IPS Ready Game Boy Advance SP Shells

- New shells available in several colors (all transparent so far) that are molded with IPS screen kits in mind.
TL;DW: These work with all current screen kits without the need to modify the housing. The fit is slightly loose with some OEM style installs (AGS-101, etc) so it's recommended to use the non IPS ready housings for that OR to install a spacer behind the LCD to prevent it from moving around, especially in the lower right hand corner.
So far the fit and feel of the shell itself is about the same as the previous transparent shells but the membranes it comes with are not great. I recommend using your original membranes.
If you want to get one for yourself, they are available from retrogamerepairshop: retrogamerepairshop.com/produ...

"Should I use the black buttons? I don't know why I'm asking because you're not going to answer." **screaming at my screen like a lunatic.**
3:28 That blue LED indicator looks fantastic, I'd love to do something like that to my SP
That clear green looks awesome. Definitely need to get it
Definitely a fan of the green!
Just got an atomic purple one, these are neat
I actually just bought this shell from Retromodding, but non-IPS ready. They were sold out of the IPS ready shells sadly. However I only needed to dremel the one side and everything fit really well! Very happy with the outcome of the product.
that's a completely different shell though. These are yet again a new mold.
The square nut go ZOOOOM
So I did a two tone GBA SP, clear black on the outside and clear green on the inside to look like the eggs from Alien. They were precut shell shipped with the onechip ips with the black pcb and x2 touch censors attached. It was my first time doing any mod/custom game boy, I wanted to do it for ages hence why I been watch a lot of these videos. Yours are the best Mahko 😉 even though it was precut I still had to do a small shave for the black pcb part that sticks out. All in it it came out really good, except down on the dpad doesn't feel or sound nice and clicky, but it still register. Im waiting on se clear green buttons for inside and plan to switch them. I think I also may have stripped the screw heads for the screen screws, I was using those crappy red screwdrivers these kits come with and the screws too, so I don't think I'll be taking the screen apart again. Where can I post pics?
Oh and I broke one tooth on the black hinge 😁
Imgur is a popular image host. I tend to upload pictures there. Another good place would be directly to reddit on the r/gameboy sub.
gonna pour one out for the Lugia shell 😢
will you be reusing it for another mod at some point in the future?
of course I plan on using it for a future mod. I'm probably putting this GBA back inside that shell anyway. Regardless, it's not going back in the parts bin.
Which seller produces/sells the highest quality SP shells for unmodded SP's?
Hi makho, I have a question about these kits.
I've bought an ips v2 kit from aliexpress that came with a display and a precut shell; however I've noticed that the display I got is skipping frames. Does this also happen with original funnyplaying kits? And if not, do you think replacing the ribbon cable with a funnyplaying ribbon could help?
funnyplaying does not have this problem, nor do the newer 'one chip' kits. Sounds like you got an older one, unfortunately. Yes, replacing the ribbon would resolve that problem.
Where did you get that Lugia shell? It looks really nice, does the quality match appearance?
No, it's just a cheap aftermarket shell with a laser engraving. I got it from taobao: 2.taobao.com/item.htm?id=622404595268
I picked up one of these shells about 4 months ago. The shell was in perfect condition upon arrival. I've treated it very well it's sat on a shelf when I'm not playing on it. I've now noticed cracks in the battery door and along the hinge and am super sad.
Such is life for these shells, unfortunately. I hoped these clear ones would be better but I think we all got our hopes up a bit too soon.
Sorry to ask but I'm getting into replacing the shell for my AGS 101.What type of screwdrivers to get as part of the process?
Thank you and I love your videos : )
I recommend an ifixit mako toolkit (name is a coincidence) or any of the bigger ones
@@makho Thank you! By the way, did this new shell crack or anything? I know the screws suck but besides that, not much else.
@@baseeryousufzai4605 no
@34:52 you have a nice spacer for your battery mod.
Is that something i could get 3d printed?
I didnt see a pattern on your thingiverse but maybe i missed it.
Nvm i found your video that links the part! Good stuff.
Whoa where'd you pick up those brass(?) buttons on the other SP?
copper and a friend machined them custom for me
I apologize for the late comment, I've noticed my ips ready shell has already started cracking around the hinge. Are you experiencing any issues with yours?
none yet, at least none not counting the cracks I put in from not trimming enough for the headphone jack
where I can buy silver lugia or gold ho-oh SP shells?
Are those Ifixit kits worth the money? I've been eyeing one for a few months now.
I think so. I was initially very wary because of how much they get shilled but, especially for what I use it for, they are genuinely good kits. I don't think the pro one is worth it, especially if you already have some tweezers and stuff, but the mako toolkit is. I haven't had to use it yet, but the lifetime warranty looks pretty good too. It's one of the least expensive ways to get some JIS drivers too. A standalone JIS kit is only a few dollars cheaper than the whole ifixit kit.
@@makho I think the price tag will force me to always put the bits back in their box lol I've got about 5 screwdriver sets with missing bits because I just buy a new one when I lose part of it lol. Yeah, the Mako deffo seems the best value for money and the most useful, It might have to be done. I also like the larger handle, easier on the hands.
Absolutely!!! I got the full pro kit with the magnetic pad, tweezers, picks and so on it’s amazing the screwdriver feels great the warranty is awesome I took apart my MacBook Air and the video said to use a t-5 I believe but it actually called for a p-5 so I messed up my t-5 bit and emailed ifixit they immediately got back with me and sent me 3 replacement t-5 bits and replacement spudgers for free without me even asking for them they only needed an order number or picture of my kit to prove I actually had an ifixit kit didn’t need purchase dates or receipts and so on awesome company reminds me of snap on with their customer service same exact procedures I had my replacement parts in 3 days
Diff. between the shells is the copyright symbol is larger and the other is smaller.
I want a shell like this, my 101 oem screen will fit perfectly? Or the shell needs to be uncut? Explain me if you can
yes, OEM fits
I didn't trim mine.
Dremel power FTW.
3:44 hey there ;)
So, do you have to use an IPS screen in one of these? If I put an OEM screen in there, would it bounce around in there without the support beam?
no, still fits fine, as I demonstrated in the video.
@@makho Sorry, I must have missed that part. Thanks!
@@makho ummm you said for oem screen 101 may you should put the sponge for the bounce on the screen 🤕
@@TorukRD wat
@@makho well if you don’t know how to interpret a bad english ok 🤷🏻♂️
Having unique serial numbers on the stickers is kind of bad for people buying used consoles. I had been google searching the serial number but it looks like that's no longer a valid way to see if the shell is authentic.
Ughhhh that lugia shell I want one so badly but I can't find them anywhere grrrrr. I'm kind of fine with my ags 101 but I want a new project to work onnnnn.
I literally linked to it in my last video. They are made custom by one seller and available on taobao.
I bought on aliexpress a similar shell, it was blue clear but not ips-ready. The thing is, every screw they sent with the kit was phillips, not a single triwing. I ended up with a severe stripped screw on the battery slot and had to basically break it. Really sad, and still don't understand why I got only phillips screws.
if it wasn't molded for the IPS screen, it's a different shell
@@makho it definetely is. My only doubt is why does it fit only phillips screws
@@kerdionss because that's what the factory included. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What does (or) stand for i don't understand? I understand oem but (or) idk.
I don't understand what you're asking. I don't recall using "or" as an acronym.
I hesitate on changing my SP's shell cause it's a Kermit the Frog green, and I suspect that was the DK bundle from Target, but... it's got some significant wear, and I kind of do want to mod it beyond just doing the battery.
buy another console for modding then
@@makho I went and reshelled it anyway.
I can always buy another SP mainboard and put that in the old shell.
Is it me, or do the rubbery screw covers not come with any adhesive backing?
@@Omega_2 the new ones do not in most cases, correct
Dumb question perhaps, I am new to this, what does ISP ready mean?
ISP is typically "internet service provider". I assume you mean IPS and that is a type of LCD technology generally known for it's better color reproduction (and much better viewing angles) compared to other types of LCD.
how do you have all this stuff laying around
I like game boys
does the top half have the precut area to fit the screen?
yeah, it should assuming you get one of the "ips ready" ones
How did you get the power led to turn blue?
replace LED
35:08 Are you sure it didn't come with 2 per shell? It looks like on says 101 on it
I got two shells and two stickers. You do the math. It says AGS-001.
@@makho umm. I wasn’t trying to be rude. I was just confirming. It’s odd that one was a 101 and the other was 001. It’s not very clear but thanks for insulting my basic math skills.
@@Madblaster6 You're asking me "are you sure" about what I got. Yes, I'm sure I got two stickers for two shells. One does say AGS-101 but the one I used says AGS-001. I wasn't sure what you were asking about. The one that says AGS-101 also says "C/AGS-JPN" on it when AGS-101 consoles were not released in Japan nor are they referred to as AGS consoles, they are AGT consoles. It should read "C/AGT--USA" (or EUR or AUS or whatever region). So thanks for insulting me first if we're going to start making assumptions about each other since apparently I don't even know what I got. (I hope you're not serious about that insulting thing because if so you can fuck right off. Otherwise, I'm assuming you're just reading way too much into this.)
@@makho dude! I’m not arguing with you. I told you I wasn’t trying to be rude! What’s your problem?!
I have a very high respect for your channel and I’m quickly loosing it. You’ve been very negative toward my comments lately. I thought we are in a community where we’re supposed to help each other. I wasn’t questioning you I was just confirming. I wanted to be sure what I got in case I ordered it. I thought maybe they sent 2 per so you got to choose which one you wanted to put on. It’s a neutral question, you only chose to take it the wrong way.
I even recommend your stuff to others but I guess you forgot.
Too bad, only transparent shells. I'll pass, as I hate those.
