I changed my workshop six times in the last 10 years. But I can not improve it any further. It is a very efficient workshop where you can do almost everything you want till projects of 180cm in length. When you are interested in this topic, you have to watch this video :-) - Jak na to + styl

Small workshops have their challenges, certainly, and I get around cutting full sheets most of the time by having an excellent local timber yard that offers precision board cutting. No Dennis, no...your English is excellent. There are no problems understanding you. Now, on the other hand, my Dutch is terrible - I only know a few words. You are doing fine! I always love seeing your perfection of everything you do and make. I like the very plain and simple lines of the European style. It is ALWAYS a pleasure to see your stuff and shop! Please don't go anywhere - you are an inspiration to me sir!

I have a shop space that is about 274 x 274 cm with restrictions... I have been thinking about how a track jig and a circular saw could be better for me than the table saw and miter saw. Your video and interview with Peter only reinforces these thoughts.
I've been considering making all tables in the shop 61 x 122 cm and mobile. This way I can arrange them around the walls for more work area, or put them together to make wider or longer table space. With rare exception, I will be working with things no longer or taller than 130 cm. That's for furniture I want to build for myself. I am hoping to make much smaller craft on a regular basis.
You two have given me a lot to think about and consider.

Fantastic video. I'm just about to setup my workshop and I have just bought my first dust extractor so im really looking forward to you doing that video. The fitting are really confusing. It's connecting to my tools thats hard. I bought a kit by rockler to connect to my power tools but only to find its ment for a shop vac and not a dust extractor. I hope you can cover connecting to tools and machines. Thanks so much for your video's. Cheers mate.
took me a while to notice the change to festool, you must have won the lottery dennis :0) having an integrated system is a great advantage though.
Holy moly! I was looking for this video for literally months. I was having a walk outside when I seen this video being promoted by Peter (long time follower here, hehe!) but once I was back home I couldn't find the link anywhere.
Thanks for the video, it's been really useful to me since I've a similar shop inside my apartment (3x4mt) and I'm constantly looking to improve the organization since it's crucial to have an efficient workflow.

Long term follower of both you & Peter. For me the timing is great as I am about to put the roof on my new “man cave”. Having recently retired from paid work I now dabble in furniture repair & a beginner wood turner. I have been purchasing Festool hand tools for 15 years now pending my retirement and will soon be able to use without packing / unpacking storing etc in the car garage. So I look forward with interest to your following videos. BTW your English is easily understood.

Hi, I do not think you have any problems speaking English, in fact I know a lot of English people that cannot speak as well as you can. I already know Peter and the 10-minute workshop and I find him very knowledgeable. I enjoy your tools from Bangood and I have several of their tools myself.
Thanks John, Of course my Dutch is much better :-) So, there is always a bit of thinking in the back of my mind and sometimes I have to talk around words I do not know. So, I can understand that it sounds strange. But I learn by doing it. Thanks for sharing, it is not that bad. :-)
@@HookedonWood Unfortunately Dutch is not a popular language, I still prefer it over Canadian even though I have lived here for 60+ years. Because I came here very young there is no Dutch accent, but my Dutch has a Canadian accent. From my experience working on medical imaging standards with Europeans, they generally understand English grammar better than those who grew p with it :-) You are doing very well with a challenging language, very clear what you are trying to say. Heel bedankt voor al de videos, het is een groot karwij.

Dennis. As everyone has said: your English is excellent. Better than many many British people. Your workshp is the same size as mine and your description and careful planning has given me a really good set of suggestions. Yours is the cleanest I have ever seen - it looks like a Festool showroom! I wonder how you have time to make anything. Keep it up this is good work.
You are right about the time part :-( It becomes difficult to find the time and just enjoy woodworking.
Brillant Dennis, I learned alot here today on your video, your English is excellent, and your advice is helpful, I have a workshop that's 16ft by 16.6ft and machine placement took me along time and thankfully workflow now is pleasant, the assembly area of my shop I tend now to value more than ever before, I have a big Laguna Fusion 3 cabinet saw and planer thicknesser and many other machines but I have an assembly table bench area that has worked out great, keep up the great videos and stay safe, kindest regards Louie Ulster Workshops UK

Dennis, your English is very good. Although I have lived in Australia for more than 40 years, I’m originally from the north of England, (Yorkshire) and although I’m speaking the same language, I’m often not understood. 😉 I believe your accent it part of your charm. Don’t change it.👍

Thanks for the reality check towards shop layout. It is so easy to get discouraged and make excuses for not building. You show so many solutions. I really appreciate exposing your previous layout and prove great work is not dependent on the tool. We all have to start somewhere and make the best choices we have available.
Setting up my first workshop and organising the layout is still my biggest challenge. Where to place each machine and how much space each on needs ?
Working on a small scale, you're absolutley right that each machine must be instantly usable. In small spaces there aren't many areas which can be dedicated to just one task ... and that's the challenge.
You explanation of capacity on each side of a machine helps a lot.
Logical, realistic priorities are key to planning. It can be easy to confuse the work you wish you were doing with the projects you actually work on. Your initial comments were spot on: shop organization always amounts to a triage among desirable attributes and unavoidable limitations.
Dennis thank you for all your insight on shop layout so helpful. Also thanks for adding Peter’s prospective on small shop organization.

Hi, Dennis, from another Dennis. I've been watching your videos as of late and find them both interesting and thought provoking. I especially like your China Tools videos and I have purchased a few tools from them, although I haven't tried any of them yet as I'm in the process of transforming my garage into a woodworking shop. I too have a small place and space is at a premium for me, so much so that I am putting my dust collector on the outside in back of my garage. Right now I'm making an enclosure that the top will open as will the back and one side to facilitate emptying the chip drum and doing any maintenance if the need arises. I cut a hole in the back of the garage to run a 6" pipe through and that will be my trunk size. The garage measures 6.71by 3.96 meters so when I get the outside enclosure done hopefully tomorrow, I'll start installing my ceiling which is 6" tongue and groove beaded board. After that, I get to start laying out my shop. I'm intrigued by the Valchromat and am looking into a retailer that I can get that from. Anyhow, you have a great channel and thanks for all that you do. Have a great day!!!

Great video, and an interesting subject. One thing I want to see more about in future episodes would be portable workbenches and solutions that easily stow away when not in use. A lot of people need to share their workshops with a car or two, and rely on space saving solutions. Perhaps an interview with other CZcamsrs having limited space?

Dennis you are correct, efficiency is overrated. Effectiveness always is more important than efficiency.
So many great tips here Dennis. I liked how you plan for how big of material you can work with at each station. I agree this is more important than the flow of wood through your shop for a small space that is not doing production work. It was nice seeing Peter on your channel too. You both have great channels. Keep up the great work.

Dennis, your english is far from terrible! Some of your vocabulary I would deem very advanced for someone with english as a second language. You speak with a logic and eloquence that many people here in the UK would fail to achieve. Keep up the great work 👍

Using powerpoint for shop layout! Dennis you are a prime example that it's not the tools, but the person who makes great things :) But then you also have a collection of extremely nice tools!

Thanks Dennis. Enjoy your videos. I agree with you on not needing an "efficient" workflow in a woodworking shop, especially for those of us with small shops. Too many woodworkers on CZcams over-emphasize an "efficient workflow", but in my opinion this is really only relevant in large, commercials shops. My shop is similar in size to yours and all of the comments you made are true in my opinion. Thanks for pointing out that "efficient workflow" is over-rated for the woodworking hobbyist.

Your English is very good Dennis!
My workshop is about half the size of your current one. Possibly a similar size to Peter's. I'm in the process of changing it around, trying to figure the best position for each tool, I simply can't fit a planer in at the moment no matter what I do.
This video has given me ideas, particularly when you pointed out that it can be an inconvenience to move everything off a workbench if this is also an outfeed table. I've just built a basic MFT style bench and deliberately made it the same height as my table saw. Now, I'm planning on moving my table saw so it doesn't feed onto the bench.
I look forward to the next video.

Thanks so much for this video. My new shop is 5.75m x 3.25 so efficiency is really important. I find it very difficult to design a layout before hand, as only when I have the tools and use them do I know how they need to be positioned. Still, your layout, and points of view have helped me re-consider some of my core ideas... Now onto (practical) dust collection (and connecting it to machines) and of course the french cleats - I am planning on putting them around my entire shop, and make everything, including cabinets to hang on this. That way I can always re-arrange stuff as I learn where I need it...

Another great video Dennis. Great point you had that rarely do you process one board on one machine and then move to the next machine. As you pointed out you need staging space at each tool to hold the non-processed and processed wood. In fact that is my main issue - mainly because I tend to have to much crap laying around on all my horizontal surfaces. Looking forward to your followup videos and your new workshop layout. Your workshop is about the exact same size as my garage which I'm planning to turn into my small woodshop. I would've thought your woodshop was so much bigger in size. Now I just need my wife to give the ok on converting my garage into an entire woodshop....

Dennis, I think your English is just fine -- and infinitely better than my practically non-existent Dutch (and other languages, too). It's a pleasure hearing you discuss workshop organization. At 17:20 you mentioned you couldn't get a flip stop for your Incra fence. Indeed, at least in the USA, Incra does offer a very nice precision flip stop for their Incra fence. I have two. They're a bit pricey, but I do like them very much. I wonder if it's not available in NL?
Hi Dennis, I applied a lot of similar concepts when I‘ve set up my 14m2 workshop a while ago and it‘s not changed since then. I‘ve added just one constraint: all machine and bench tops at the same height.
