- After last week's episode with new Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt, we knew we had to go up a level this week on the KOKO Show and that is exactly what we did.
On this week's instalment we are joined by the big dog in Rugby Australia's kennel. CEO Phil Waugh stops by to answer all the tough questions about the state of the game in Australia, as well as why Aussie rugby fans should be optimistic moving forward. The KOKO crew covered all the weekend's action from the third round of the ’Superb’ Rugby and we were lucky enough to be joined by the 'Sunshine State’s Sensei’ Queensland Reds head coach Les Kiss.

Great pod as always fellas. As an englishman living in Sydney i love taking my sons to the tahs and Australian rugby can easily get back to the glory days. What it needs is fellas like you doing this drawing people back to watching the super games and bringing money back into the game. Then its up to RA not to spunk it against the wall! If the people trust the administration then they wont mind paying the money! Looking forward to the shirts.

Drew mate, good on ya, it's the questions you've been waiting to ask, well done, we rugby fans, all of us, deserve answers to them, tip my hat to ya. I'm keen as for this year, was at an event where Joe was speaking, I came away with the feeling he wasn't about to retire, and there was something he couldn't tell us, nek Minit. Classy games in the Supers, competitive and exciting rugby, the real strength of southern hemisphere rugby is it's speed of play and intensity, and I watched England bump the work rate up against the Irish and force a win, just saying. Is the fact you guys drop just after the Aotearoa rugby pod intentional, or just another sign god is a rugby fan? Thanks team. Still waiting for my shirt.

I was at Suncorp for the Reds game, first super rugby game watched live! Great stadium and competitive game. One thing I would say about watching live vs watching on the screen at home, not hearing what the ref is saying in the stadium is one thing I believe should change. The ref has such a big influence on the game, like it or not, and for the crowd it's hard to know what is happening, especially if it's happening on the other side of the field from where you're sitting. I think this will bring more people to the stadium as well, hearing the interaction with the refs and players will get the crowd going and more into the action between the obvious tries and big tackles.
I have been to All RWCs since 2003 and back then you could buy at the ground a little radio which broadcast using an earpiece the ability to hear the commentary or Ref or commentator in one ear and Ref in the other..
NOW… 20 years later AND EVERYBODY HAS A PHONE…. There is zero interest by a tech Co reach into this space… for a fee..

I believed in Phil Waugh as a player so hopefully he puts RA on a good path. Les Kiss an interesting listen and always keen on the Reds doing well - weird this week with them facing the Rebels and Salakaia-Loto, Daugunu and Tupou; players who did some good things for the Reds.

What about the grassroots of Rugby in Australia? I would’ve loved to hear more about grassroots and development opportunities through to Super Rugby. I believe this is what Rugby League does better than Union.

Good questions by Drew - he's proven to be very good at cutting through the noise and nailing the issues that actually matter. I only wish he didn't let Phil Waugh off the hook - I don't think he answered any of the questions; unless one considers chuckling about how tough it is, etc. I'm keen to give him a chance, but he needs to realise that the fans won't cop any more of the corporate yoga babble. His joking about his inexperience in sports administration highlights his abject lack of relevant experience to be a CEO of an organisation that comprises 6 elite professional teams AND a community game of 100,000 people. Is there another sport in the world give such a job to a bloke with a few years experience as an account manager for a bank? Wrexham AFC has a far more experienced management team and they're 4th division! If Rugby Australia was a serious organisation, it would have serious people running the show - Waugh needs to sort himself out very quickly and be that somebody or move along and get a real job.

To get RA's cost/income ratio to say 80% from what now must be well over 100%, should we not hold two Lions tests in Sydney and one in Brisbane (same as in 1989) ... focus on the rugby heartland states and minimise unnecessary logistics costs (to Melbourne or Perth)?

The biggest thing still holding all aussie clubs back is the ticket pricing. All the pre-season rural matches for the Reds were dope. Also melbourne was a terrible host for super round, crazy small turnouts.
