- Whats up CZcams! In this video, I demonstrate how I replaced the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensors on a 2006 Nissan Xterra Offroad. This video should also work for other vehicles with the Nissan VQ40DE motor such as a Frontier or Pathfinder. This video should assist you if you are receiving the code P0335, P0340, and P0345.

Thanks Maximum. It definitely was a pain, but if I had to do it over, it would be less difficult. The passenger side cam sensor was the hardest but you just need to unbolt it, move it out to the engine bay opening by the passenger side and use pliers to disconnect it from the harness.
@@_moes_garage_ consider replacing the heater core hoses in the engine compartment as a preventative maintenance

Thanks man! And no, I'm not driving it in doors lol. I actually do take it off road sometimes. Good luck on your repair! Make sure you use OEM parts or the next best. Some people are reporting issues and they didn't use OEM parts. The cam sensors are Hitachi units. Go OEM or if you're going aftermarket, go for Hitachi replacements. For the crankshaft sensor, I didn't use OEM and idk what the OEM equivalent is. The part I used is in the description. I haven't had any issues so if you need a cheaper alternative. I do recommend that one. I picked it up from rock auto.
Hey Moe. Took your advice and went with the Rockauto NTK sensor. I replaced the sensor and the truck started right up. However, the code did not clear and it did seem to be throwing some extra exhaust. It started no prob multiple times and is idling nice and engine sounds good. Should I clear the code with my reader or is there a "relearn" procedure that will turn the code off? Thanks again for the video, went just like you said it would. @@debneter hey that's great news man! I would clear the codes with the scanner. Just curious, what exhaust code did it throw?
No Exhaust code, still the P0335. I wasn't sure if I needed to clear it or if it would go off by itself. It just seemed to be giving off extra exhaust out tailpipe once I started it.@@_moes_garage_
@@debneter oh I see what you're saying. Yeah go ahead and delete the code. Also, consider replacing your cam shaft sensors. Apparently the three sensors work together and go out at similar times.
Good job . Next job try using 1/4 drive tools for small stuff like 10mm bolts I find a little more room helps

About to tackle this project …for the second sensor that’s super hidden and hard to see, are you using the camera to help you find the sensor/bolt..i climbed on my engine to locate sensor and I can barely see it !

I have 06 Nissan frontier and has motor like urs, 4.0. I did exactly as u did and changed all 3 sensors. I was getting a check engine light and came back code to change out passenger cam pos sensor. All 3 sensors were changed and no more engine light on. Problem now is, long crank time before it starts. Any feedback appreciated

@@_moes_garage_ I used OEM on all 3 sensors. Ebay seller said authentic Nissan OEM. Bought all 3 for 175 dllrs

It should just be wear and tear over the life of the car. Did you replace them with OEM units? I didn't use OEM ones but it sounds like they're the ones to get. Aftermarket ones might not be to the proper spec. I bought Hitachi units because Hitachi makes the sensors for Nissan. So far no issues. Thanks for watching!
ah.. this stuff was pain in the rear when I was working and replacing my all the way back when I just got the X and started learning about it... removing the connectors behind the engine was the hardest part for me LOL
Yes, it definitely requires some patience. Although if I had to do it over again, I could get it done much faster. The trick with the passenger side one is to unbolt it first, move it over to the opening in the passenger side engine bay, then use pliers to unhook it from the harness.

Yes it is. Are you doing all three sensors? It's recommended that you do. The biggest tip I can give you on the passenger side cam sensor, is to unbolt it first and move it over to the passenger side opening of the engine bay, by the fuse box. Then use pliers to unhook the sensor with some pliers from the harness. I gave this last minute tip at 16:40 in the video. Good luck! It was a pain when I did it, but i can definitely do it much faster if I had to do it again.
That oil pressure is to the moon.
Lol that's the same thing I said when I first saw it, but it's ok. It's a dummy gauge and the oil pressure sensor is known to go bad. My actual oil pressure is ok 👍

Pulling my hair out! I replaced both camshaft sensors and the crankshaft sensor. My 2012 Frontier still hard starts if at all and still codes the Bank 1 cam sensor after replacing it twice!
Hey there, sorry to hear that. Did you use OEM or Hitachi units? Hitachi makes the sensors for Nissan so it's a viable alternative to OEM.
@@_moes_garage_ The first ones I bought from Amazon, when they didn’t work I replaced them with Oreilly’s part. It’s only the bank one sensor that codes. After replacing it and resetting the codes it runs fine until I shut the truck off and try to restart. Then the engine light comes back on…hard to start. I had Nissan tune it up a couple of months ago, I wonder if it’s a timing issue?
@@dannybelindafam5420it's not a timing issue. It's most likely the sensor. Aftermarket sensors are not always made to the proper spec like the oem ones.
Side note. I don't like O'Reillys or AutoZone. I've never had good luck with them. Check out rock auto that's where I get my parts if they're not OEM. They sometimes sell OEM parts, too.

What was the first sensor called? I just swapped out the sensor in the middle and boy it was horrific. Thanks for showing the third sensor by the driver side, I was dreading looking for it.
The one I did first was the "crankshaft" sensor. The other two were the camshaft sensors.

I'm sure there is, but I don't know it. I have only heard that if you need to replace any one of these three sensors, you should replace all of them.

Hi Rey, I'm not sure what you bought but there are 3 "position sensors" on the xterra. One crankshaft sensor (inside the passenger side wheel well) and two camshaft sensors (one behind each cylinder head). Hope this helps.
My xterra threw the p0345 code. I was only going to do the 2 camshaft sensors. Do you think doing the crank sensor is also very important to do?
Hey there! Yes I do. These sensors will leave you stranded and they seem to wear out together. So if you get one code, you should really change out all 3 sensors

I guess I gotta place another order. Oh well! I'm going with all Hitachi sensors. I was told they are the same as Oem.

Hi shadow truck! Yes I was laying on top of the motor to access them. It was such a pain but if I had to do it over again, it wouldn't be too bad. The hardest part is the passenger side cam sensor and the trick is to unbolt it then move it over to the opening on the passenger side of the engine bay. Then use pliers to disconnect the sensor from the harness.
@@_moes_garage_ Im your 42nd subscriber. My Fronty 07 V6 has same engine, bought new back 2007. As of 02152023, 276k odo same engine n tranny. Durable engine if well cared for.

Good question! Bank 1 is the passenger side cylinders, while bank 2 is the driver side.
Does changing these sensors require an oil change?
Hey there! No it doesn't require an oil change, thankfully.
@Moe's Garage this mechanic is charging me about $640 for the crank and camshaft sensors and oil change, plus labor because he thinks it requires a specific type of oil.
640 plus Labor? That seems pretty high. I bought parts from rock auto for about $150. If I were to have bought Nissan parts, it would have been about $300. The oil is 5w30 which is a very common oil even if synthetic. If you got OEM parts plus a synthetic oil change I'd say $450 would be a reasonable price. In terms of Labor, it should only take about 2 hours. Maybe three if he's never done it before.
640 would be a reasonable price if it was including labor, in my opinion.
