Like the AGB version of the kit, this kit does have custom color palette/filters that you can apply via a touch sensor. Take a look at this imgur album I have compiled to see all the palettes and filters: imgur.com/a/wYgLPUt
So this is basically an updated version of the Game Boy Color kit but with a bunch of fixes that should have been implemented in both the v1 of this kit and the v1 of the GBC kit. Hardware wise, the kit is 100% identical but with a small portion shaved off the bottom for better fit in a GBA SP and the unused connectors cut off the top so I suspect that this kit will have GBC compatibility soon and will hopefully include the fixes implemented here such as the smooth framerate and hardware button controls. For science, I did test this PCB in a GBC with the ribbon cable that came with the original kit. It kinda works which is what is leading me to believe compatibility is coming. Fully compatible kits, I suspect, will be labeled '3 in 1': • AGB/AGS '2 in 1' IPS K...
Update: Per the manufacturer, they have no intention to continue iterating the GBC kits so no GBC compatibility is coming any time soon. Perhaps they will revisit after their new MGB IPS and GameGear kits.
This kit includes two touch sensors pre-soldered on so you do not have to do any soldering yourself to install. If you want to use button controls, you can still solder the kit the same way the old kits were (so one wire brightness button for SP, or three wire up and down controls for AGB) or you can use the touch sensors or you can use both. Color palette swapping is currently only supported by the touch sensor.

Additionally, IPS ready custom molded shells for the SP are on the way and will be stocked soon.

"Why do you keep changing the title and thumbnail?"
I fell for the marketing. How can this kit be "v2" if the last kit is "v2"? Well, neither is the second iteration of the IPS kit. The "v2" designation from sellers is purely for marketing and only because the funnyplaying v2 kit is the good one (compared to the funnyplaying v1 kit). So now ALL of the kits appear to be marked v2, even the first or fifth iteration. Don't fall for the marketing bullshit. I've removed the version numbers entirely from the video. You can still easily identify these kits from the new hardware layout (PCB vs ribbon cable) and the "2 in 1" markings.

Just finished my IPS (2 in 1) mod following this great guide. This is the only guide with touch sensors that I could find.
I used portions of this to complete the mod. The results were spectacular! Thanks!
I really want to know about the man behind this beautiful channel! So when are you doing a non technical Q&A!?😬😂
I guess I could do a stream at some point
55:53 those alternative colour pallets are kinda cool for the third gen games considering they didn't come with an actual day and night cycle that changes visually unlike Gold - Silver - Crystal then beyond
Love this 2in1 kit, I just installed it yesterday, I bought it from a seller that advertises using LG only panels and it looks amazing. In the package I see a sticker "made by hispeedido". Very close to GBA SP 001 (no ghosting / artifacts) but with nice sharpness / color brightness.
The color palettes looks very nice for game boy games with left + B for grayscale. The front is per-installed so close to the LCD, it almost looks laminated.
It looks so sharp, I haven't had a reason to use past 2,3 level brightness on this kit for indoor play.
Great vid, that Pokémon phone call had me rolling. "Oh for f**ks sake" accurately describes the timing of the phone calls in game.
Glad to see you use Helder’s battery. Helder is my boy, I know him personally.
A small tip: for "hiding the cut marks" on the transparent shell, use a slightly damp with acetone cotton swap. It helps hide the white marks that you get. Don't need much, pretty much dip it in, squeeze out the excess and then rub it over the area you want to affect.
Seems like it could be dangerous. Another option is to add clear paint or nailpolish. That will fill in some the roughness and hide the marks.
Thanks for the PSA about the two LCD manufacturers. I ordered two from funnyplaying just in case they run out of LG stock in the future.
What seller do you recommend for buying a high quality pre-cut shell?
Good video. Nice joice of black buttons and switches
I just bought this kit from retrogameshop on eBay, planning to put on a motherboard that I took the 101 screen off couple years ago to put it on a regular gba.
Not that I couldn't just google and check out the screen myself, but the link you posted to purchase the ips screen goes to this video instead of Retrogame's shop. :P
Thought I already fixed that. Try refreshing the page.
Thanks for this video - i followed it to install my touch screen kit i got from ali-express - didn't do any of the soldering. the screen is night and day compared to the old one and even the replacement shell is good quality. the only part which took me ages was removing the old hinges from the old gba sp to put in the new shell. no idea why they dont just supply new hinges with the replacement shells? very odd.
I would strongly recommend the Dremel with the Dremel drill press for these mods that require cuts. Grab a high speed cutting bit and you’ll be set. I’ve been using one and it makes these mods really really easy. We’re talking seconds to cut immaculate results, even on clear shells. I’d be happy to send you pictures of my setup and some cases I cut.
With the Dremel drill press you just lower the bit and route the shell around the bit. You can be super precise with it. Just put masking tape on the side of the shell that makes contact with the plate on the press.
Great video! Rayovac batteries are discontinued and only available few left on some stores. It's like a treasure hunting hahahah and they are not shipping them, like you have to go to the physical store. I tried reaching some of them around a 15 miles radius at Miami FL. Amazing shell and screen!
Yep, shame about the batteries. They are actually really nice
@@makho I'll buy the ones you made. I just saw it on retrogaming!
Great video as always!!
The AliExpress’s GBA SP IPS screen is as good as the one from the retrogamerepairshop?
probably the same one just with much slower shipping
@@makho Thank you!!
They should make a display that changes hues 5 times a second.
I like the blue power led. I can't remember. Have you done a video on doing that?
no, not yet
Color pallete swap seems useful for those with color blindness. Although I'm curious how this kit handles transparency vs the Funnyplaying kit.
I hadn't considered that aspect. I wonder how useful it is in that aspect though.
Transparency is basically the same as neither kit does anything special. It comes down to the specific LCD.
Nice one! I don't know why the IPS kits i have are so different to yours, maybe it's just the UK import from out version of eBay. They have the board on the ribon but it's much neater.
Yeah he mentions this is a different design where the ribbon and board are separate.
@@j.m.e.2090 I mean even the ribbon screens i have are different to his ribbon one he shows in this video but i've just seen his other comparison video where he has the same ribbon based ips screen i have.
@@alluma5133 I showed off the funnyplaying ribbon. The older version of this is the 'one chip' ribbon and I only have one of those (currently installed in my mana blue GBA SP)
Totally unrelated so sorry in advance but are you going to finish your 18650 power supply build? Interested to see you revisit that.
Probably not tbh. Life keeps getting in the way and there's a new supply I'm looking at that looks way better than what I was making. If either thing works out, I'll share more details at that time.
Hey Makho. Is there a way to modify the hardware to reduce the sensitivity of the sensors on the back of the lid? In my experience the sensors were prone to accidental presses whenever my index fingers touched the back lid when opened during game play.
I believe that removing the small capacitor next to the six pin package that the touch sensor wires into will adjust the sensitivity. That or you have to replace that capacitor with one of a higher value. I don't recall off hand.
If you want to disable the capacitive sensing entirely, just remove that six pin package. The button control will still work.
So I have a question: Do I have to solder the wire from the video-cable to the brightness button? Because I want to use the brightness button for smth else (Bluetooth paring). So can I change the colors and brightness just with the touchpads?
just touchpads is fine, yeah
My problem with my mod is that the sensors react even if i dont touch anything (on the lens as well). Have you tried to solder at least the brightness to the original button? 🙈 It kinda annoys me
nearly an hour of power
"Hey, I could have sworn the title said 'v2,' but now it says 'v3.' What gives?"
In typical "one chip" fashion, they quietly released a revision without actually marking it as such. The v2 kit is a software revision only so visually the kit is indistinguishable from v1. Allegedly this release fixes the stuttering that I noticed on the v1 kit and improves some of the flickering artifacts in some games. I do not have one of these kits to verify. Everything else should be identical to v1. That would make this one v3.
You know if funny playing eventually is going to send toppoly screens when they got out stock of lg screens?
When they run out of stock, yes. Who knows when that will be though.
Makho, have you tried modding a SP where you close the screen halfway down and the system goes to sleep? Would love for you to try and show us while you're at it.
I haven't and I don't intend to. The screen itself is such a low power device compared to the rest of the system (unless you have the brightness all the way up in which case just lower the brightness) especially on IPS modded consoles that turning it off has a relatively negligible impact on battery life. If playing on a flash cart, it's better to just enable sleep.
@@makho So would you rather buy and use this kit with a circuit board or the original kit with just the ribbon cable? Can't make up my mind.
@@nusdogg this kit
Is there an aliexpress or taobao link for this One Chip kit ?
Could I use the touch sensors and the button for the brightness or is it either or?
you can use one or the other or both. Having a touch sensor does not disable button based controls and vice versa.
Does this kit have the same retention issue with games like Super Mario Bros and Links Awakening DX?
same as the older version of this kit, yeah. I didn't test this unit with Links Awakening DX but I tested the GBA one and got the same results.
@@makho Ah good to know. Thank you very much.
Where did you buy this kit? And how did you solve the fuse problem with your battery? Recently, I modded my GBA (not sp) with a Lipo Battery. It's awesome
It's linked in the description. What fuse problem?
@@makho this video czcams.com/video/a5Vbos37QCc/video.html
@@jamesytez6639 I thought you fixed it by just replacing the fuse
@@jamesytez6639 I don't understand what you think the problem is. I explained in that video why that issue happens (user error, connecting the battery backwards) and how to fix the issue when that happens.
@@thiefrules ok. I was wrong. I thought it was a common mistake when you use lipo batteries or something. I have to learn how to read the title twice
I have 2 gba sp systems, both ags 001. I was wondering if there are any inexpensive ways of getting a backlit display that you recommend. Im not too picky when it comes to a display, just wanted to have 240x160 resolution that is the same as the original.
you could watch the video you're commenting on
@@makho I was unclear with my wording, I am at 8 mins with the vid. I meant to ask which display you would recommend if you could only have one, that is under ~50 USD.

@@makho Thanks, I just got into soldering by fixing my broken wired xbox 360 controller that had a frayed cable. I later wanted to mod one of my gba sp, found your channel that way.
So which kit is better old one or new without soldering?
what is "better" for you?
@@makho the lcd's are diffrent
so the LCD being a backlit make it a better quality LCD? cause my current battery gets me 2hrs and plan on doing the battery mod soon. and the LCD is taking 2x the power. Why would anyone wan't to kill their battery 2x faster? im missing something here.
If you don't see an increase in quality with the new LCD then this mod clearly isn't for you. Or maybe you do but don't think it's worth the decreased battery life. Either way, the quality of the image is significantly improved with one of these kits compared to a stock SP, especially if your SP has a damaged screen.
@@makho you right sacraficing battery is not worth it. Do they have oled screens? im more lickly going to do it anyways. Ive already purchased mods from yo website. But soon found out from you i had a 101. So i had to hunt a new one.
What's the name of that tool used in 9:51 to measure power consumption?
It's a custom power supply I made with cheap off the shelf parts. czcams.com/video/leoks1pUpcs/video.html
I don’t script this, you guys know me😂😂😂
I don't think the soldering is that difficult. You just have to know not to nick the plastic.
You say that but I've seen some shit. Nothing I've done, mind, but some people are not so technically minded.
did u have that shell lazer eched? if so where did u get it done?

@@makho thanks!
hello! i tried installing this one today but it just boots up to a black screen, i can see it turning on and there's sound and everything, but its just black? is it defective or did i miss something?
Make sure all your cables are seated properly. Unplug and replug. As long as you tested it before getting everything installed, if there is an issue with the kit, you should have no issues seeking a refund or replacement.
@@makho hey, thanks for taking the time to answer! I appreciate it. I did try both things to no avail and since I ordered from retrogamerepairshop (30 day return policy), I live in europe it took more than a month to get here, so doubt I can refund it. It's okay though, also I'll try a kit of a friend soon, will update!
okay so I just tried a regular funnyplaying kit and it worked perfectly, so I'll just assume the other kit was defective
I installed this 2in1 ips on a GBA (China, aliexpress), when the battery drops (as soon as i get the red light) i experience screen freeze, the sound continues to play and the system is responsive (you can hear it), only the screen is frozen. Anyone else has experienced this? Is this normal?

@@makho i did and he sends a replacement, its probably the board... Do you think the problem could lie in the lcd screen? Finally, could i use an LG lcd instead of the Topoli? Is it compatible with this board?
I there a way I can just get the PCB?
Some sellers might offer just the PCB at a discount but you'd have to ask them. I don't know of any off hand.
Where did you buy the kit?
linked in the description
Can I put this in a gba with an ags 101 cable?
I mean, you can, but they also make literally this exact kit with a 32 pin AGB connector on it

Where can I find a install diagram for the wired xbox 360 pcb board. I am planning on buying one. I am also wanting to purchase some of your gba sp hinge tools if you are able to sale them.
there should be no diagram needed. Just install the port on the board and then install the board on the controller. I do not sell those tools.
