Can Mario Defeat Bowser in 1 Turn? (feat. Bird650)

  • Final Bowser is a surprisingly difficult boss in Paper Mario, which is to be expected from the game’s last battle. He has 99 health and 2 defense. But still, can he be defeated in a single turn? I invited Bird650 to help me answer that question!
    The final Bowser fight is separated into 2 phases. Phase 1 is somewhat scripted; Bowser cannot die even if he reaches 0 health. But, Mario and his partner are free to chip away at his health during the first two turns. On turn 1, Bowser will attack, randomly choosing between his Fire, Claw, and Stomp abilities. At the end of turn 2, Bowser doubles his attack power and becomes invincible with Star Shield. Mario’s Star Beam was said to remove Bowser’s Star Shield, but the phase ends when it fails, and all seems lost.
    After a long cutscene that upgrades Star Beam and heals Mario, phase 2 begins. Bowser retains the same health pool, so any damage dealt to him earlier carries over. Now starts the real final battle, where Bowser can actually lose. He still has the same shield from the first phase though. Star Beam, now called Peach Beam, is able to remove Final Bowser’s invincibility. This takes up Mario’s first turn, and our only hope at defeating Bowser on turn 1 is with a partner.
    That’s hard to manage, but it is possible with enough damage in phase 1. There are a few ways to approach this, but most will utilize some combination of the Ultra Boots (3 base damage), both Power Plus badges (+2 damage), All or Nothing (+1 damage), P-Up, D-Down (+1 damage), Mega Rush (+4 damage while in Peril), Merlee’s Spell (+3 damage when it activates), Watt’s Turbo Charge (+1 damage for a few turns), and Power Bounce (deals immense single target damage, scaling with attack power). If Mario can manage 2 solid Power Bounces in phase 1, gets 2 strong partner moves in, and avoids Bowser’s attack to maintain Mega Rush’s damage boost, we can deal tons of damage. This sets us up for a turn 1 kill in phase 2.
    The problem is, it’s not a perfect strategy. Power Bounce allows you to jump on enemies repeatedly until you mistime one of your hits. There is a hard limit at 101 jumps on a single target - more than enough to K.O. every enemy and boss in one turn. However, a lot of RNG (luck) was implemented to discourage this. Power Bounce is still extremely overpowered with boosted attack power, but the damage potential is inconsistent, especially on bosses.
    The developers used a formula to limit Power Bounce’s lethality on tougher enemies. A random “cap” can force Mario to stop a Power Bounce early, even if you timed the jump perfectly. Every enemy in the game has an unacknowledged Power Bounce property, which factors into the formula and determines the chances of getting capped. To no one’s surprise, the final iteration of Bowser is the most unforgiving of them all. Jdaster64 has more information here:

      I hope you don’t mind me pinning this comment just to help clarify this! It’s a bit confusing, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the final Bowser fight itself.
      Whether or not we actually beat him in “1 turn” depends on how you look at it. There are 2 completely separate phases, and the game treats these like different battles.
      Phase 1, Bowser becomes invincible. You have 2 chances to attack before this happens. Even if you “beat” Bowser in Phase 1, the show must go on. He will never die. The only way forward is by trying the move Star Beam while he’s powered up, and since that no longer works, we are destined to lose. A couple cutscenes turn things around though!
      Phase 2 starts after that break, and is different. This time, we can actually win if Bowser gets knocked down to 0 health. And a Turn 1 kill is possible! This is because Bowser’s health pool is carried over from phase 1. Any damage we did in the earlier fight will still be useful.
      If you do enough damage in the first phase, you can kill him on Turn 1 in the second phase. This is the fastest you can possibly kill him, and it takes a solid strategy to pull off. It’s also very luck-based.
      The video explains the mechanics of Bowser’s AI and Power Bounce and how that information allows us to come up with these strategies, which may be used in speedruns and challenge runs.

      @@d3-ll754 Pretty much, and this was a thought experiment on how we could do the fight in as few turns as possible. Turns out you can also *theoretically* deal 99 damage to him in 1 turn if you get insanely lucky with Power Bounce, but that makes no difference in Phase 1. You'd likely have to manipulate RNG to even see that happen too, and that's another topic of its own

    What happens if you forcibly trigger a "defeated" state on Prologue Bowser using hacks? Can he even be defeated by only hacking your damage output to ludicrous amounts?

    • @fatforceremorse
      @fatforceremorse Před 4 lety +11

      To my knowledge from playing around in an emulator once, the game locks up if you defeat prologue Bowser. When he uses star shield in that fight, the programmers simply increase his defence by one which is enough to make all of Mario's moves do no damage but if you hack Mario's attack power to be higher, you can beat him.
      Why it crashes, I presume because there is no information in the game's code for what to do if you win that fight since you are supposed to lose for the following cutscene to trigger. After all, you aren't supposed to be able to win so I suppose they didn't need to program anything for that outcome.i'm no expert though.

      @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 Před 4 lety +7

      @@fatforceremorse I have a bit of a more involved theory, based on other crashes found by Stryder7x. The battle system probably has an internal mechanism put in place for the developers to allow special enemies to override the standard Game Over and enemy defeated sequences. Prologue Bowser is one such enemy, that overrides the Game Over (so you don't just lose), but doesn't override the enemy defeated sequence. The devs also probably don't check if Bowser was indeed not defeated before starting the original cutscene (they just coded the cutscene to begin after battling Bowser, since you're supposed to be unable to defeat him anyway) As a result, when defeating Prologue Bowser, two cutscenes play at once (the standard enemy defeated + Prologue Bowser kicks Mario out). The enemy defeated cutscene getting rid of Bowser's sprite, in turn, causes the regular cutscene to crash the game.

      @@3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 I seem to remember the game instantly breaks the moment you deal the fatal damage to Bowser, it cuts to a static screen of the sky where the floating castle is. Could be an emulator thing though, N64 with a cheat device maybe reacts differently.

    I just wanted to know you that I've been following your CZcams Videos for more than a year now, and you have become probably my favourite youtuber of all time. Your videos are just amazing and I can feel how much you love these games. I've been playing Paper Mario since the first game came out, specially SPM which was my favourite and watching someone who actually gives this games as much love as you do... It's just an amazing feeling. (English is not my first language so I cannot express as I would like to, but I just hope you get the message)
    I just wanted to let you know that CZcams wouldn't be the same for me if it wasn't because of you, and I hope you keep making this kind of videos. I know they will end someday and I don't want to put pressure on you (I'm a random teenager after all lmao) but I just feel like I needed to tell you this. Really looking forward to watching more of your content in the future :D

    • @Bladius_
      @Bladius_ Před 4 lety +3

      If I remember correctly, each badge is unique and is coded so multiples do nothing.
      For example, "Power Plus" badge is assigned a unique value; lets's say you copy the "Power Plus" from Shyguy's toybox and it's identifier is "001", the copy would also have that identifier. It can be equipped but has no effect after the first one.
      It's mentioned in Stryder's "most elaborate glitch" video.

    @christopherosborne4381 Před 4 lety +2

    Good video! I'm a total math nerd and love this kind of stuff.
    As a bit of a point of clarification, when the chart is shown at 8:37, the column that reads "% chance to continue bouncing" should probably read "cumulative % chance to continue bouncing", as the odds shown are representative of a cumulative percentage rather than independent trials at that point.
    An interesting extra that would be fun to know would be the expected value of the number of jumps. It isn't too hard to calculate; just a bit time consuming since you can't generalize the formula until jump 9. A real close value for the expected number of jumps is about 3.653 (I rounded and also stopped chugging numbers on my phone calculator on jump 8, as all jumps after 9 have a really low chance and are negligible), which means most trials will end on the 3rd or 4th jump, but you're ever so slightly skewed towards the 4th jump. This makes sense, as (barely) over half the trials get to jump #4 or more. Further, the probabilities of stopping on higher jumps (up until jump 8) are not negligibly small, and bring the value up a tad due to the jump number being higher despite the lower probability.
