I have MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and had optic neuritis once; I went blind in my left eye for six weeks. I went from perfect vision to 3% vision in my left eye over just three hours. It. Was. TERRIFYING. These people seem to have dealt with quick onset full blindness better than I did with partial blindness, that’s for sure!
EDIT: I am so sorry I didn’t include this, and I feel like a fraud. Partial vision was back in two months with intense steroid therapy, as full as it’s gonna get vision came back about six months after that, again with intense steroid therapy. I have 92% vision right now. My eye that was blind now drifts if I’m not intensely focusing (which means double vision) and glasses can’t help because it’s neurological. But I’m here and doing the best I can. 😊

😤 I remember the wife in this movie INFURIATED me when I saw this. She could see the ENTIRE time and instead of taking lead in that place she willingly gives herself and other women up to be violated FOR DAYS (yes more than once)? There was like another half hour of movie before she finally offed that guy and took control.
She only hid her sight from the authorities so she could stay with her husband, but once inside why keep hiding it?! It’s not like anyone is going to kick her out (on the chance it’s contagious).
Ugh.
Exactly, why VOLUNTEER to be violated while basically being a super human???

Am I the only one that seen that table blink into existence?
No but its to add effect I’m sure
i think it was meant to represent that when you are blind, you visualised the position of the table in a certain place. but once you bumped into it, you then realised that the position was wrong, and get an instant update of where the table is (more like where u are) instead.
My vision is terrible but I am so glad I can see. I already stumble and bump into everything and I don't have much depth perception but I don't think I could survive being blind.

Blind people: JACKPOT!
Deaf people: Aight imma just die
For everyone wondering why the doctor's wife didn't kill that guy sooner, and instead gave herself and other women to be sexually abused, it has actually to do with a central dilemna and theme of the story. In the book, she is constantly debating with her husband and with herself about telling the others that she can see. The doctor is afraid the blind people are going to become even more dependent on her and she'll stress herself to death trying to help everyone., instead of just the both of them. Same reason that people obey the blind man with the gun at first, even if they are many and he is one. Because some will die in the attempt and nobody wants that for themselves.
In the end, they end up uniting themselves and accepting that some will die in the war with ward 3. As for the doctor's wife, she accepts that she can't save everyone and instead gives her all for the group of characters that she "adopts" and finds an equilibrium.
Also, fun fact: an Essay on Blindness has a sequel called Essay on Lucidity, where everyone in the same country gives a blank vote during election day, so that no party is elected. The government puts the whole city under siege and, because they need someone to blame, start targeting the doctor's wife and her group, connecting the blindness pandemic and the null vote event to them and painting them as terrorists, because she kept her sight while nobody else did. And, if I remember correctly, because she never went public with her imunity to the blindness.

I liked this movie up until the guy with the gun was involved. The doctor's wife is pretty useless. Could have immediately disarmed the thugs or stolen the attackers' food without anyone even knowing what happened. You are surrounded by people who suddenly got blind, not born blind.
I think the accountant serves to remove that option since he's more attuned to his surroundings.
I would have just poisoned the other ward's food. 😶

Such a gaping plot hole that seems to be invisible to the vast majority of this comment section. i have hard this exact nightmare a couple of times when i suddenly go blind
Everyone is told to stay inside and the government doesn't know what it's doing. Sounds mighty familiar...
Except we know exactly why we were told to stay inside. Idiots don’t learn, though.
Unbelievably good book!
This movie and Children of Men were very impactful in my youth.
This could be a prequel to the See tv series. I know it’s not, but you COULD see it as such. Pun intended of course
Just what I was thinking
I get humans so yes it's accurate but nope I'm vision impaired i 've practiced doing things blindfolded and yes full blindness you don't know how dirty things are if you can't feel it so stains but you can still fully clean also you can cook etc and use rest rooms so brail is the hardest part of it to learn.
But most blind people still poses a little sight like mine is loosening focus until I can't use corrected lenses but still will be able to navigate using general color and shape as I'm not loosening light or my eyes though I do need sunglasses already as it strains my eyes to much to be in full light. Frankly as no other symptoms I would be one to actually want to get infected as going blind is hell.
The problem with this movie is that it was adapted from a book which was meant more as a philosophical thesis about human nature told through an allegory than an actual story. So it kind of lost its meaning along the way, it was never meant to be a realistic story about people with visual disabilities.
You're right Tyto, but just imagine having to adapt to blindness in an apocalypse with zero assistance. I think I'd be barely able to hold back panic attacks, let alone maintain my hygiene.
i love your present voice ngl

Blindness
I think I read this book. 🤔 It was a book where each chapter has one long paragraph with only periods separating each sentence. No way to know which sentence is a thought or a spoken one. Story was good but very hard to read as no quotations were used when someone is talking.
Oh no! But at least the story is good though.
That's the authors style of writing. It's actually one of the things that makes his work more recognized and interesting.
7:21 I thought this was just a glitch. I see many people came to rewatch that too.
Man I’m blind and I really feel what blind people feel
How did you type????
You would get the word arong
I thought it’s a bad movie. To summarise, people went blind, were quarantine, struggled and probably got their eyesight back. However, this movie shows a couple of truth.
One is you really don’t care about tidiness when you are blind because you can’t see anyways which is…… sad?
Another is the woman could see but she kept it a secret. This shows people tend to stay silent until the very last minute. It shows that we humans are selfish and we want to save our butt and we don’t raise our voice (even if we see that wrong things going on) until the damage has been done. She could have prevented the assault if she wanted if only she speak up sooner
Concepts of exploitation, control and power, teamwork and empathy. Nice movie
how would that have prevented anything
In reality, tidiness can be really important for a blind person, because otherwise stuff becomes really hard to find. You can't look around for it, right? If you always put stuff in the right place, then you always know where it is.
That's where this lost me as blind people have to be very neat so they always know where everything is and don't trip over stuff.
So are you happy or dissatisfied with the movie my guy, which one is it?
With increased stress and anxiety my eyesight can go away slightly or look like a tube television with a bad antenna. Not at a lot like in this movie being completely blind but can be scary when driving(happened to me once or twice). Glad I watched this video good to put things into perspective!
I'm glad that at the end, they managed to get frisky with each other
