- 243 Winchester Deer Season XP 95 grain Extreme Point ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Compact with 20 inch barrel.
Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional. - Zábava

Visiting the websites above directly supports the channel and helps me bring you more awesome videos!
22" barrel is by far the most common and popular barrel length on the majority of non magnum cartridges.
Absolutely
Thank you. you test so many loads in calibers that I use. It's extremely helpful.
Glad to be of service!
I love your straight and to the point videos. I’ll be ordering something soon to support you so I can see more from your channel I just have to figure out what to order.
Glad to be of service!
Love your videos !
Excellent video as always. I have used the XP both 350 Legend and my 243.;
In both cases I did harvest a deer. My issue is passthrough. I had no passthrough in either Caliber. No bloodtrail. That is concerning if we had a runner. Recovery could be an issue. I've gone to simple cup and core S&B 100gr ammo in 243 and 180gr winch for 350 Legend. Great passthrough.
If you are concerned about passthrough I'm not sure this ammo is for you. The deer were under 20yds away in both cases in hardwoods so they were easy finds.
Glad to be of service!
That was pretty clean brass for Winchester!
Absolutely
I've a box of those bullets and because of the tip doesn't become misshapen they are accurate on 3or 4 shot groups making a two hole so tight it looks like figure 8. I believe the pointed lead tip that becomes misshapen from loading and unloading flys a little inaccurate .
Enjoyed your video
Glad to be of service!
Looks good. Thank you.
With a 243 in general I think all shots should be broadside or quartering away
Glad to be of service!
Like 95 grain hornady, just remember as always bullet placement is most omportant element!
100% correct
That would do it but...... I'm not crazy about it. By the way, your doing a great job. I am enjoying your videos. Thank you. 👍👍
Glad to be of service!
I would like to know the results from the new design boxes I recently got a new box and noticed the new box drops more at 200 yards than the old design boxes like you have. I have 1 inch difference in height at 100 yards shooting back and fourth new to old.
Love these videos. Would you say the federal fusion is still on top for a 243
It’s one of my top choices
This one sure has plenty of speed behind it. I'm not totally sure about that shallow penetration. Broadside classic shot probably. Quartering not so sure. That rapid expansion theory with it's shallow penetration still has issues in my mind.
Start testing Barnes TTSX in .243!
Tsx and ttsx!
No exit hole on buck at 100 yds. But i never saw anything like what came out of entrance hole. About 4 ft of blood spray flying out of entrance hole. Ruger compact 243 18 inch barrel.
I have a 243 with 22 inch barrel and I think your videos are great. Can you test the 80 grain federal, it's pretty fast and seems to explode on anything larger than a rabbit.
Glad to be of service! At some point I will
Awesome
Glad to be of service!
I would love to see you do some 308 test please 🙏
The xp bullets basically explode when they hit a deer. The entrance wound is huge.
I like my 243.
I still think the 243 should have been the m16 round in 88 gr
Strangely, one of the better performances out of the Deer season XP. Not good, but not grenades!
Absolutely
The Hornady 95 grain SST 243 goes 3,200 ft/s out of a 26 inch barrel, and the 75 grain V-max goes 3,600 ft/s! Both carry around the same amount of muzzle energy
The 243 really is another animal with a longer barrel
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather As well as the 6mm Remington
Since they don't make the 97 grain browning bxr anymore. I'll be giving these a try.
You won’t regret look at my comment above
I have used it in my 450 Bushmaster with good results on deer but not my 243 yet I coyote hunt more with the 243
I have used it before. It was quite a long time ago. Results were a LONG tracking job. Very poor blood trail. Went to 3006, never had any problems since 😀👍👍
This bullet will perform better on medium game at longer ranges than short ranges. Short range, the velocity is too high for the bullet so it breaks up and ruins a lot of meat. However that frangibility makes it a good varmint bullet.
My son shot a 125lb cow horn with this load this week and it dropped the deer in it's tracks but did not exit the off side.
And it wasn't supposed to.... thats what the bullet was designed to do.
Is it normal to see more than 100 fps difference in 3 rounds?
Unfortunately it’s not totally uncommon
Just bought a Stevens 334 243….what would you suggest ammo to test
85 grain Nosler Partition, 90 grain Speer Hot-Cor or 90 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip.
Don't like this load as it tends to have an ability to blow up in game if to close. My Dad lost a doe with his .308 at 60 yards and my brother lost a huge buck at 30 yards with his 30/06. The buck was killed later in the day by a neighbor and we could see that the bullet blew up on impact of the shoulder blade and never penetrated the chest cavity.
Interesting video even though i prefer running 180.bullet around the same velocity for hunting
What is the average barrel life of the 243?
It's respectable. Not as much as a 308 for example. You can get a lifetime out of it if you don't shoot to fast and let the barrel cool between shots. Not an overbore cartridge.
Assuming you don’t shoot super hot reloads, don’t let your barrel get super hot and take breaks in between groups, you should be able to get 1500-2000 rounds before accuracy starts dropping off.
I wouldnt worry about it
It would probably be a bit more if the block was laying flat
7PRC please
Eventually

I love my Browning XBolt SPR 20 inch barrel 7PRC
I've had bad experience with these in 223 and 6.5 Creedmoor back in 2020 did not penetrate very good and just blew up but I will say they are accurate this past deer season I used the deer season xp copper in my 270wsm and it did great
45-70 buffalo bore?
One word of caution. My 35 whelen 200 grain Winchester Power Point was a complete failure. 4 failure to fire and 1 bullet so loose in the brass it was unsafe to shoot. When that buck of a lifetime steps out, don't make the same mistake i made. Make good ammo choices, Winchester is cheap, unreliable ammo in my experience with it.
My dad just killed a doe with this ammo in 308 and the core came completely out of the cup! Sent shards of lead everywhere.
Yeahhh, I think I'll just stick with my 257 roberts
The 257 is great just like the old 250 Savage, It is a shame that they have lost popularity. Myself, I had a 243 Winchester as a kid, but it is sad to see some of the old cartridges fade away. With modern powders they can be loaded way better than back in the day!
@hawkuser604
I load 40.0 grains of H380 with 100 grain ballistic tips. Absolutely devastating on deer.
Gun and ammo makers messed around with .250 Savage, .257 Roberts and 6mm Remington long enough to ruin all 3 in the market place for a few decades. They handed that niche off to .243 by default.
