These guys had such a knack for putting out really solid well-written songs....and yet as good as they were, I don't believe they ever had a number one hit. Interestingly, many of the acts that had number one hits during H&O's heyday are long forgotten. These guys endure.

First view, first comment?! This never happens. I’m late for everything! I have *so* enjoyed watching *you* enjoy songs from my childhood & salad (college) days. Too many people dismiss ‘70s music as nothing but “Ugh, disco!” - some of which was awesome, BTW, such as Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” & “On the Radio” - although it was so much more than this one genre. (The lyric is “I’d pay the devil to replace her;” that is, sell his soul to have her back. Not in the sense of being gifted with a “replacement” for her, but to have her, specifically, placed with him again.

As you know I always do a recommendation, as a musician and D.J back in the day, I have 60 years of music experience of both playing and listening, but there is only one song that can bring me to tears and it's not rock/ blues/pop that I'm usually into, in fact it's classical. John Oats is sooo underated bc he was pushed to the back during the 80's MTV era. If you watche the videos from that era you can see how they put Daryl Hall to the front. Both have great voices, but I believe John Oates was completely underated bc blond, tall and blue eyed Daryl was what the ladies wanted I guess. Personaliy I prefer the barotone of John Oates & really wish we had heard him take the full lead on more songs, w/Daryl singing harmony only. Watch the live version 1976, She's Gone, and you'll see how great it was to have more of John's voice included. Wish they had stuck to that over the years.

It sounds to me like a Fender Rhodes electric piano, with a bit of vibrato, likely on the amp, rather than an organ on the intro, Harri, but mox nix, or macht nicht in the big scheme of things...great song and performance, and great choice for a reaction.
The horns and strings deliver somewhat percussive punches later in the song much like an organ comping in -for example- reggae.
    Cheers, mate. ;>D

Great song, if you want to continue this theme with your new favorite ELO, try “It’s Over” from the Out f the Blue album.
    Cheers.

I don't know 8f someone answered your question of why pay the devil but I'll answer it anyway. The price the devil will charge is extremely high. By saying he'll pay the devil he is saying that for what he wants, there is no price too high. He'll pay anything..

When Harri said "i feel like its building to something.." I thought "yep! It is" To one of the best crescendo notes ever by Darryl. Harri knows his music. 😉 H&O have a bunch of great hits. This, i think, is their best.
