- Originally recorded in 1936 by Duke Ellington, "Caravan" has become a rite of passage for drummers due to its quick tempo and challenging Latin to swing feel changes. Most arrangements of the tune feature a drum solo as well. In this video, Nandi Bushell will perform her version of "Caravan" in the Drumeo Studio!

"learnt" isn't a word. Make sure you spend time on your English so you don't sound like the american Wakanda people
Can you guys maybe add in an aspect of the show where the original performer (when available) reacts to the cover work? I think it would be interesting to see how they react to someone else's interpretation of their original track.
@@happyninja42 1936...
@@happyninja42 She is playing to an in ears midi click track and the video is composed of multiple takes - not showing her bass drum play continuously. At 5:00 you can see a cut where the cymbal magically stops swinging.
It would be hard to compare to any live performance...
@@mahleu what the hell does that have to do with what i asked?
Caravan is the hardest song I have learnt, so far... I am so proud to have been invited on to Drumeo at 13. I wanted to show everyone what I am currently capable of, and have as much fun as possible. I decided to play the hardest song I knew. It’s tricky as it’s really fast and there is a lot to remember. I need a lot of stamina to play triplets on the hi-hat. Also the triplets on the kick are very difficult to perform at this speed. I gave it my best shot. I played to my tempo and I am proud of my performance.
You did great. Keep it up!
Absolutely insane work Miss! Can't wait to follow your career for the coming decades!
You did fantastic only thing was the dynamics where slightly off but 9/10 from me well done
wonderful to see! keep shining
Incredible performance Nandi! Been following you for a long time and the energy you put on this one was quite amazing. Congratulations!
Are you rushing or are you dragging? Probably neither! You're awesome!
Lol. Both. But for a few beats every once in a while, she’d fall right in. Freakin unbelievable playing. She’s such a gem, love hearing her tackle this sort of stuff.
You used the correct "you're" ...
Thank you. 😁
I couldn't hear any deviation tbh

Everytime I see her play a song, no matter how hard, she always looks like she’s having fun.
I know Nandi likely wont see this comment, but I felt I should leave it anyways. Nandi Bushell is the definition of a prodigy. She's hard-working, dedicated, and motivated. Being a prodigy doesn't mean talent comes natural, it still requires serious effort. I've likely put in less hours in 25 years on the drums than she has in her lifetime. Her flawless polyrhythms and ghost notes only add to this spectacular performance. Kudos, Nandi - I wish you all the success in the world.
What is a ghost note?
@@alaskayoung3413 a much lighter drum hit, usually between the main notes. If you watch her snare playing, you'll see her playing very light hits, those are ghost notes
@@yoshums7970 ah makes sense. Guitar player here.
@@alaskayoung3413 it's not something you really do outside of percussion , but it adds a lot of body to the playing.
@@yoshums7970 guitar/drummer here ghost notes are also used when playing guitar its just muting the strings but still hitting them usually noted as x's on tabs
Non-drummers: Wow, she's inspired me to buy a drum kit!
Drummers: Wow, she's inspired me to sell my drum kit!
wow she's inspired me to play the same song 🗿🗿
Pretty much yes 😁
I never type "LOL," but ... that's hilarious.
@@Linkmeister518I want to treat you to a night of CBT.
Word!
The fact that she's only 13 blows my mind. She's incredible!
Not QUITE my tempo…LOL! Just kidding, this is amazing!!! The fact that she’s just 13 and learned ao many of these advanced techniques says a lot about what kind of legendary drummer she can become if she decides to stick with it!!
Having more prodigies is one of the actual, tangible benefits of living through the internet era. One of the great hopes for the internet was a greater proliferation of knowledge and kids learning to play incredibly complex pieces of music is an example of that working.
Careful m8!!! Theyll flag ya for that!
Not uncommon, there are so many better younger drummers but BLM so. . . . . people like Yoyoka Soma get overlooked. DON'T OVERLOOK HER! SHE BLOWS NANDI AWAY!
@@powerface71 big ups m8! BLM was/is a scam. I mean...the president said so.
THIRTEEN!? Absolutely astounding. Also a joy to watch how she feels her way through the rhythms. The grins when she's really digging the energy she's putting out there and feeling the song develop around her playing. Really fun to behold.
As a long time professional musician and music educator I’m blown away by this young lady’s talent, enthusiasm, and charm. She is a ray of sunshine in a troubled world. Keep it up, Nandi!!
As I posted to Mastodon:
"There's kid performers out there that you're amazed at because they're "Amazing for a kid", then there's performers who are just really good at what they do.
Nandi Bushell is in the latter group."
All facts!!!
as I've said previously, you need an enabler to be good at any craft, music or sport.
You need someone to take the daily duties of cooking and cleaning and paying bills so you can focus 24/7.
This is easy being a kid, because your parents are your enablers!
as an adult you need a VERY supportive partner. THESE are HARD TO FIND. not impossible, there are naive groupies out there.
therefore, there will always be 'talented' kids who had what they needed to improve their skills.
not to take anything away from us, pre internet folks, we had all the discarded chords the Beatles didnt use (before oasis took the rest)!
the next generation will therefore need to make something from nothing. I wish Nandi all the best when she begins her career.
I played this entire song at 240 bpm in 6th grade and won my local battle of the bands
and then my alarm clock woke me up
Duuuude! I did not see that coming!!!
😅😅😅😅😅😅
Lol lol
Can you all see how she improved her technique so fast?
This girl will be a legend.
Yes! and shout-out to her teachers!
The online community has gotten to witness a rare, positive coming-of-age story in real time. I watched her get big on tik tok doing drum covers years ago and not only has she grown but her skills have improved in kind. I hope to be sitting with my daughter in ten years, showing her these videos and telling her she can do any damn thing she's willing to work her ass off for. Cheers!
Wow! Imagine being in her school's talent show, and having to perform after she does that. Really impressive playing!
I remember having to makeup and learn a dance (to Britney Spears) and then performing in our school talent show. We lost. 😂😂
"Well done Nandi! And now Greg is going to show us Around the World with his yo yo"
I'd just go home. 🤣
Yeah it’s a real shame school talent shows don’t exist in the UK.
I assume they have a prize for, “Best performance by a student who is not Nandi.” 😂
I have been drumming for 25 years and i can tell that this is the hardest song that i have learnt by far, and it took me almost a year to learn it, and she did it in 3 months impressive. Congrats
Maybe you should have a guy throwing cymbals and chairs at you to speed up the learning (only works with this song)
I feel like you maybe had a job and other responsibilities that a 13 year old does not. You're both incredible musicians for having learned it at all!
@@DEADPEDAL True but drumming for 12 years longer than her entire lifespan is also a consideration lmao.
You're right though, anybody who can learn this is fantastic and worthy of praise.
This young lady is a remarkable talent, and displays an amazing attitude of positivity. Watch her career closely; she will go FAR.
NOT MY F*CKING TEMPO... JK she's awesome!
Seriously though, not enough credit is being given to Whiplash for putting these great pieces in the public eye.
@@nahor88caravan is a standard. Anyone who knows jazz knows caravan in one form or another.
@@refusetolose05 That's my point; the average person doesn't know Jazz today. A lot of people saw Whiplash cuz it was nominated for Best Picture. It brought Jazz back into the public eye.
I'm not talking about the Jazz community.
I grew up playing classical piano and learned the cello in school. I knew jack shit about Jazz besides knowing who Duke Ellington is, and I legitimately thought Caravan was composed for Whiplash.
@nahor88 if you'd like to explore some fun jazz look up Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra Soft lights hot music : live at the village vanguard.
Every song on that album is fire.
@nahor88 compensation is my favorite on the album. Joe Lovano's sax solo is top notch. The song and arrangement is a masterpiece.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. That...I'm in tears. That was so unbelievably amazing. The number of times I said "GOTDAMN!" in a six minute video....
The Force is strong with this one. 🔥
As Palpatine said, "We will watch your career with great interest "
I lol'd in agreement
It's not just the complexity--I've seen many drummers play this song. It's the musicality of her rendition that stands out.
idk nothing about music recording but man i think these drums just sound awesome
From what I understood she learned it from the sheet music. Still incredibly awesome though!
Well, yeah... Everyone learns it from sheet music. That doesn't determine the expression and interpretation
She did a great job for her age; however, she's quite out of sync with her timing and doesn't really lock into the groove properly. The musicality of her rendition is what's lacking in my view, but I'm pretty confident she'll build that naturally with experience.
I disagree.
One of my favorite songs to play on the saxophone 🎷. She is by far one of the best drummers I have heard in this day and age.
Nandi, darling, just wanted to say thank you for a) doing Caravan justice and b) more, importantly introducing the younger folk (40 and younger, giggle) to the intricacies of jazz. I look forward to watching your progression in your drumming career.
Cheers from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦!
Came here to make a “not my tempo” joke but no seriously-Nandi rocked this. Hard ass song and she crushed it!
Still not my tempo 😂
Me too!! She is amazing!
“Talent” / “skill” / “proficiency” / and “gifted” utterly fail to describe what I just saw and heard here. Amazing.
Nope, 'skill' would actually be the right one. Because skills are learned, built and trained. Talents are something you're born with. This girl plays since she's like 3 or so and probably practices several times several hours per day. This here is the product of excitement, enormous dedication, probably some talent and a huge amount of hard training
Why do people still believe in talent and gifted people, I swear to god
@@pedromiranda1524 I believe in talent or gift when discovering a new skill: you may have an initial advantage over the rest of the world. But it's just an initial head up, after that it's work, practice, experimentation... and that initial superiority becomes less and less relevant.
@@akademischungebildet5564 Nope. Talent you have. Skill you develop. Proficiency is obtained through hard work. Gifted means progress happens at an accelerated rate. All can and do exist in the same person.
@@nhiko999 It's all about previous experiences, talent or gift doesn't exist. Our brain is complex and any knowledge can lead to many different advantages in all aspects of our life.
Wow, this sounds like what if a rock drummer played a jazz standard. I mean it as a compliment, it's super cool! Definitely has a rock feel, and it sounds great.
" If you've got to the end of this video "
Hell girl , couldn't take my ears off ,that is pretty
bloody impressive , thanks for the trip.
The fact she wanted to learn to play a Duke Ellington song gobsmacked me. In a purely excellent way. I watched this at lunch and the fact there are those in the next musical generation carrying on such great tradition is keeping me smiling all day.
Whiplash is a great film
@@Daniel-om4ceLol! It's a horrible film if you're a serious drummer.
@@elmhurst86 it's not about drumming
AMEN
@@pedrogarcia8706 Exactly!
I've been playing drums in bands and on recordings for over 50 years and I wouldn't even dream of attempting this. Well done Nandi. I would just like to add for all the aspiring new drummers out there who might feel after watching this, that they'd never be good enough. If you don't have Nandi's determination and commitment, it's not the end of the World. There are a lot of bad drummers around that are still making a living. So if you don't have the means to put all the hours in, just aim to be "good enough" and you will still be better than many. Don't give up!
Hey, don't need to sneak diss Lars .
@@jjhaya I came looking for this lmao 🤣
What I love about this song is that every artist adds his or her style to the music making it a different experience... It's just great!
Nandi has been putting out videos for about 4 years now. She plays drums, guitar (and bass) and keyboards. Her father is a musician and he encouraged her interests (Dad's out there - are you listening?) and she does not disappoint. She and Dave Grohl have challenged each other on drums and it was pure joy to watch them interact. She has so much personality and charm. Can't wait to see where her future takes her, but I'm looking forward to that ride. You're a free spirit, Nandi. Keep us all posted.
Wow.
Holy Cow.
Like 5 years ago I thought something like "yeah, another prodigy child on youtube,...".
But now... This caught me off-guard.
It's, seriously, astonishingly good!
I'm not talking about age at all, I'm talking about musicality, kick-ass playing, vibes and feeling, on a very, very high level! It's in no way like "she's good for a 13 year old" but "she's good for a drummer".
Absolutely cool!

It's crazy that she's technically so proficient, especially for her age. Yet there's places where you can hear the 13-year old sense of musicality, because there really is only so many years of musical experience, or life experience. It's natural, raw and her own style is only beginning to take shape. What an amazing thing to witness.
