Game Changing Customizable Workshop Storage

  • Every workshop has some combination of screws, nails, and other random hardware. To keep things organized, I made some modular storage cabinets that lock together or break apart. They are super flexible and work well for someone like me, who is constantly moving things around in the workshop. I designed this project when I was trying to organize my hardware. Every time I buy screws, bolts, or nails, they seem to come in large boxes that take up space. They don’t always stack easily and I was frustrated with constantly moving them around. I found some plastic storage bins that I really like! They stack together, have locking lids so they won’t accidently open, and they hold a typical 1lb box of screws! There are a ton of ways to customize this project, and frankly, I put too much thought into it. There are so many options that I delayed making this video because I wasn’t sure which ones to show. T track would be awesome. So would some classic sliding dovetails. Ultimately, I went with the dartboard mounting brackets. There’s just something about them that I totally dig.

    Nice idea for storing your screws etc, as for the little plastic tubs you forgot the main thing about them when you was talking about the use and that was simply they're transparent so you're able to see exactly what you might need for a project 😊. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

    What a great idea! That bracket idea is great, got my brain juices flowing. I'm in the middle of planning out my shop re-organization, this is defiantly going to be included in that!

    Can't make anything in my shop now because I've started the prosses of getting my house ready to sell. Once I've bought a new house, I'll be able to build the shop from the ground up. Then I'll get to start making awesome things again. I enjoy your videos. Keep making and stay awesome.

    Great idea, Billy. If you had to buy that white oak, those would cost as much as a piece of fine furniture.

      I bet! There is definitely an advantage to milling your own logs.

    I wish i have those boards that you call scrap😂
    I made these but fir 8 boxes. Using 1/4 plywood was strong enough for the horizontal dividers

      Yes it would be. There are several ways to design it, and none are wrong if they do the job.

  • @geomikea

    NICE! However, my practical side is saying that the shelves are too darn thick. By using 1/4" inch thick shelves, I could probably add another shelf. Of course my aesthetic side says that would make it look cheap and junky. I hate when they argue like this.

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  Před 8 měsíci

      That's why I made them all 1/2". Same mental gymnastics.

    Brilliant work, Billy! Nicely done! 😃
    I know where to find boxes like those! They're pretty cheap! I guess I'm going to build something similar!
    Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

    I got ahold of an old first aid cabinet that my work was throwing away. It is the style that looks like a suitcase hanging on the wall, but it is absolutely perfect for these boxes of screws.
    We had several and once coworkers found out what I was doing with it, the rest disappeared quick 😂

    I've been wanting to make something for my screw boxes without having to take them out of the box. Some French cleats on that and it would fit my needs.
    Thank you

  • @ArchEdge

    Great Video.... Question, ive seen you do this in many previous videos - When your resawing a board, why do you cut both sides on the table saw and finish with the bandsaw, when you could just go staight to the bandsaw? Interested to see your take on this.

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  Před 8 měsíci

      It's faster. I get perfectly sized cuts with zero blade drift. Better dust collection. But most importantly, I have more fun this way.

    • @ArchEdge
      @ArchEdge Před 8 měsíci

      @@NewtonMakes yeah great point. My bandsaw is so temperamental. I spend ages getting it right, get great cuts out of it, and then randomly it decides to drift. Ill try your way next time.
