I part-timed for a company that cleaned tanks. We had a new guy that never touched a tank before in his life. We cleaned a 120g with 25% change. I told him to put in the dechlor as I turned on the hose. He took an entire bottle of 32 oz API Pond Chlorine & Heavy Metal Neutralizer Pond Water Neutralizer and dumped it in.

I knocked half a bottle of tiny pellets in my 105g tank. Did a huge emergency clean up water change. Next morning fish were at the surface gasping and white. Added large air stone and did another huge water change. They made it ok. I felt horrible. I always put their food in a little cup now before climbing the ladder and feeding them.
    Thanks, Thomas.

This video perfectly highlights why I'm not a fan of using any chemicals that aren't necessary. Water conditioner and nutrients for the plants, that's it. Also, it's a big reason why I love Prime. Having a high tech planted tank, I've made a few mistakes with nutrient dosing and calculations, which has led me to do large, 90% water changes. I just double dose Prime to be safe, knowing it won't harm the livestock, and everything is golden. Also having a Python is a LIFE CHANGER! lol

On the topic of overdosing, how much carbon should be used per gallon of water? I use loose, bulk carbon and fill a small media bag for my 5 gallon tank, replacing about once a month. Not sure how much carbon is too much, or too little. I have one betta in the tank so not much bio load.

I make my own dechlorinator and made a huge mistake when I started, I’d use 7x the safe amount of sodium thiosulphate and it would cause ammonia to be off the scale in my tanks. I did this for 3 months without realising, until fish started to get ill. Woooo bad mistake that killed fish, you live and learn though.

I accidently overdosed my 10 gallon aquarium on topfin algaegone. I didnt catch it until about 4 hours later what i had done when I noticed my fish dying back to back fast. I lost 4 mollies and am trying to save the remainder of my fish. I immediately at that point did a 50 percent water change and balanced my ph in the freshly added water. I had to as my tap water is low ph and woulda harmed my fish futher if i didnt balance it. I am worried i might loose the other 4 mollies but am trying to help them as much as possible. Should I do another immediate water change or wait and watch them to see if they recover. Its the very first time I have did this to my tank.

Can you add the 10-20% worth of water conditioner to the tank then just add the tap water to the sink using the python or do you have to use a bucket and mix the water clarifier in the water before adding the 10-20% back to the tank?

irlSpooky - if you only want ghost shrimp and snails then you could get away with like 5-10 in a 10 gallon take with 2 snails, they also sell food pellets that sink to the bottom of the tank and the snails and shrimp will eat it in a few days

I'm in the middle of cycling my first tank and the dosage on the instructions of the bottled ammonia i bought was massively wrong and caused a 4x overdose so i had to do a large water change to get it down to manageable levels. Everything seems to be going OK now, fingers crossed for 1st fish at the weekend. I checked online and many people report that the dosage instructions for that particular product are incorrect. Should have added a little and tested. Live and learn.
