- 243 Winchester Remington Corelokt 100 grain pointed soft point ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Compact with 20 inch barrel.

All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.

Can't wait to see Barnes tsx 243 or nosler 100gr partition on the channel.
Looks like they haven't improved the 100gr Cor-Lokt since I used them in the 70s. They worked fine on deer. But they often came apart. 🤠
I’ve taken several deer with them, they work but penetrion isn’t the best (I mean it’s a 243 after all, it’s going to have limitations)
the 180gr. Round nose and the 200gr. r.n. mushroom just like the box.
Heat gun, weed burner on low, torch lightly fan across the gel block and it will help with the visibility inside
100 gr .243 really should be closing in at 3000fps, in most longer barrels. That would have made the performance of these bullets worse! Looks like Remington Ammo company is just as disappointing as the Remington Firearms company has become. Corelokt was always a safe choice in the 1980's but I'm starting to question that these days.
Or maybe with gel to test in and bonded bullets we are getting spoiled?
Wow 100 grainers are usually my # 1 go to but this was a real let down 🙁
Great videos as always. .243 Win is good. My suggestion: only use copper bullets. No lead in the meat or anywhere else. Good penetration too, and of course, weight retention.
and make sure you clean that bore REALLY well before you make the switch, for some reason the all copper bullets don't have good accuracy if your bore has the copper fouling from regular jacketed bullets... they work great afterwards though
Had the best success with 95 grn SST from Hornady. Used Corlokts for years in a 270 and 300 win with good results
I use 85gr Speer bt soft point over a max load of imr 4350, they always exit on broadside deer. And the deer drop on the spot. I’m probably getting 3200 fps.
I have repeated jacket separation on multiple calibers - .243 .308 - complete failure on .270. Don’t use Remington any more. I want more dependable ammunition.
I’ve definitely seen mixed results
Thanks for another good video. C/Ls are not bonded bullets per se and I've used this bullet and it's little 80g sister in handholds for decades. I've also killed deer with these exact 100g factory loads. Statistics are one thing. Meat in the freezer is what counts. The most important part of this video was the wound cavity. I don't think I've ever had a big northern Michigan whitetail go more that 60 yds with either weight 243 Core-Lost bullet . All shots were less than 200 yds, but I'd trust 'em out lots further. I find the 80g C/L somewhat more accurate in my 1:10 twist BAR, but either flavor is superb deer medicine.
I think the title of deadliest mushroom in the woods now goes to the Federal Fusion.
You nailed it!👍
I’d love to see a block melt down. I’ve been seeing some Barnes Reduced Recoil Ammo. But no info yet.
Keep on Keeping On !! And Thank You.
If I may the two shots up top were within a an inch and the deeper penetrating bullet likely traveled through the wound cavity of the first bullet thus less expansion and deeper penetration .Thanks for the test but I have seen this in other gel tests with shared cavity travel.
I'm not impressed by these. You've fired much better 243 Win. ammo in your other videos. Thanks for posting your results.
They’re definitely down my list
Hey Mason. I’ve got five Winchester Model 70’s now. Two Extreme Weathers (308 and 300 Win Mag), two Featherweights (270 and 30/06) and a Safari Express (same as yours but in .458). I’m look at getting another Model 70 in 243? Appreciate this video man. Thanks for sharing. 🙏
I love my compact featherweight model, they’re very hard to find though, I’m 6’2” and don’t find the compact hinders me in any way.
Stopped using them about 8 years ago (270 win) had several pancake and explode on deer 2 inches max penetration I found them to be better with heavy for caliber weights. Damn accurate in my Rem 700 just can't have unreliable bullets.
Stopped using them after I got a box that wouldn’t group
The heavy for calibers I’ve tested so far have all done well
700s have got to be the best-looking factory rifles (or were).
That’s very slow! Not the deadliest mushroom in the woods anymore?
Yes, but what a great marketing term. It's classic.
👍😊 the NEF lite youth 20” barrel 243 good to know.
Glad to be of service!
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather I watched the 30/30 testings 👍.
Surprising weight retention considering they were only going 2750 at the muzzle
Do the new tipped do any better? I have had good results with them in 308 and 270 but I don't have 243
I have some in 30-06 so hope so. I do have a 22” barrel tho
They’re on the docket
I have some they shoot good out of the two rifles I have used in. But have not had chance to try on game. But the old core lock have worked for me. Animal run 30 to 50 yards and drops
In my opinion, unless you use premium bullets, the 243 is a varmint/pest gun. Animals such as wolves, coyotes and small deer. I have seen guys take moose with them using 80 & 100gr cup and core bullets, but it wasn't optimal. Several shots and tracking. Anyhow, if used with TSX or CX bullets, Caribou, Moose and elk aren't out of the question with ethical hunters that are accurate shooters at sensible ranges.
Wow that was a slow MV!
Never had luck with Remington
they till drop deer dead in their tracks for decades though.
I wonder what those bullets would look like if they were going the full 2960
Just like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop, the world will never know 🌎 🦉 🍭
That’s poor performance even from a 20” barrel. Like everyone I’ve had success with corlokt but if I had to use it I’d go with the newer tipped stuff. I like the 243 it’s a really accurate round and it’s capable of dropping everything in North America but it needs that velocity. My choice is a the 100gr nosler partition loaded by corbon. When it says 3120 on the box I’m getting that from a 22” barrel with a little to spare. It’s a bit pricey but not much more than most stuff and I’ve yet to not see it fully penetrate on a broadside shot. So I got a blood trail to track it the 10 yards it runs lol. It’s the best 243 load on the market.
Funny how guys claim the .243 is too small while saying the .308 is fine. Both use the same casing. May I suggest sharing the Standard Deviation achieved rather than average since it describes how greatly velocities vary. It’s my understanding an SD value of 15 fps or less is excellent for factory ammo.
The case itself is about the least important factor, a 150-180gr bullet from a .308 is an entirely different thing than a 100gr bullet from a .243. In the 100+ factory loads I’ve tested so far, maybe 3 have had a SD of 15 fps or less, they’re all over the place, it’s not a number that’s useful in terms of choosing a factory hunting ammo.
Those rounds stop anything medium game 😊
I stopped using the core lokt years ago, they do weird things in deer. I’ve had better luck with SST’s, weird I know,,,
Corelokt work as almost any bullet for deer but they aren’t the deadliest mushroom in the woods
But they have the best marketing slogan.
It be really cool if you did some 7mm rem mag ballistic test
whoa, that is pretty anemic
They are slow way underloaded
It's been said that the ammunition manufacturers load down cartridges as they age. Could be happening here.
They are Remington core locks. They are not a premium bullet. You get what you pay for.. if they were so great, nobody would buy the premium stuff.
You know it's accurate. You know it's going to shoot. You know a push feed extractor will pull it out of the barrel every time when fired. I say it's an excellent round. Load up a Winchester round. Very inconsistent. Common pressure marks. Cases get stuck in the chamber and push feed extractors failed to extract the case. One-stuck case and you're done hunting. I just purchased 200 rounds Of 150 grain Remington tipped for $20 a box.
Please start making sense
30-06?
Bad batch? I've had decades of success with core-lokts in a wide variety of calibers, on paper, penetration tests, and hundreds of harvested animals from woodchucks to moose. But there's the proof right there in your video that box is not consistent and overall poor performance. Along with some other folks in here saying they have had some trouble as well. 🤔🤷 I get that they are not premium bullets but..... Like I said, I have never had a problem in 50+ years of using them.
Will they kill whatever, absolutely, was this a bad batch, not any more “bad” than any of the other Corelokt loads across calibers I’ve tested. Some do great (typically heavy for caliber versions), some are pretty mediocre across the board.
Funny how one bullet may be awesome in one caliber and poor in another caliber.
Corelokt seems to do very well in heavy and heavy-for-caliber loads. The 170gr 30-30 is great as is the 220gr 30-06.
