Can Mario Complete Dry Dry Ruins Without Any Keys?

- 93 frame-perfect inputs later, we've got a new glitch video!
I needed to make a TAS to show this off reasonably, and wanted to give a better overview of Loading Zone Storage (LZS) before diving into the challenge.
Applications of LZS are pretty versatile. It is usually used to exaggerate Mario’s angle during a room fade-out, which gets remembered by the game, and gets reapplied as Mario walks into the next room. I think this occurs because the developers wanted room transitions to appear a bit more seamless - if the screen fades while Mario is off-center, the screen reappears with Mario walking from that same angle. Using LZS to amplify our entrance angle enough can make Mario fall out of bounds, and this is sometimes be used to skip sections of the game, or set up other glitches.
See Devon's video on LZS entrance skewing: • Loading Zone skews - P...
Another useful trait of LZS is the ability to combine certain actions with a room transition. Various in-game events differ in terms of priority, and loading zones are pretty high on that priority list. Sometimes, cutscenes or fights can be skipped using this.
The final application of LZS is the hardest to apply, and it’s actually the one we’ll be exploiting the most in this video. While a room is fading out, we have no control of Mario. He’s in a unique state however, where he phases through walls and other objects. It’s a tight window before that next room loads, and we can’t make any new inputs count, but we do know what direction he’ll be going... toward the loading zone we have stored. Dry Dry Ruins has a lot of convenient 2-story rooms, so we can store the bottom loading zone, do a few double frame-perfect jumps up top, and position Mario in front of the door we want to phase through. He’ll walk through the wall during the fade out, and the newest loading zone we touch will take priority. Dry Dry Ruins is somewhat unique in having a loading zone behind each door, because they aren’t truly doors; they’re more like sliding panels. So, this wouldn’t work on just any door, such as the ones in Koopa Bros. Fortress. This can be used to skip most of the keys in the Dry Dry Ruins.
Skipping the last key is a bit more tricky though, requiring the use of Lakilester.
Despite appearing paper-thin, Mario typically has a cylindrical hitbox. We’re going to use Lakilester to obtain “clippy,” a state where Mario’s hitbox is fragmented, only appearing as a flat plane in the direction we’re moving. Clippy naturally exists when Mario’s side boundaries need to be disabled, such as when on a partner - the developers didn’t want Mario’s hitbox pushing Lakilester or Sushie around while we’re controlling them. And the clippy state gets disabled once we hop off.
There are a few ways to preserve clippy though, and we’re going to do it by entering a battle with a menu up. If we hit the block to aggro the Pokey Mummies, we can hop on Lakilester to enable clippy, and open an overworld menu the same time we trigger an encounter. The timing on opening the item or partner menu is sort of misleading, and frame-perfect. Done right, the memory pertaining to clippy will not be stored during the battle, which means clippy will not be deactivated when we get off Lakilester by switching partners. With our abnormal hitbox, it’s fairly simple to angle Mario up-left against the lock, gradually maneuvering up-right until he turns around, and is pushed far enough into the loading zone behind it.
I also show off a few other tricks and glitches that are by no means required to complete Dry Dry Ruins without any keys, but still save time in a speedrunning setting.

I’ve been trained to think he was going to say that checking behind the bush crashes paper mario
If you look closely kooper wasn't his partner at the time so it couldn't be that broken
You know what *did* crash Paper Mario though? For whatever reason, during the livestream when he was building the TAS, killing the Pokey with Thunder Rage crashed the game, so he had to run away instead.
@Jakub Seidl So, killing a Pokey Mummy with Thunder Rage crashes Paper Mario 🤔?

"In order to avoid collecting all the keys in dry dry ruins, we need Lackilester".
Ah yes, the perfect speedrun strat - completing 80% of the game in order to skip chapter 2.
I mean, Stryder's shown glitches for skipping all sorts of things, so I'm pretty sure there's an Early Lakilester glitch (and/or early chapter 6) in one of his vids.
Not sure if it's still the case, but in one point this was done in the All Cards speedrun, since it's faster to do Blue House Skip and come back.
papermariorta.fandom.com/wiki/Blue_House_Skip
Clipping into the locked blue house in Toad Town to reach the deep end of the sewers grants early access to the blue pipe to chapter 5, which can be completed without Bow or super boots, and without Watt by clipping through the background to reach the volcano early (see czcams.com/video/3oxjPccdLZc/video.html). Giving the vase to Kolorado, and checking the bub-ulbs on Mt.Rugged, Forever Forest (which is no longer roadblocked when the game is forced into a chapter 5 or post-chapter 5 state), and Toad Town is sufficient to unlock chapter 6. Assuming you picked up Parakarry and Sushie on the way you should be able to reach Lakilester without trouble.

@Puppet Kinda like skipping Anti-Guy fight to beat Anti-Guy in a traumatic way.

“Gotta save those frames!” Also literally going to chapter 6 just to complete this.
Even when doing stuff in a way that isn't speed running, you are always speed running.
That's okay, you only visit Chapter 6 for a few minutes and then it gets reset when you go back to 2
Also like he said you can instead use one of the easily obtainable keys from the start of the ruins instead of going to chapter 6 for the clippy glitch
If you were doing a glitched all chapter run, going out of your way to grab lackilester could still very well be a lot faster.
Even if you do a run that allows starting later chapters, but requires completing then in order, it might still be faster.
I can hear Roxas saying this

"Yeah, you know, in between all these double-frame perfect clippy techniques, we can also jump off this ledge instead of running off so we can use Bombette faster. Why? Oh you know... *_Gotta save those frames!_* "

I didn't even get to the ruins at the time. lol
This was actually the only part I needed help with until I figured out years later and then the game was easy to beat.

I appreciate the extensive LZS description in this vid; i generally gleaned what the tech was and did from the other videos using it but having a full-on description for it is super nice and enlightening for actually fully understanding the tricks

I second this. Stryder didn't need to give a thorough explanation of the glitch, but he still went the extra mile and explained it to us. He's amazing.
I love how casually he says "frame-perfect"
People who explore games for glitches or speedrun have the timing or tools and patience to get it.
It's like people who can grind out a Shiny Pokemon but technically much more impressive.
This is a TAS, he doesn't have to perform the jumps manually
+Finluz He’s just broken after the pixel-perfect and sub-pixel-perfect tricks.
@@iamliam42 to his credit, he's shown that he knows how to frame perfect
A decent speedrunner can pull off a frame perfect input, or a pixel perfect input. A frame perfect + pixel perfect input is a lot harder, but I've seen several good speedrunners doing them.
But for the LZE, you need a ton of frame perfect inputs in a row.
RIP old glitchy intro, u had a good run
A legend, well shall await your return.
Well, you're the one making the video so my guess is yes, with only a casual 587 frame-perfect jumps and 19 sub-pixel perfect maneuvers.
P.S. I absolutely love your videos. You can take the most confusing and convoluted things and explain it to the point where 7-year old me playing this game for the first time would understand.
I still cant understand having a friendly conversation crashes paper mario though.

The explanations in this video helped me truly understand some of the glitches after seeing them so often in your videos
Even though it's painfully obvious performing all of these tricks in sequence is TAS only (for now)... I appreciate you taking the time for newer viewers to clarify just how INSANELY difficult this route is to replicate so streamers don't get bugged with questions like "Hey how come you aren't skipping Dry Dry Ruins with no keys like in Stryder's vid?" It's good to occasionally remind people that if a human actually ever did this legitimate it may as well put them in the Guinness Book of World Records. I feel like with the amount of segmented and TAS runs getting as big as they are, people are starting to forget the difference between RTA and TAS (the more casual viewers that is). If that line gets too blurred I feel it'd desensitize a lot of the newer/less informed viewers to all of the awesome feats that real-time runners do every day. Sorry for the rant haha.
It's quite cute this intro, keep up the great job stryder.
