt)
That conservatory is amazing!
Hi your days of cutting out are over HaHa!! Great job done brilliant.💕🏴
Another great video! Thanks so much for sharing the process with us, and for being so open to try new ways of making art.
It was so fun to watch you create these images! Thank you!
Rosie, you definitely need a printer gf! I think printing public domain images to use in your analog collages would be fantastic! That way, if you can't find an image in your books, you can just find 1 and print it. TYFS Cindy
I found my way back into the 19 100's how cool!
This was really fun, but I hope you don’t leave analog collage….those are my favourite!
Would love to see more digital collages from you! These turned out great :)
Glad you were inspired by the Q&A! These turned out great 😍 Nice to see how your style transfers to the digital space so well!
You did a fantastic job. ☺️
I never thought about doing digital collage. You did a great job!
This was so good! I feel inspired to make more digital collages too!
I don’t do so well with computers maybe one of these days, but always enjoyable to watch your new videos. Loved it like always can’t wait for the next one.❤️😊👍
How fun!😊
This was really cool. I went into the video with a major attitude about digital collage, but after seeing what you created, I have a better idea of its pluses and minuses.
What I really like is the sculptures of ancient peoples.
Why do I know nothing about coinage?
You look so directly perfect
01:58 Amused to see a pattern similar to your beautiful shirt appear right above your shoulder as you scroll through images. Enjoy seeing your work in this medium. ☀️
Loved the video…the only thing I lack is knowing how you isolated your images to place into your main landscape…need to find a more in-depth video on that one piece…
Those were some culturally dynamic picturs, and you've got a focus point that kicks but!
Love the research!
🥧🍧🏡🚖🏰🛼⏰🚀😍😍💯❣💢💋
up up and away!
I'm at the digital cursor, whereby my internet zooms; right down the interstate post doesn't do anything but cruise. No foils. But I'm looking forward.
I would put a piano in the first collage between the chairs and a bed where
Were going to Pluto for Disney art. Crop me a a side on the magmptpddt trolley. Just like overseas.
I really think this looks like fun have to try this , love ya Katie keep up the great videos did you do this on a IPad?
I'm thinking of a train of seats filled by new avante images
Sei meravigliosa ❤❤❤❤❤
Hey, Grace!
love this :D but how do you import the photos and organize them?
bring a ladder with you! hahahaha
I love the treehouse collage! Is it available to download?
WELL DONE.I HAVE BEEN MAKING ANALOG COLLAGE FOR 5 YEARS.I THINK I SHOULD GIVE PS A TRY🤔
the boy and his fish, ray bradbury
You never know when computer guys start telling jokes about groups.
How about some water aquaducts, with some bodacious outfits?
Love open access. I just sold PMed no public domain.
I don't do digital, although I'd wanted to know how to Photoshop for years. But, I have a question - in my Swap-bot group, I only allow images cut from magazines, calendars, and published productions for our surreal collages. I sometimes wish I could just print out an image, but I think that's "cheating". What do you think?
I know you weren’t asking me, but what does it mean to cheat? It’s still a found image, just from a larger pool. That doesn’t necessarily make it easier as there’s still only so much time to look for images :) I think it’s cool to create challenges, but I don’t think you have to hold yourself to that standard constantly. Sometimes it’s allowed to be a bit easier if it gets you to the place you want to be. As long as it’s still satisfying and you’re happy with your creation, it’s all good and nothing is cheating :)
You fly like a music video by queen on a chess board!
Meh. I'm not good with a computer really so this wouldn't be good for me. Give me the normal or old fashioned way any day.. you did a beautiful job though. 😊
I get so lost in your style.
