English consonants can be confusing! Whether it’s understanding the difference between the different consonants, or producing them.
In this consonant masterclass, I’ll teach you the three elements that you need to take into consideration when pronouncing consonants (hint: it’s all about place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing), and how the consonant chart represents all of that. It’s easier than you think! I will also teach you how to read the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) and discuss some tricky cases that you should look out for, when it comes to the pronunciation of consonants.

Hello. I’m vietnamese and i’ve been studying English for 1 year but English pronunciation is my hardest part when i studying English. This video is mind-blowing! I've been trying to sound more American and I've been studying the English vowels. After a few months focusing on pronunciation I'm able to distinguish most of them but I'm still having a hard time pronouncing them, and even more so to incorporate them whenever I speak. I think I'm finally understanding the difference between "I" and "e" as in "pink" and "red" thanks to this video and the tongue position explanation. Thank you!
We don't have "θ, ð, w" consonants in Turkish. We have "r, ɾ" but not "ɹ". We have all of the other American English consonants. So, it doesn't take too long to learn and produce American English consonants for us. However, the real challenge is the vowels because vowels have different qualities and they really change the melody. I wish they had taught these sounds in school and so we would have been so much better in English. It's really not that hard to teach them. Anyway, thanks Hadar!

As a Slavic language speaker, the post-alveolar approximate (r) was the most difficult, followed by unconsciously producing a t/d instead of "th". The transition from "th" to "r" also took a _lot_ of practice. There are other difficulties, but these are by far major ones for me. Thanks for all your videos on those subject, Hadar!

I have never thought of the proper location of my tong and etc, during pronunciation. I just say words without even thinking about them. It is fascinating to me how much details we have behind the consonants or producing them. I cannot hear myself, so may ask my coworkers to come up with the list of my " typical mispronounced consonants". I am sure I have them! Keep you posted. Thank you for your masterclass!

As a Japanese speaker, I thought for a very long time that R was the hardest English sound to pronounce. In school I was taught to practice R as it doesn’t exist in Japanese, and L is close to Japanese R (which I guess is somewhere in between English R and L). So I practiced R a lot and became good at it, and wasn’t paying much attention to L (was using Japanese R for it).
I was shocked when a ESL teacher first pointed out to me that my L in “really” sounded like R. Since then I’ve been very careful with Ls but still the hardest consonant for me especially when trying to speak faster or after speaking Japanese, as my tongue get confused which way to go, L or Japanese R lol.
So for other Japanese speakers I want to strongly advise that practicing L is as important as R, along with TH, V, F etc.

Here in India, unfortunately, the curriculum doesn't give the required weightage to this "the Foundation" and yet expect every student to sound like a native speaker.

This is fascinating. Never thought of this in such detail, but when I consciously try putting all the things in the right place I produce the right sound (or close enough :). I think in the Russian language some similar consonants that we use just moved one square to the left.

The only thing missing here is the distinction between aspirated and unaspirated sounds, which would be particularly helpful for people whose native language doesn't use aspiration for the /p/, /t/, and /k/ consonants.
Thank you for using all the technical terms. I am a linguistic student, first year, taking a phonetics and IPA transcription course, and have to learn all the IPA symbols. This has helped with really thinking of manner and place for the phonemes outside of English.

As for most Italians the most difficult consonants are the dental fricatives (θ and ð).
Other difficult consonants are the voiced velar nasal (ŋ) and the american r which is different from the italian one.
We Italians are also lazy when we have to pronounce the h and usually skip it (kind of cockney pronunciation).
I have requested the pdf of the lesson, but so far I have not received it.

Hadar, I have long wanted to ask you what do you think about the stopped D sound.
Many pronunciation trainers talk about the stopped T sound in American English. But I never found any videos about a stopped D.
Despite it exists. Or at least I hear it :)
