    We had push and self propelled reel mowers. With them, the grass should be relatively dry unless you mow frequently to keep it trim. long wet grass is a mess to mow anyway. Reel mowers don't like sticks. rotary mowers just toss them aside. They are also very vulnerable to rust. It will seize the blades. But a really well kept, well lubed reel mower on rye or even bermuda makes a wonderfully evenly cut look..

    I have a massive back yard and uses a ride-on mower for that. For my front yard, because it's smaller, i use one of those 18" reel mower. I'm going for a golf course type front yard and reel mowers are great for that because you can go down looooooow!!!! Plus my wife calls me fat and that i need to workout so this will be my workout.
    BTW.....reel mowers are great for mowing wet grasses, unlike the rotary type

It worked great as long as you kept the blades sharp but if you didn't your life was hell. try cutting grass that's over your knee-high with a normal home gas one and then a hand mower, shocking how easier the hand mower takes it down

    Great vid. I just spotted one of these used for less than $30. I'm trying to see if I can scoop it up for $20. I plan to convert it to an RC reel mower. I'm already converting a Fiskars 18in reel mower into an RC reel mower. I previously converted a John Deere JS45 with swivel wheels into an RC rotary mower, and I've been using it for 3yrs now, and it's been super great. I'm trying to switch to RC reel mowing because I like expending as little energy as possible while mowing, and also because it is healthier for my lawn. I'm considering gifting the RC Remington reel mower to my somewhat elderly neighbor to help ease his mowing efforts.

    Seeing you struggle a bit at 7:15, I have to bear in mind that this grass is soaking wet and almost flattening as you push over it. But, that mower still did a damn good job for the price of it. I've just taken down from the attic, my 40 year old Qualcast (UK) reel/cylinder push mower, where it's been for 21 years. Cleaned up not too bad considering the attic is not watertight in the house, so, a bit of rust and paint flaking. All greased up and oiled, the only thing to complete the job is backlapping the blades and I should be good to go.

    • @WhosAGoodDogue
      @WhosAGoodDogue Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @@ashleybrown4450 - Hello! Apologies for the late reply. To wipe down the reel mower after taking it from the attic, I just used a cloth soaked in WD-40. That took all the dust off. I gave the blades on the reel a very light brush of fresh car engine oil (unused clean oil, basic 10w/40), but any clean oil will do). Left that for a minute and wiped it off (don't want too much oil on the blades when cutting the grass).
      I removed the wheels (to get at the nylon gears behind) by popping off the metal 'hub cap', removing the E-clip, and sliding off the wheel. Applied some EP2 Grease to the gearing and re-assembled (it's what was in the garage, but could also have used my red motorcycle grease (Silkolene ProRG2). But, all in all, no fancy or expensive lubricants are required as it's not a high tech machine, nor one that is under heavy load.
      I have a can of ''ACF-50'', which is a fantastic product that I use on my motorbike. It's anti-corrosive and leaves a long lasting protective film. I used that on all the nuts and bolts and the reel adjuster springs, but good old (and reliable) ''3-in-One'' penetrating oil would do just as well.
      I hope this helps. Sorry it's a bit long, but will finish by saying: don't let repair shop or 'die-hard' lawnmower people sell you fancy lubricants or recommend expensive grease in a huge tube that will take you 20 years to use. All you need is a can of WD-40 or 3-in-One, and a teaspoon size splodge of grease on each wheel gear. It could be basic white grease, or black grease (used for ball joints or bearings in cars). As long as it helps reduce the friction between the plastic gear and the plastic wheel, then all is good.
      All the best. Dogue.

    The traditional design of reel mower is that the cutting action is like scissors. It would take more effort to push because of the frictions. And you'll see a few tall grasses sticking out like a sour thumb. If I re-design the reel mower, I would do the following: It should cut with speed like a weed whacker cut with a nylon string. The reel blades should be all straight not twisted. The reel shaft should be equipped with ball bearings on both ends. The blades are made of alloy steel hardened to RC60. The bottom fixed blade should be eliminated to avoid twigs getting stuck in there.
    The traditional push mower will cut much better if the reel blades are sharp and do not make contact with the bottom fixed blade. Push it at faster speed and you won't see sour thumb sticking out behind the track.

    My gas mower needed a new deck, carb, and tune up. I also live where 87 octane is $6.00 a gallon or very near it. So I said the heck with it and chose electric. Battery to be exact, I chose the Stihl 510 battery push mower. The reason for the stihl is for its low noise, low voltage. 36 at 7.5 AH, yet long running time. The other models have 60 to 80 volts. They run at a noise level, equal to the exhaust side. Of a turbine engine, at full output. Example Toro and Worx nitro. Again my stihl is much much more quieter. I cut the front lawn with a fully charged battery. I used half of the single battery's charge. To cut the front lawn, take it into effect that my lawn was 4" tall. Dry, now 1" tall when cut. Would have otherwise used a full tank of gas. On my 5.5 hp Briggs mower.

    By 2:00 I was concerned. I had a feeling his removal of the body would result in the blades moving and his fingers would be in the way, and then he wanted to toss the directions. *Cringe*

    89.99 and it wasn't electric? Such a bad deal. There's decent enough electric ones in the UK for ÂŁ65

    • @kumoryuu
      @kumoryuu Pƙed 2 lety

      Yeah, maybe corded ones. The battery-powered mowers I've seen tend to be upwards of ÂŁ150 or they're like the Karcher models where the battery is sold separately and costs more than the mower itself.
      Not saying 90 USD is a great deal, I don't think it is, but push mowers are generally much cheaper than electric ones. And I don't particularly trust Fly-Mo.
