I'd suggest Final Fantasy 14's "Misery". On the surface it looks like the usual damage vulnerability debuff but what makes it especially unique is that the way you "treat" the effect other than letting it time out is to use the /comfort emote on the affected party member.

I think one of my favorite obscure status effects was the "Old" effect from FF5.

But on enemies, it gradually reduced their level as well.

    • @lordravenblade
      @lordravenblade Před měsícem +4

I never played 5 but if I remember right that was actually an out-of-battle effect on Tellah, the mage you get as a guest party member in part of FFIV. It makes some (all?) his stats go down when he levels up instead of going up.

and that Ripper glitch was NOT fixed in the Pixel version of FF6 either but while only 3 enemies use it ALL 3 Kefka's tower parties CAN fight the Dark Force normal enemy which in turn is 1 of the 3 that CAN use it the Blue dragon ancient castle boss and the normal Reach Frog enemies are the other 2 Shadow should never fight unless he dies in the battles and stays dead.
As for X zone its MORE annoying in FF6 when enemies use it then the EFFECT from FF12 reason being the FF6 spell is a instant kill spell but it attempts to hit the ENTIRE party the FF12 effect is still only single target.
Pig/Toad FF4 are BOTH worthless spells in game.

You know, it's kind of funny how there are a number of detrimental status effects that have come and gone throughout the series, but the number of beneficial status effects has remained fairly consistent. Protect, Shell, Reflect, Regen, Auto-Life, Float, and Haste have been in most iterations. Not to say there aren't some outliers (Aura from FFVIII and Invisible from FFIX), but it seems like the devs can't think of new ways to help the players.

Another weird FFXI status effect is "Costume".
Generally, players can use fun joke items and change their appearance to become other things, from a powerful enemy to a slime to even a treasure chest, but at the end of the day it doesnt actually change a character's abilities, in fact it locks out a player from being able to attack until they take the costume off, which can be done freely.
However, there are some very rare enemies in the the game that can actually influct Costume as a debuff, locking the player into a funny form or even as a copy of the enemy themselves, and can sometimes even Charm the player as well!

that was likely done cause some quickening grinding let you steamroll so many earlier fights easily.
logically it makes sense to change the reward, but a dark mote? yeah that's too little of a reward now

@@DarkFrozenDepths I think I used quickenings like once when I played ff12. I just remember not knowing what I was doing. I'm sure I could learn how but since I beat yiazmat I decided I was good enough already lol

@@rustyjones7908 quickenings are surprisingly forgettable cause most only do them for the sky pirate's den/trophy stuff or to take out some enemies far sooner than you should be able to.
the best "DPS" later on ends up being your regular attacks anyway, more so in the zodiac versions where there's no damage cap (some people literally causing the game to crash after dealing over 1 mil damage in a hit)

What version of FFXI was that? I played it a bit on PC a few years back, since I've played every main line game, and even on decent hardware the graphics looked like trash. Nowhere near as sharp as what was in this video.

Watching this makes me miss the abandonment of turn-based even more. There were so many strategic uses for statuses in the various games. While the action titles still have status effects, they're not nearly as viable or important. They're much more boring and repetitive as a result. Give us back turn-based Square-Enix!!!

Heat, Virus, and Trouble were all stupid and impractical effects, and even though I enjoyed FF9, these novel and mostly-BS effects unfortunately sullied the FF9 experience. Similarly, the FF12 Oil and Disease effects were just the developers trying way too hard to expand upon an established and already-perfect palate of enemy debuffs.

"The item that cures the "pig" status effect in FF4. They should have called it "ointment."

At first I was like, "Why are they considering Bad Breath to be its own status effect?" Then they explained it, and I was just like, "I'm sorry, what?"
