Ugly dresser gets a modern modification

  • This dresser was about to get thrown away. It only had a little damage, but it was just a bit ugly. We saw that it was solid wood, so we thought we should save it and try to make it better looking. We did this entire makeover with cheap materials and cheap tools. We gave it a midcentury modern look. This involved some wood working to make the legs and drawer pulls. We did a bit of experimenting, but ultimately we like the way it came out.
We didn't have to go far for this dresser. One of my dad's former roommates was getting rid of it. So he just left it at my house. Usually when we find a dresser, we had to go get it. But this dresser came to me. It pretty much met all the criteria that we look for in a dresser to fix up. It was ugly, had all the drawers, made of solid wood, and was free.
We don't tend to get a lot of money for our furniture flips, so it was essential that we minimize costs. The dresser was free, the paint was $2, and will last for several other projects. The stain and polyurethane cost like $18 each, which is a little high, but they should last for several projects. Unfortunately, after this project, I didn't properly close the can of polyurethane, and rain got in it and messed it all up. The circular saw was a gift, the orbital sander was a gift. The belt sander was $5. The orbital sander sandpaper was in a 50 pack for $18. That will last for many projects. The belt sander sandpaper came in a three-pack, I think for $13. Those will last a long time. The paint brushes come in three-packs from the dollar store. Oil based polyurethane usually ruins those cheap brushes, so I tend to save that step for last, so that I can do that whole project with one brush. And the legs and drawer pulls were all made from salvaged scrap wood, which I got for free. The screws cost money, but I got them for my greenhouse project. Screws tend to cost about $10 a box. If I was only doing one or two projects, I would just get small amounts of all these products, instead of having all this extra material hanging around my house.
We named this channel "We Found These" because these are all projects that we found. We actually used to live in an apartment that had an alley in the back, and we used to find discarded furniture out there and I would just carry it home on a skateboard. We hope to inspire people to try these same kinds of projects. If we can find these, I'm sure anyone can. And if we can find ways to repair and update furniture on a budget, I'm pretty sure other people can, too.
You can find us on IG under the name wefoundthese, and TikToc under the name wefoundthese . We used to have a website by the same name, but we let it go.

I really like the transformation. Love the legs but don’t love watching you work so dangerously. Please use something to push your wood on the saw instead of your fingers getting so close !

Love your ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness!! The dresser looks SO much better than before! Please please save your $$$ and buy yourself a safer table saw! Here’s the question, what’s more expensive, your fingers and a trip to the ER or a safer saw?? I would love to see you make more videos because I think not only are you talented at transforming furniture but you make entertaining videos. Please protect yourself so you can make more. ❤

What I loved about your project is the absolute honesty about your work area, your tools, and your ideas. The walnut stain really picked up the grain in the drawer fronts. One suggestion - invest in some more clamps and clamp down your boards that you're cutting for detail. Safer. I like how you admit all your errors, and just move forward. That's a really positive trait. The legs are awesome. Really pretty with that soft curve on the edges. And the handles. You did a great job on this project with a beautiful outcome. Glad I found your channel.

What a spectacular restoration/new design! Incredible talent to be able to do what you did without the latest and greatest tools you see other refinishes using. This made me incredibly happy because I am starting out in refinishing but like you don’t have many “tools” so it helps to see what can be done with a circular saw, a brick and sanding by hand or with an old time orbital sander. I can’t wait to see what else you do you are a joy to watch!

I really loved the transformation. I volunteer at a thrift store and we often get solid furniture donated in desperate need of refinishing. I refinish the furniture for free for the store so instead of throwing it away or selling it for almost nothing they are able to sell it for much more. So we kind of have a similar theme with saving free furniture. I'm subscribing and looking forward to seeing more videos. My only issue is I dont care for the music, and I know thats a very personal thing. but for me if I want music I go to the radio, and I come here for wood working.

Great ethic and vision. I enjoyed watching this but would echo what others have said; lose the music, use a push stick with the table saw (try not to stand with your body in-line with the wood you’re cutting) and get some eye, ear & lung protection.
A more stable workbench will really help with accuracy, as will a combination square and more clamps. If you look up ‘taper jig’ you can see a way of making those legs more safely and easily. Looking forward to more videos. Subscribed 👍

It is entirely up to you, but using the tablesaw freehand like that, you'll eventually induce a kickback, and probably lose a finger or two when you do.
You can make a sled for those angled cuts. This can be as simple as a sheet of ply or MDF running against the fence.
