Creating a handmade custom DIY surreal art collage is easy! I share my tips and techniques on how I create my analog collages as I cut out pictures and illustrations out by hand with a small pair of scissors and a craft knife. Finding inspiration from old books is one of the most fun steps to this process. These can come from used books, encyclopedias, magazines, vintage postcards, or anything else you can find lying around your house. I find most of my books and magazines from thrift stores, antique stores, flea markets, Craigslist, or even on the side of the road! Watch as I arrange my elements and try different ideas as I talk through my process to create my final design.
Collages made out of paper have a custom made feel that you can't get from a digital collage made in Photoshop. And, there is an added challenge of only being able to use materials that you have access to!
Want to try creating your own? Just grab a magazine, scissors, and a glue stick!

Add captions--Library: "Deep dive!" and Sail boats "Sailing the prairies!" You're super!
I adore these collages! The colors on the scuba 🤿 diver are excellent! ❤
Well, aren’t these both just fabulous and fun?! As always! Great seeing you post again! Love your work! Kathleen
I love the scuba diver with the added blue! love the composition with them in the library as well! Great pieces, all in all!
Love both of these. The scuba diver looks great with the added colors.
Yes, I love the added colour too!
I love the idea of going to the library and seeing the things you might read about floating(swimming) around the room. Awesome. The sailboat painting and the whole background just goes together really good. That break did not make you rusty, you're still tops in my book. Always looking forward to more of your work.
Rosie, you're an absolute genius. You inspire me so much!
Would you be open to a tutorial? What books to source, choosing a subject, how to find a background, and how to have fun with art making! I think that could be a cool series to do!
Both collages came together so quickly and so well, the idea of creating a canvas of the scene in the artist collage was a really inspired idea.Had the thought when you were thiking about ideas for the Rosie's diner image,if you could find smaller sail boat images, what about a fleet of sail boats going for coffee at your diner maybe. I think the colour you added to the diver worked really well,it just lifted the contrast a little more in the finl piece. (matt)
YES! Line of sails around the corner to get to my diner. Love that--might have to make it happen
@@eastofhoney In the video you were showing the diner image, and you had the cut out sailboats as well and I just thought they could so work together in a collage, another surreal collage moment maybe (matt)
Also, the bluish scuba diver piece is great! I LOVE the sailboats and your little “painting”! Awesome!
Aaaahhh! Hello Rosie. Yay! Yes, absolutely adore these. So much fun x Nell.
Always such fun finding a new video! LOVE what you do, pure artistic whimsy! Yes, to your colorizing the large scuba diver.
I love how you’re able to pick right back up after a break! If you’re comfortable sharing, how much time did you spend on each piece? You make it look so easy and seamless, meanwhile I’m surrounded in a sea of images completely overwhelmed lol
These two came together much quicker than normal! Took me about 4 or 5 hours to make both of these. But some of my past pieces have taken days or weeks to finish while I'm looking for the right images. Really depends!
Thanks for asking that and Rosie, thanks for answering. I was just wondering the same thing. That makes me feel so much better. I think it’s easy to forget that you don’t just pop out these masterpieces in real time. Even for you, it takes time and lots of trial and error.
I love to collage in a picture book I have, with magazines! It’s fun and relaxing! Yours looks awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Rosie you are such a joy, your collages are wonderful, everything spot on. Thank you. X.
These collages are so good. I think your break maybe brought out your collage genius, (but I missed you😄). Thanks for today
I love the colouring you added to the scuba diver. 🤿
Both collages are great. 😃👍🏼
🎨🐠⛵
Hi Rosie! These are awesome, they came together beautifully, and coloring the scuba diver is just what he needed. Love your work and happy to see you again. tfs
Thank you so much! Its been fun trying to incorporate more mediums and techniques into my work.
@@eastofhoneyI’m so excited about this new aspect of your art. It’s so fun to see when you might throw some paint or other medium of choice in a piece. It totally enhanced both of these pieces! Every single time I watch, I think, “THIS is my favorite!” Haha! I’m glad nobody ever makes me go back and pick-I love them all. You’re a genius!
i have the same Rosie’s diner piece sitting around i’ve been waiting forever to do something with it lol
coloring of the scuba diver works! you rock!
Mixing collage with other mediums can be so tricky to make look good but i think you nailed these ❤
I love the added blue and yellow to the scuba diver! Both layouts are wonderful!
P.S. you inspired me a year ago to thrift a bunch of Nat Geos and i started a cryptid junk journal using the images from the magazines!
Definitely fun collages. Love the paint you added to the diver and the "kiddie" drawing 😊
I love your crazy mind!!! It’s great to have you back. You were missed!❤️
Two very nice collages Rosie. I loved them both but the diver in the library was my fave.
Scuba diver looks much better with color!
These are GREAT, Rosie! I love the scuba diver.
Rosie, you outdid yourself! I have been checking back as I love watching your shows.
Great to see you back at it! Thank you for sharing the detail of your process! Loads of fun!
Rosie, I learn from your videos. TY. I get stuck and trying to push through to get to the next level of creativity. It’s hard 🤣!
Love this! Keep pushing!
It all came together so well, wow! I love the scuba divers in the library! I think coloring the black and white guy worked well. Definitely a technique to use again, in my opinion =)
Thank you!!
The second smaller scuba diver really made that first collage! Love it.
I eagerly anticipate each new collage video you create. So well done.
just discovered you! How lucky I am. You have magnificent instincts, they both are wonderful!
I love them! I do like the coloring of the scuba diver. 😊❤
I always enjoy watching your creative mind working and you achieve such great results. I think colouring in the diver worked for the scene. Great job!
Thank you!! These pieces were really fun today!
They are both so good! Gave me so much inspo!
Rosie, so good to see you again, as usual I ❤️❤️❤️ your art it really worked for me and enjoyed this video lots of colour 👍👍👍 thanks 🥰
So much color! Thanks for watching 🙂
How fun. So happy I stumbled upon your channel. I think the blue you added to the scuba diver was marvelous! Perfect really. I did some diving when I lived on Maui, and there was of course a bluish tint to everything underwater. Loved the symbolism of both images, but especially the library divers. When I am super interested in a subject/book I always say I am “doing a deep dive on…..”.
Can’t wait to,check out some of your other videos. 🙂
Amazing Rosie, I love both of them. I love that you added colour to the scuba diver. But it does seem like you missed adding colour to their hands. I'm just amazed at your creativity and what you come up with.
Oops! I will double check I got it all. Thanks for watching 🙂
watercolour really workd well! I llke the idea of painting some of the pieces
Yay ... glad to see your face again :) I love the scuba diver !! x
I believe that you have an amazing amount of creativity, Rosie =:) thanks for your videos.

First time viewer and this was a real treat. Very fun
Collages … what a novel idea … to me anyway …
Never thought of that …
Plus I have lots of old magazines lying around for inspiration …
And the cutting tool … how do you call that one ?
The word escapes me…
Thank you for sharing …
Yup love them...!
Oh my, another great day, I got to see Rosie today . It always makes my day when you post something new. I love the color on the scuba diver, they both came out great. Love them both, maybe you can do the diner next time, it just seems meant for you. As always it was a great few minutes, thank you, and see ya next time. Love ya ❤️👍😊
Yes! Need to figure out a great place for the diner.
@@eastofhoney maybe a mushroom diner in space with dinosaurs as waiters and waitresses. Everything you love. But I know you’ll figure something cool out , can’t wait to find out.
Love this! Watching from the Philippines.

Una verdadera obra de arte ❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤
Hello Rosie, I’m so happy to have found your channel! I have only been collaging for a year and your videos have greatly helped with inspiration! My biggest issue is that I cannot figure out why I am tearing up the magazine paper with my x- Acto knife! I purchased some #11 blades as well as a new cutting mat and still those smaller inter-image cutting area are a mess! Am I pressing too hard? Moving too quickly? Sigh. If you can give any tips they would be very much appreciated! Thank you!
I get this question a lot so I might have to make a video about this with some tips! Mostly I think practicing is super important to get comfortable, but also always cutting down and having a slow consistent speed. I also use my other fingers (away from the path of your knife) to hold down the areas next to where you are cutting to give the paper more support. Hope those quick tips are helpful!
Rosie, Please, please make a video about using X-Acto knives! I can do the straight lines but NOT the curves! Thank you!
✨💖✨
Hi Rosie. Love your art. Do you sell it? My name is Leann and I'm from Central California, btw.
