"..which may or may not have inspired some of the riffs on Guns and Roses Paradise City many years later..." was a perfect piece of diplomacy there, Brandon 😅 Fantastic profile of a seriously under appreciated drummer, probably the heaviest jazz player of all time. Great work as always, Drumeo. P.s love hearing the way our trans- Atlantic brethren pronounce "Birmingham"..

I've mostly discounted a lot of drummer on the sole basis that Neal Peart existed, but one day while listening to Master of Reality, the drumming resonated with me a lot more than usual, and completely changed my opinions on things. I'm not a drummer, but Bill Ward makes me wish I were. (not a drummer due to lack of space, if space ever increases, there will be a drum kit filling it)

I think the difference between pre and post ward heaviness is that heavy psychedelic or blues groups came from the basis of an inner feeling being expressed to communicate everyones unique individuality almost like a group of soloists, each channeling infinity. The cosmic universal beauty celebrated 1=ALL . To me metal is more of the earth, and communicates the unified aspects of the human race and nature, and Bills work in retrospect signified the extremity of the darkness reflected from the world, but communicated through music , which is beauty, and he and SABBATH as a group became known as the heavy metal pioneers, because they reminded us through music of what is camaraderie and musicians playing AS ONE and that we are all one. .......maaaaan....

Bill Ward is a God tier drummer and deserves to be brought up consistently in the same sentence as his peers like Bonham and others. Bill didn't just keep time, he swang and grooved all other these songs and created the most unique musical landscape ever. The way he hangs back just a bit behind the rest of the band in the intro for Into the Void gives me goosebumps. His fills in the chorus of War Pigs in their 1970 live show are electrifying. Bill Ward was the heart of Black Sabbath and he will never ever be replicated. Such a nice bloke too.

Mastodon are one of those bands that declined steadily with every album and Brann's drumming seems to have gone down with the ship. His drumming on 'Remission' is probably my favourite performance by any drummer on any album ever, but he seemed to lose the magic over the years. HIs early stuff felt so much more energetic and chaotic, like it was on the verge of falling apart at any minute. His rubato style where his feels would speed up and slow down mid-roll was so easily identifiable. That seems to be gone now. He has simplified his style to a huge extent, probably to allow him to satisfy his desire to take part in the vocals so much.
