- When used appropriately, ghost notes can have a major impact on your overall musicality and can drastically open up a whole new set of options when constructing drum parts. And in this video, we're going to help you bring your ghost notes back to life so you can do just that!
I'm sure you've heard this question time and time again, "What separates a good drummer from an ok drummer?" And the answer is always, "Dynamics." And it's true! If dynamics arent a focus of your drumming then you're going to have a harder time standing out from the crowd. But when used properly, dynamics (and in this case, ghost notes) will separate you from the pack and shine a new light on your drumming.
Todd will show you exactly what you need to know in order to understand ghost notes, how to use ghost notes in your drumming, where to place your ghost notes, and, most importantly, how to use ghost notes effectively. And let's just say Todd knows what he's talking about, having been the touring drummer for the legendary band "Styx" he definitely knows a thing or two about bringing your ghost notes back to life.

I just love this guy...
This is the first video I've watched of Todd's videos. He really is an amazing teacher. He could teach a penguin to fly.
Although ive got ghost notes down and I'm a pretty good drummer I've gotta say Todd is an incredible teacher. He does what every great educator does; makes it so understandable, tells us how he learnt baby step by baby step and is relatable. Class act.
What an amazing teacher, and he is just talking really relax, great video Drumeo thanx a lot!
this was a lot more instructive that my drum teacher.
what did he do?
Excellent pacing and clear, quality teaching. No unrelated tangents or shameless self-promotion. Thanks for the great video!
Magnificent! God, I LOVE this channel!
Awesome narrative on your early development and connection to Steve Smith.
I love ghost notes the idea of them is great they add so much dynamic to any simple beat. It’s also really simple but effective to apply the same idea to other instruments
This was awesome!
This channel is helping me tremendously learning the drums!
Happy to help!
2 years into drumming and this channel has been my biggest resource.
Todd is the man. Giving back via mentorship. I'm 66 and started drumming at 63 after beating prostate cancer. When Todd speaks the best action is to shut-up and listen!
since i discovered ghost notes, i can't play without them, drum fills sounds so empty without them!
Same!
true that
You have to control it, if you use it all the time, they will not have the same value as if you only use them when you need to.
Jojo V. Jordet I was just about to tell him the exact same thing mate. Play the sing. Not the groomers and rhythms you know. That’s where the fun lay for me.
Been playing for 9 months now, I’m just starting to play around with ghost notes and subtle dynamics. So much fun 🙌🏻
Fantastic lesson! Thank you so much, Todd.
Yeeessss!!!! I just asked for this yesterday and now I get this video. Thank you Drumeo!!!!
Drumeo is my main source for anything online drum related. Thanks Jared + team!
The difficult thing for me being mostly a linear drummer is laying in some of the ghost notes at the same time as my bass drum.. This is perhaps due to no lessons early on and getting stuck in limited patterns for many years.. until CZcams that is.. Every time I see Todd play I am more impressed by his skill.. And thank you Drumeo.. you have been on a 'roll' lately ;)
Great video!!!! Thank you Drumeo and thank you Todd Sucherman.
I'm glad I know exactly what song Todd's talking about. The whole of Enigmatic Oceans is amazing, and the multiparters specifically are immaculate.
One of the patterns that really struck me on his DVD. Great lessons right here...
That was awesome, thanks so much for this lesson and notation, off to the kit, just love that groove and feel. Cheers Bruce :-)

Really good!! Great tips and drumming.
I love your traditional grip. Thanks man

*Thanks drummer really thankful for this experience*
U r really a sweetheart drummer
Nice little lesson! 👏👏👏
Awesome album. Great drummer
Thank you Sir Todd
This is a nicely done tutorial. Great drumming. I prefer metal snare drums, but that 8x14? Lacquered, Looks and sounds amazing! This vid actually opened my eyes further, on grace notes. Ty!!!
Thank you sooo much.
And I thought I was the only kid who loved John Luc Ponty. Must have been a real thrill getting that letter from Steve. Great demo sir, really enjoyed. I've been drumming for only about a month, but I'm absolutely obsessed. Most fun I've had in years.
Very helpful!
Todd you are so much more than just a Rock drummer man.
awesome video!
Great lesson Todd! :)
much needed one
Thanks!
This dude is another fine example of what and how a professional musician should strive to be. There's nothing but normal down-to-earth humble guy who never forgot where he came from, exuding from him and how he'd love others who are trying to make it as a professional musician to succeed as he did. By the way, he's fucking killer behind a kit, and though he makes it look and sound easy, the shit he's doing and does is anything but easy unless u have 100's and 100's of hours of practice and experience playing. Just a quick example, I play every other day behind the kit and daily with sticks on practice pad doing rudiments and sticking concepts, plus I have 30 years experience playing live in all kinds of bands, and he does shit all the time I have to go over and over. Drums, or any instrument one wants to master, pretty much has to become your one and only. Unless you're born a prodigy musically, and even then one has to practice daily.
Jean-Luc Ponty. Superb. 👍
I will learn this
This is a famous Santana groove, wery fun to play
Awesome video
that's a classic bill bruford rhythm i love it
Yeah! Agreed. And his snare sounds like Bruford's too!
great video
Great vid :)))
This beat kind of reminds me of the one used in "In a Big Country"
Hey this is so cool
Thk U!
Thanks. Almost never use ghost notes. Hope to find applications. Mostly they are not written in sheet music and in the basic rhytms in most styles.
That golden finish on your bassdrum pedal is so sick! What pedal are you using?
Haunting.
At about 6:13 you can see he is hitting the snare three times (I think) just by flicking his fingers. Like...damn...could we PLEASE have a video on this/his technic? I would really like that because I have been focusing on the technical part of the drums for the past three months or so...
Great video as always! Keep up the good work! Btw, Todd is great.
My dad played drummer of a band named scar

Ghost Notes
Brann Dailor approves!
Wow! Now this is taking ghost notes to a whole new level. Todd that is so cool that you’ve connected the dots and have this much freedom on the kit. It’s Awesome that Steve Smith took the time to explain what he was playing so you could learn the patterns. I love how we support and help each other in the drumming community. Thank you again for sharing this lesson. Man I’ve got some more practicing to do. One question guys. Where is the link for the sheet music?
George H Way snare! Carter Mclean signature?
Oddly, I never had an issue with ghost notes. I guess I was lucky!
Man that snare drum is like a perfectly cooked steak for the ears
relief!
good sounding ghots notes.... hard stuff.... but keep it on 🙂
Can Drumeo consider new vids w Pat Petrillo and the tiered drum pad from Drumeo. Watch the few you have, they’re great! Would love to see more from Pat now that I have your pad.
Sounds like the secret to the "Mars Volta" vibe
never too late to-get it
Ghost notes are fun
Qué medidas tiene el tacho? Suena mortal
I've got to play three drum solos in the next few months (one for a school competition, one for a gig and one for another performance) do you have any advice or tips for a good solo? (And keeping time, with the hihat)
I am not a professional drummer but I have some experience on stage (drumming and other activities). Here is what I do:
1. Knowing what I can and can't do to guide myself without wasting any time practicing my solo but I don' t limit myself to absolutes, if I want to try something, I go for it.
2. While practicing, I try to have an idea (written down or heard or found while messing around etc.) to base my solo around.
3. Emptying my mind from everything non-related to drumming.
By doing these I can (especially for a competition) minimize the chance of messing up (which is more important than trying to be impressive), have a compelling and gripping story of my own that will get my audience's attention (from what I have seen, no one cares about a solo being too simplistic or hard to perform if it doesn't sound good) while being compeletely immersed in the moment, living the solo.
(For a competition in particular, if I want more advanced or hard stuff to impress people, I do whatever I want as long as I am sure that I can play it perfectly pre-stage.)
I know I haven't said anything about starting or organizing a drum solo but that's because you will decide what you think is best and that there are those who are much more qualified than I am in this subject.
For hi-hat timing, and timing in general, whenever I think about keeping time, I mess up. So what I do is to forget about my hi-hat foot and just feel the time to be able to count it if need be. Then I let my hi-hat foot take over the metronome. That way I subconciously force my foot to be the time keeper which makes it possible to focus on my other foot and hands. It may not be as easy as I have written it down but it is the best method I got right now.
I hope this helps and may you have a good day/night.
Yu da Man😆
Any body know a place I can get drum lesson in Atlanta Georgia

Wish I had drums at my house so I cud practice anytime , as it is now I got to go to church to practice the drums ,
