Respected the history, just gorgeous. Grade II Star listing, yet the UK doesn't see how this SAVES the history of the country by awarding grants to SAVE these building/homes, I'll never understand. Good grief, had to wait 2 years to get the approval of the planning commission. 4 yrs. just to get to the roofing. Thank goodness Jude had her cousin for the restoration.

I thought that I have seen all of the Restoration Man episodes, as well as his other shows, but found this one that I had missed and it's a definite favorite! I Love that she kept it open and true to its original use, and I love that she's focused and determined and an overall hard as*. It was really awesome to see this story unfold from my living room here in Utah. This is my all time all-time favorite show and I hope that Lockdown doesn't stop his production.

A wonderful outcome and I am particularly impressed with how the builders managed to hide the modern timber roof supports and just allow the old timbers to show. I didn't like the kitchen much and it needs a Rayburn to provide heat during the autumn and winter. She was lucky to have a cousin who is a first class restorer BUT good on her for sticking to her vision.

I love the fact that she didn't get too modern with the furnishings. I always see these renovations of bedrooms with lots of daylight streaming in or windows where the rest of the town's people can see in. Once the light comes in I would be awake and I would be paranoid that people could see into my bedroom! I also agree with the comment about these restoration society's. There should be some funding coming from them or keep your mouth's shut. Either save the buildings with financial aid or take them down.

I think that the Preservation Authorities that seem to have such demands on people trying to keep some form of authenticity whilst renovating should be more than happy that people are prepared to do something to save these structures rather than letting them fall down ...and therefore relax red tape.

Very nice place! Amazing what can be done with a 500,000-pound budget on top of whatever it took to buy the place. I'd hate to have to dust the timbers and wash the windows, though. For me, my little 860 square-foot Mexican-ish 1975 condo is just right. Fortunately for my budget, I actually like cozy places. But I wish the homeowner all the best. It was a labor of love, and it worked out well.

Because wood, depending on its grain, or whether the heart is used will, dry, twist, or bow accordingly, and with such a huge expanse of wood over a huge area, one can expect all kinds of different, “torturous” movement over time. This makes perfect sense and becomes the ultimate challenge centuries later to correct it. It takes a great deal of knowledge to remedy the multiple variants in order to end up with a completely functional while harmonious and beautiful end result! Only a master woodworker could do the work judiciously to bring all the variable wood elements together. Of course I am simplifying the process but in reality, it will take an enormous amount of knowledge and experience to bring about the best structural result! NO EASY TASK NO MATTER HOW ONE LOOKS AT IT!!!
ALL OF MY ADMIRATION is given to each of these men who worked so diligently to to make everything right!!!
ALL KUDOS SHOULD GO TO HER AMAZING COUSIN, WHO CLEARLY KNEW WHAT THE TASK AHEAD OF HIM WAS...HE ABSOLUTELY TRANSFORMED, IN THE ABSOLUTE BEST WAY POSSIBLE, THIS VAST BARN, IN ORDER TO NIT ONLY SAVE IT BUT FOR IT TO BE A MONUMENTALLY INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURE, FOR ALL PURPOSES FOR GENERATIONS TO COME!!!
THIS MAN DESERVES A MEDAL FOR HIS OUTSTANDING WORK!!!! What a superb achievement for him and in his name!!!! He is a Master builder in his own right!!!!

Jude is a wonderful example of a strong woman who isn't afraid to be feminine. I'll bet that had a lot to do with with why the build using family worked out...without the drama!
IMHO, the interior was too big. The kitchen was impractical and the energy efficiency is never addressed openly. I didn't see solar panels.

Beautiful restoration! As an American of Irish descent and daughter of an architect/carpenter/contractor, I love the idea of restoring one of these lovely old buildings in my ancestral home of the UK. It is absolutely amazing to me these buildings are sometimes older than the US.
I'm surprised none of the builds have taken advantage of epoxies, etc to stabilize existing ancient timbers rather than splicing/sistering new wood. Some of the new methods would save original wood.

Ye Gods! Not even 10 minutes in, and I'm going "Only 500000.00 pounds?!?!?!?!? I can see Kevin McCloud shaking his head with a horrified look on his face. That wondrous old pile will take MUCH more than that. It's worth doing well, as it's a living piece of local history and has been shamefully let go. It will make a wonderful home for two boys to put down roots in. All the local kids will swarm there.
Well, I stand corrected!! Seems like the worst hold up was waiting for the go ahead from the historical building people. Her cousin obviously has a genuinely talented and committed group working with him. They did that barn justice. The old elements are given pride of place, with the modern era gently laid underneath. I hope that crew is willing to take on apprentices, because their skills are rare and necessary.
The kitchen is exactly what the space needed. Everything kept below the counter line, exposing all the windows and more old beams. That kitchen could be used for catering functions, because of all the prep space. This barn will be hosting many a large festive party. The boys will love living there, with their mother working from home and being able to have all their "mates" in for gaming and goofing around. The space! A black lab will finish things off nicely.

How she heated the place economically using in The Panasonic Aquarea T-Cap was the ideal solution for such a large renovation project, as the system provides a reliable and constant nominal capacity output and excellent energy rating with a COP of 5.08. The quietness of this system was also a deciding factor on selecting this product. As well as being a reliable and efficient heating and hot water solution against alternatives such as boilers and oil burners, this Total Capacity system maintains heating capacity, even with cold outdoor temperatures, maintaining 16kW of heating, even when outside is as low as -15oC.”

God bless your heart for restoring this beautiful piece of history... what a great job you all accomplished. I had a question about the roof... if there was a hard rain with wind, do these types of shingles/slates do a good job of keeping the rain out? Gary from America. ps I live in a country school house that I made into a home...

    • @SandraNelson063
      @SandraNelson063 Před 5 lety

As I understand it, the weight and shape of those clay tiles ( a Roman idea by the way) keeps the wind and rain out. Also in the rebuild of the roof the team carefully fitted in what looked like weather proof thick insulation pieces. Those tiles are madly durable. Some of them are from the original 1600s first build. I guess over time some of them may blow off, if there is a truly BAD storm. But regular roofing tiles will too.
I do think reusing old historic buildings is a good idea. A lot of older buildings were constructed by very smart builders, and can keep going for generations. I say let's take advantage of that, and show appreciation for those bygone crafts people.
