  • Arguably the most important Ducati superbike since the iconic 916, the 1199 Panigale started a journey that’s brought us to the current V4 - the plaything of MotoGP riders.     Was my dads bike, he bought it in 2012, the most beautiful machine we've seen. It was his passion. He past away in 2020, me and my brother keep it as our greatest memory from our father. It's a great bike to ride even in todays standard and everytime I ride it I remember him and miss him. Just love it

    Nice talk. I’ve been daily-ing an 1199S since I bought it new in 2013. It’s been to every state in the US. Currently at 40k miles and have performed all the maintenance myself, so it’s become a bit of an old maid of sorts. Because the power doesn’t hit until 8k, it’s very docile and street-able especially with the electronic dampers set to mush. It’s fatal flaw is its resistant to lay over into the last 1/3 of lean deflection …as if you’ve hit the steering stop. It will happily flick all day until you arrive at fast deep Gymkhana -like twisties and then it will not fall over that last little bit unless you try to tear the handlebars from their pinch bolts. Still glad I bought it over the S1000, which bored me to death on test rides. It’s seen a few track days, but most of its life has been spent in the Los Angeles canyons. Yet to leave me stranded.       It is a narrow bike which needs a tad more commitment than conventional bikes the nearer you get to its limit.

      Is it hard to work on Ducati’s yourself??? Are they more difficult than Japanese bikes?

      @@joshsvoss difficult on the wallet perhaps since some parts are not stocked and need to be ordered from Ducati Italy, but no more difficult than any other motorcycles in terms of mechanics. In fact, single-side swingarm chain adjustments are much easier than traditional dual beam swingarms since Ducati uses an eccentric hub. Valve adjustments require a special tool to compress the intake valve seats and engine teardowns also require some specialty tools. Other than that, it's regular sockets, spanners and drivers. Consumables such as air and oil filters are widely available. Dyno tuning the bikes can be a bit trickier due to the ECM and electronics, but most shops know their way around.

    I have owned my 1199 panigale for 8 years. Its absolutely a keeper. Use it on special days and my diavel for a work horse 🤗
    Bought my 1199 with out intending to. Just went into the show room to waste a little time before my dental appointment. Saw it, loved it and bought it before my appointment 😂
    Then two weeks to make up done thing to tell the Mrs before it was delivered.

    My dad's got an 1199S Tricolore when it was new and Im so in love with that bike. Its such a special event each time he brings it out. One of my favourite Ducatis of all time

    I'm sure I bought one of the first "standard" 1199 Panigales. The "S" model was a bit more expensive, but I just didn't - and still don't - like the wires coming up out of the two front shocks. I had my bike before everyone else noticed the heat coming off the engine. No one at Abu Dhabi had complained about the heat and the resulting 3rd degree burns. What a bunch of weenies! Anyway, that was in 2012, and now, 33K miles and 12 years later I still have mine. The fun of riding it hasn't faded.

    Fascinating. Being able to put things in perspective in such an interesting way would not seemingly be that difficult but Neevsey is head and shoulder the best in the motorcycle space doing this. The lack of ego and fair handedness is to be complemented. More like this please.

    Thank you Mr. Neevesy for the Ducati article. I bought a 996S in 2000 that I absolutely love. Not the most powerful or that fastest, but after 23 years, it still makes me feel incredible. The sound and feel of high spec Italian bikes are hard to match. I am 65, but the 1 inch bar risers, bigger clutch slave and shorter gearing make the bike very ridable for me, though for shorter periods than before. Thank you so much for your wonderful commentaries.

    Even though I’m only 34, this one makes me feel old. I remember the outcry against the lack of trellis frame and how all the electric Nannie’s are killing the soul of the bike. It was right around that time I bought my 848 EVO (it was late 2011 and I still have it). Funny thing, is I’ve been opposed to the frameless bikes this whole time, but as of recently, found myself pining for a baby Panigale to add to the fleet.

      Do it, I’ve had an 899 from new and it’s been the best bike I’ve owned from almost 30 bikes over the years!
      Just had its 30,000 miles Desmo service yesterday, all good 👍
      Fantastic sweet handling thing, don’t be frightened to use them lots, ..ride em don’t hide em !

      @@1956colinb using it properly, well done! I’ve only heard great things about the Panigale’s, and now, can’t even remember what my reluctance was. The market is still pretty hot in my area and refreshing a 996 has tied up time and funds, but I would really like to try out an 899.

    I have a 1299S that I purchased late last year with only 1250 miles on the clock. It was completely underwater during Hurricane Ian :D Thought of it as an opportunity to work on something cool. The price was right, and I have to say that I have enjoyed every bit of the rebuild so far. Also learned what happens to magnesium engine covers when they get in touch with salt water lol

    Loved this one especially Neevesy. I went through most of the latter Ducati Superbikes (1098/1198/1199s) and have very happily landed with my 999s. In my opinion the 999 is the best of all the superbikes - way ahead of its time.
    In many respects I see the 999 as the pinnacle of the big twins. My 1199s was fantastic but of a totally different character with it's short stroke high-revver. Quite un-Ducati like!
    Loving these videos mate - just picked up a 2005 R1 thanks largely to your R1 flashback vid.

    This was my love since I saw your review neevesy, from Dubai, all those years ago. Back then I was poor and barely managed to get myself my 1st motorcycle. I though "I will never be able to buy it and even if I did, I wouldn't be able to ride it properly".
    7y later, I got mine1199S in white. I did touring with it (1200km/day), track days, even on technical carting tracks. I ride it in the city, line filtering is great.
    For touring it's loud and vibrations will get to you. For technical slow tracks you need very good clutch control. The more aggressive and bold you are with the bike, the better it performs. Frameless design gives incredible "wiggly" feeling when you push hard in the corners. You can feel everything. Under breaking it's incredible, the nose dive deep giving you a feeling of riding a supermoto.
    Now I still have it but I moved towards offroad riding. I plan to practice to get myself to the level where I can really push that bike again.

    I have a 1299s and it's an interesting bike for sure. Frameless design, 1285cc twin, dual underbody exhaust, single-sided swingarm, led headlights, forged wheels, ohlins suspension, m50 brembos, quickshifter and auto blipper, etc. Dead sexy looks. I do wonder about reliability but from 2k to 4.5k miles, mine has been problem-free so far.

    Many thanks for the article review, it was amazing. FYI: I own the baby panigale 899, which is maybe missing some perks from her big sister 1199, but in my opinion is way more suitable for everyday street riding and having fun outside of a track :)

    Thank you so much for your love for this sport. I fell in love with the Panigale since their introduction. I am fortunate enough to own a 2012 1199s. It is probably the most engaging Superbike/Supersport I've ridden. Besides some headshaking on fast bumpy sweepers, she is extremely stable. Even stable really deep on the brakes into a turn. Besides the heat, there isn't much to complain about for this 11 year old machine.😂

    I remember when it came out and all the news outlets said it was uncomfortable, and now many says it is very comfortable... I dont understand how moto-journalists can change it mind all of a sudden. I got to try one and I instantly clicked with it, the v-twin revved super high yet has plenty of torque and was not lumpy at all. And it was super comfortable, super high seat height but it was narrow so even shorties like me could flatfoot and the knee angle was not acute at all.
    The reach to the clip-ons was short and you did not need to stretch/lean over the fuel tank/air box which made it super comfy, basically very similar seat position like the mk1/mk2 d675(with the underslung exhaust) U sit on the bike instead like on most classical superbikes.
    When I tested it out I instantly could not belive what the moto journalists said, but they got me once more when the Triumph Thruxton R was launched, they said it was modern handling but with classical lines, yeah right it was slow turning and it requerex quiet a lot force to push it from side to side, my old bandit 600 mk1 with new tires and refurbished suspension felt more modern than that, ie like the street triples/mt09/duke 790/890 and that was not the case for the Thruxton R at all.

    Absolutely love hearing your insights from the motorcycle world of the early naughties, I was a young teenager then and 600cc sportsbikes were the absolute KING where as big displacement litre bikes were the preserve of the LUNATICS! 😳🤣🤣🤣 I own a K3 GSXR 1000 now and absolutely adore it, and I too lament the passing of the “sports bike era”! Just glad I lived through it and am reliving it in my adulthood now ha ha ha! Thanks for the fantastic vids and journalism and keep it all coming!

    Yeah- what a distinguished career. And, I always sensed that when something was awry - you'd hold back from excess judgement. "A small damping adjustment may just solve the ...." I appreciate the balance shared over decades. Really, a gift for us. The guy at Visordown seems to be creating some quality videos on bikes im interested in. Tuono 660 Factory won over the '22 or newer Ducati SuperSport 950 S. It was super close but at the end of the day- the 660 begs me to improve my ride, shorten times & heck- keep riding!

    Have an 1199 R - it is just the most beautiful bike. Cleaner than the new era with 'wings'. Sound is fantastic. Coming from a 2011 blade, I actually hated the Panigale when I first got it, felt lazy and like I was going to get bucked off it. Also generates a lot of heat, silly amount. But now, I absolutely love it now. Stuff does 'rattle' off it occasionally but it's staying in the garage.

    Great chat about Panigale’s Michael, they certainly were a landmark bike, I bought a new 899 in 2014, still have it now and it just had its 30,000 miles Desmo service yesterday, all good 👍
    I think it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned in almost 45 years and nearly 30 bikes, I’ve had most of the popular sports bikes of the day, RSV’s, Exup Yams, 3 Fireblades etc , some great bikes but none of them have got under the skin like the Ducati has, it’s just so Red and Italian and has a certain aura about it, to this day I don’t think any other bike looks as pretty 😍, even the V4 Panigale looks a bit “Boxy” and not as well proportioned.
    It’s all the better for not being chocked up with Euro 5 gubbins and I’ve got BST carbon wheels on it and a K-Tech dds shock so it’s pretty well sorted and is a cracking ride, just so precise and light handling on the road 😬
    I would love a 1299 Superleggera to keep it company in the garage but they are silly money unfortunately 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Great review as always.
    I had an 1199 for 4 years & only sold it as it had a Can Bus issue which was going to cost a lot to fix. Still regret selling it now though. It was angry, shook its bars a lot & you had to grab it by the scruff of its neck & ride the arse off it - but those things made it special. The S1000RR may have been able to produce faster lap times & was easier to ride but I found it boring after the Ducati. A super bike should scare you. A super bike should be a massive sensory overload. The Panagale is all those things but on of that a set of Termi’s & the appropriate map made it even better.

    I kinda like angry lol. I’ve owned many Ducatis including a 998 for 13 years and a 1198 for 4. I now own a 1199s which I’ve had for several years. It’s a beautiful bike that I will not sell even though I’m constantly disappointed with not having that mid range grunt anymore I’m used too with the old Skool ducs but I don’t miss hitting that rev limiter so quickly. I never fell in love with the 1198 for some reason, great engine but to your point the design seemed rushed and always in the shadow of the 998 which I regret selling every day. Used to buy MCN religiously every Wednesday since I was a little boy. Thanks for this and all that you have contributed over the years

    Great review but as an 1098s owner and had an 07 blade and a mate who had a exhaust underseat R1 non bigbang. Definitely would say the 1098 is not underpowered. I love it guess track rider you prefer closer to a high reving 4 cylinder. Me I love the pre panigale twin. As had 851 996 . 😊

    i love my 1199. i am 6'4 and its fine for a tall rider, i probably look like a giant on it but its great to ride and perfectly fine to commute if you know its strengths and weaknesses. Keep up the good work Michael making content.

    Good to hear you recount some of these road tests from the past and their backstories it’s fascinating.
    So I have question and I appreciate this is just for fun etc.
    If you were given a box fresh Superleggera V4 (234 hp 152.2kg dry weight with racing kit), how far back in time would YOU need to go in order to compete competitively with one of the best MotoGP riders / bike of that time. Next question which MotoGP bike / rider, and which track would you choose to give yourself a good chance of winning - the only thing you can change are the tyres.

    in a few weeks i have to decide between a 1199 tricolore and a 2018 v4s standard red. the 1199 is in my eyes the most beautiful duc but the dealers price is quite steep but the mile age is extremely low for a 2012 bike.
    did a quick test ride on the v4s already and man that thing is a rocket, plus all the advanced electronics......just damn
    but the 1199 has somewhat more heart and the classy V2
    still have a few weeks left to decide

    I love you vids , always great listening to your memories of testing bikes, so a question that's a bit left field for you, How was it when the 1500 Goldwing came along, were you around at the time, were you "lucky" enough to test it. Or did one of the "grown ups2 get to test it! lol (Cant be race bikes all the time can it?)

    I went from a well sorted K5 to a 1299 Panigale. Having test ridden a standard bike a couple of times and an S I ended up buying the standard and threw on full Öhlins suspension 💸💸💸 7 years later I still can’t justify the extra for a V4r (yet)

    Has anyone ever studied what happens to bikes that use the engine as a part of the bikes structure, compared to bikes with traditional frames, when they're involved in smashes? I was amazed when my MT07 was written off after a smash that was scary, and dangerous, but not fast. Bike journalists should be doing these investigations far more than they do. It's normally just headline stuff, like it's always been - that I really appreciate, but isn't the full story. Whoops, this is a bit off piste.     When production bikes come with 'Brembo monoblock calipers', 'Ohlins suspension', 'Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tyres' etc. isn't it true that these components are cheaer versions of what you'd buy if you were getting them as aftermarket upgrades? For example, my Daytona 675R has Brebmo Monoblocks, but they're cast, not billet. Likewise with the highend tyres - they're made in different factories and to a lower thread depth, etc. I get that these components need to be made to a budget, but for a long time they fooled me.

    My 999s FILA is fuggin awesome. Handles like a proppa track bike, blows my brother away in the twisties up to 140 on his 1199 too.
    Ok the injection system below 1500 is Shyte, but it's now going to be sort after.
    The styling was 25 years ahead and now all those Jap stacked headlights are the norm we can say Told ya so.

    It is so interesting to me hearing you reflect on your past MCN articles. I remember a lot of them. It amazes me sometimes how far ahead super bikes of the day really were. Not much has progressed since then when you sit down and crunch the numbers. Was the MV really that rubbish?

    This is a great insight into the launch of the 1199.
    I’m considering investing in a Superleggera and would be interested to know your thoughts on a 1299 Superleggera that has a frame number of ‘XXX/500’ which might be one of the three press bikes at the launch..?
    Also, were you one of the journalists (or do you know any of the journalists) that invited to test ride the 1299 Superleggera when it was launched with the press - which may have been in 2017..?
    Many thanks for all the preparation and hardwork you put into the MCN articles and these videos - which are a great pleasure to watch…!

    I used to hate ducati's when I rode japanese bikes, now I'm older and own one, I wish I was never so biased back then. I mention I have one in comments today and youngens like to share their dislike for the ducati's, they will wake up one day!

    Here's my experience from 50k tire destroying km's on a 1299; You need to ride them aggressively and treat them like a unicycle almost as if you are riding on the front wheel only- forget about the rear. I loved it, Ive got the V4 now but the 1299 had soul whereas the V4 is far more refined all round but lacks the personality of the twin.

    Unrelated questions - When trailering a bike with electronic suspension (EC2), do you really need the ignition on for haul? Should road testers mention that?

    Had a 1299s, far too much for the road and far too expensive to chuck down a track. Generally a frustrating bike to own, in the end I swapped it for a Harley softail slim and never looked back. The Zx10r I bought recently can now undertake track duties without be worrying too much

    Can’t believe it’s nearly 20 years since the Panigale came along. A question for a future episode: I know you’re a fan of Yamaha’s TMAX and a consistent occupant of my shortlist to buy (when I finally return to the UK) is Yamaha’s Niken. They’re both bikes of great ability and individuality and yet neither of them have proved great sellers in the UK.
    Do you have any other great bikes that have failed to sell, any ideas about why they’ve failed to catch on and maybe some bikes that should have been failures that inexplicably captured the public’s imagination and sold far more than could have been expected?

    I remember always being Intimidated about Riding this Bike. It was almost a Piece of Jewelry... Not a Sports bike
    All the Older Guys with Money had this Bike. And Couldn't Ride them to save their life lol

    Looking to become the owner of an Ill handling, unreliable red money pit because I’m a posing wanker in the next few months. 😂 a serious question though, what would you choose on the basis it’s a once in a lifetime basis to own something a bit exotic and indulgent. I had it in my head to go for a v4s. But I started looking at the 1299s and even the 1199s and 1199r model and for similar money or a bit less I can get a like for like nine in terms of mileage and condition. What would you recommend neevesy?

    Bautista is about 50kg.
    That is why he’s winning, the other Ducati’s aren’t as fast.
    If the bike is really that good there would be more Ducati’s at the front.
    There aren’t- it’s Kawasaki and Yamaha.

    999 a flop? until recently it was the most successful wsbk of all time and is still the most dominant wsbk of all time, look at its 2003 win rate.

      100% as a factory racer…not so much as a road bike. Ducati had to rush the 1098 out to save their skin. 👍

    My first bike was an 1199 ran it in wet mode for the first year then sport during my second year. Even done a track day in Almeria on it. Mental bike. Big attention from people who just know a Ducati is a fast bike…Now I ride a 2020 r1m that nobody gives a fuck about 😂.
