Recessed Can Shelf - Using Unusable Space For Cans

- We took an unusable pantry wall and built recessed, internal shelves between it's studs to make a sort-of hidden can shelf rack. It holds over 100 cans and is clearly the greatest can storage shelf rack built since 1980. At least we think so.
The recessed shelves were necessary because the pantry is narrow and could not support shelving, or really anything else, on that wall. But now the wall is a major storage unit and all of our cans are easily visible and accessible. We've only had these new shelves for a few days and we are already in love with them!

We build a lot of weird things. Check out our other videos and subscribe to the channel if you want to see what we are working on next!
Showing your mistakes and sharing your lessons learned are the best part of your videos.
Thanks! The only reason we are any good is because we've learned from our mistakes, and we share the good and the bad for that very reason!
Glad I saw this. Want to remove drywall to make a wall pantry and didn't realize how dusty it will be! TY!
Glad I could help! Put up plastic to contain the dust because there will be a lot!
Can you ude a shop vac hose while cutting drywall?
"The answer is simple. I'm stupid." LOL! That's great. And what a great idea to make use of unusable wall space. Well done!
It's true. We make mistakes and we show what we did wrong. I often tell people the only reason I'm good at certain things is because I have already made every mistake possible!
Ok u are hilarious. "We use motion sensor switches because we are lazy". You made my day.
It's absolutely true! A large percentage of our projects were built because we wanted to simplify or automate some mundane task. But motion sensors in closets rock and now we never want to live without them!
This is great and I love your humour 😂
Thank you! This modification has seriously cut down the clutter in the pantry, and we use it pretty much every day!
Well Done!! Now come do my wall shelf! Lol!
We wish we could! But our to-do list is already way too long!
You crack me up
Love this am try it my galley kitchen is very small
You should! It has saved so much space in our pantry!
Love your idea and your personality and your style. Fun and helpful! Thanks..
Thank you! We try to have fun, and it's a lot of fun to punch holes in sheet rock with a hammer!
Amazing!!! You are hilarious!
Glad you enjoyed!
I like your humor! 😂 And the cleaver projects!
Thank you! We like to have fun while building cool stuff!
Love it! Great sense of humor, too!
I’m going to try this. Except, I’m going to use heavy duty cardboard and cover it with contact paper. Much easier for me!
Great idea! These shelves have been real game changers for us, freeing up a lot of space on the shelves. You will love yours too!
Ty for the killer tutorial! I built the folding table and and now this and all the neighbors who see it think it’s sooo siick!
Excellent!!! So glad you are building our designs. Stick with us and we'll make you sicker! Not really...
Genius. I REALL need this. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
now build another one on the opposite wall and an open "cabinet" on the back wall for chips/box food etc. Trust me it will be great
We would except that wall borders a bathroom. We're gonna leave that one alone...
Thanks for sharing.
Happy to do it. We love to build things!
This guy is amazing. Great job!
Thank you!
This is a great video for alot of reasons... thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! We still love using those embedded shelves, but I still want to hit a wall with a hammer again!
Did you use any brad nails or anything on the cabinets? Is just the glue enough to hold all those cans?
Just glue. We don't have a brad nailer but have found that wood glue is plenty strong for most jobs like this.
This is awesome!
Thanks! We use it every day and love it!
Pretty awesome Idea. Looks great 👍
Glad you like it! We use it every day and it really works well!
Great idea and great job
Thank you! We continue to love these shelves!
Awesome dude Awesome
Thank you! We still use these shelves daily and they have seriously decluttered the pantry!
Very cool project. I plan to do something similar. Just an FYI, though - most studs are 16" OC (on center), not 16" apart. A nominal 2x4 is actually 1.5 x 3.5 inches as you mentioned. Since each stud is 1.5 inches wide, you have 0.75 inches of each stud contained in the 16" measurement. 2 x 0.75" = 1.5". 16" - 1.5" = 14.5", which is what you were measuring. Your studs are still 16" OC.
You are completely correct and I stand corrected! I should have figured that out before I made a video. But I'm glad you will be doing the same thing. You will not be disappointed!
@@AtomicDairy Thank you! Yours looks great; I hope mine turns out the same... ;)
Let's get started... bam, bam, bam!!! Love it. The cake is a lie!
Thanks! Not everyone gets our humor so we're glad you liked it!
This is a great video.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Great idea thanks! I just have to keep in mind, since I live in a townhouse, not to do this on a wall I share with my neighbor 😁
Agreed. What is on the other side of the wall matters. The other wall in that pantry is a bathroom, which is why we didn't use that wall.
Awesome!!!
Thanks!! These shelves have turned out to be extremely useful to the point that we never have enough cans to fill them up!
@@AtomicDairy I'm sure they have , I can't wait to make some for the bathroom ! Great video once again
Awesome idea and I loved the motion sensor lighting, made me laugh. Good job :)
Glad you liked it! We love our motion sensors and miss them when we use closets that don't have them!
Love the helmet, bro!
Its actualy lou-ahn. Luane, loo-ahhn. Or a quick loo- then wahn, luane.
Thanks! Just finished improving said helmet!
I opened my wall just to see if there were pipes ect in there. Once I did, I felt so much air. Once I put backer board ect, will that seal the air leaks or do I need to do more to insulate the area?
"Let's get started"
*Smash* *Smash* *Smash*
It seemed like the best way to start...
Funny shit bro 😂😂😂
Many thanks! We act just like that off camera too!
Id take a different route, but love your video. Lol
Thanks! 😃
Love the honesty! Q for you. Why didn’t you just add a back board and add shelves to the studs directly instead?
Thanks! Do you mean a back board on top of the studs? The passage is super narrow and that would have blocked the way. So we took the shelves into the wall instead.
@@AtomicDairy I meant a back board between the studs? And put shelves in between that way? With pegs in the studs themselves?
Ah. We did talk about doing that and making the shelves adjustable. We decided to keep it simple for this first embedded shelf effort and learned a lot. If we do this in the future we'll likely put in a header, remove the studs entirely, and use pegs like you suggest but in thinner boards. But even this version has turned out to be wildly popular in the pantry and we no longer have cans on our other shelves.
@@AtomicDairy Still great. Just wondering about your train of thought. So I can use it for my shelving needs.
@@angellas.1314That is what I am thinking of doing keeping the studs in a 7 foot span wall adding shelf’s to the studs. Also adding to the outside wall for a deeper shelf.
Is that a plane capt. helmet or a faded ordy helmet?
We have several. The green one was used by my father who flew A-7s. when up on the flight deck. That helmet worked so well in the shop that we got two newer ones for regular use.
Subscribed shipmate! I wish I made it off the flightdeck with my helmet :(
Welcome! The helmets are great and we really love them! Recommend ebay to get one if you are wanting one again. They are super-useful in the shop!
Liked the video I would like to put some shelves between the wall studs myself. Subscribed. Hey would you like to come to North Pole Alaska and build some for me?
Glad you liked it and welcome to the channel! I would LOVE to come up to North Pole to help you out, but I've been there before and am concerned that you locked up the Santa statue inside a barbed wire cage.
Your studs are standard. 16" stud spacing is on-center. That's not the space between. The standard void space for 16" on center studs is 14.5'. Congrats, your house is per spec.
Good to know!
Helmet; check, ear muffs; check, dust mask; check, eyes who cares. At least your forehead can see.
Yeah, we're gonna fix that. I keep forgetting to lower the goggles!
