  • Join Gareth and Jill in a gripping episode of The Restoration Man as they turn a Victorian church into their dream family home. Gareth, with no building experience, tackles the restoration solo, facing budget crises and unpredictable weather. The couple's relationship is strained as the project tests them emotionally and financially. From surprising archaeological finds to design disagreements, witness the highs and lows of this unique conversion. Will the church become a symbol of family triumph, or will challenges tear their dream apart?
    -------
The Restoration Man features architect George Clarke as he explores the UK, discovering unique buildings being transformed into homes. Each episode highlights a different historical structure, like windmills, churches, and towers, focusing on their restoration, architectural significance, and the personal stories of the homeowners involved. This series blends history, architecture, and inspiring renovation tales.

The downstairs is great, but they really should have taken George's advice about upstairs, Boys have this annoying habit of growing and a room that was too small for them as little ones is going to be impossible when they are hulking youths.
I have never understood this obsession with bathrooms. I am as clean as the next person, but I don't need a ballroom to do my ablutions. Give me a shower, a washbasin, a loo and possibly a bidet and I am happy. I can understand some people like baths, but do they have to be the size of a swimming pool? How much time do you realistically spend in that room? 30 minutes a day? I would bet good money on them having had to redesign that top floor.

Rather selfish of Mom to insist on a huge bathroom while her kids have closets to live in. I don’t get it either. What does a palatial bathroom do for someone? I would have put the master bedroom in that end and done something similar to what George planned: perhaps put the stairs closer to the wall where the kitchen is and break up the upstairs space differently. Perhaps with the bathroom across from the stairs so it’s more accessible from the master bedroom and leave more space for the kids’ bedrooms on the end. And I would have created a drop down step area to the entrance to the bedroom under than low entrance. Dude did not plan it out very well.

everytime these historic listed buildings have a chance of being saved the preservation society makes it needlessly expensive and saddles the new owners with so many restrictions it is not worth the money and hassle. they should be grateful someone wants to preserve it at all....if there were human remains that were historically important, why doesn't the historical society buy up these properties and pay for archeologists to be on site for endless hours in case bones are found?? i appreciate history but there has got to be some common sense by councils and preservation societies or these buildings will literally crumble because no one will take them on due to the red tape.

Precisely. It is manifestly the responsibility of the local preservation societies ot The National Trust who CONTROL the use of these properties to deal with issues like burial sites, archaeological artefacts AND THE COSTS OF COMPLETE SURVEYS, REMOVAL RETENTION AND PRESERVATION OF RECOVERED ITEMS BEFORE SELLING THE SIITES TO PRIVATE OWNERS. No one who buys these historic properties should be held responsible for what the "holding authorities" have FAILED TO IDENTIFY AND PRESERVE. Foisting off thd cost of doing what the "holders" of the property haven't done is a SCAM designed to stick the unwary with the costs and responsibilities but without the AUTHORITY to control the process.
Multiply this case by the hundreds of others who have naively entered committed themselves in "good faith" to save historic bldgs in the U.K.. At the very least, such private purchasers should be able to get mortgages at TOKEN INTEREST that covers the complete cost of historic, archaeological and preservation work. At the VERY LEAST. .

IF the government or some group thinks they could have just shut him down when he was going to save a building than they need to put their own money up front and buy the building themselves. There is a disconnect that should not happen and that before people buy the property they need to know all the loops you have to jump through including all the people who will have a say on what you can and can't do. Of course just as soon as sometimes suckers stop buying these building and they continue to fall down, someone will wake up that it is better to work with the buyer than act as dictator. Do not complain about losing historical buildings when you make it too hard for people to live in. If you want complete say than buy it yourself.

The key wasted space is the upstairs hallway. Just put a center dividing wall and you have two equal rooms and there still could have been bunk space - and if only for storage. Everything has already been said about the bath. What else all could have been done? I'm guessing a second staircase up from the kitchen area. If each bedroom had their own sinks, then maybe a downstairs toilet and shower stall would have been quite sufficient - albeit a second head in the upper churchship would be also useful.

I actually do not understand Britains obsession with the past to the point of making it almost impossible for people to revive long abandoned and derelict properties. If this guy had not bought the old church it would have eventually fallen down into absolute ruin. Yet they come in at his expense to dig up old bones. Those graves should be moved to an active church.
He ended up with a fairly decent home except for the oversized bath and that ridiculous arch which could have been enlarged and easily reinforced.
I think the wife's emotional and seemingly irrational reaction was predictable since she was working two jobs and caring for the boys.

Well she can always use those two bedrooms as a walk-in closet for herself once the boys move out. And I hope she isn't surprised when they chose to live in expansive open apartments with walls of windows. Anxiety attacks? Good God. I would never have expected these two clueless individuals to have completed this project.

I think this couple didn't have the ability to see the overall picture, neither from the perspective of the size of the task they were taking on nor from the prespective of how the space could fit together practically. There really wasn't enough space inside that church to put a floor above and use that archway as a doorway. Maybe they could have dug out the ground floor level, but then there would have been steps going down that would have taken up a lot of interior space. Even if they had taken George's advice about the layout - which they should have - bending down to walk into their main bedroom would have gotten frustrating pretty quickly, if they could have even gotten the furniture in. After working so hard and going beyond their financial means to make a home that was then miserable to live in every day, a family would enevitably end up totally messed up.
For the size of the church, I think it would have been much better to have one room open plan living in the nave and bedroom with ensuire wet room in the altar area.

George questions Garith's building......dude...I am super impressed he has an attitude of getting the thing freaking done. I'm like the opposite. I think he had gotten so far considering all the things hitting him at once.
I don't think the arch is the biggest deal especially because it was probably more important to get the rest of the floor the level they wanted it. Not only that, but they can make it bigger maybe.

    • @charliefoster3221
      @charliefoster3221 Před 2 lety

Drop the floor, the ceilings are high enough. The effect of the church is lost with the smurf door. The dude is simply an ass who only wants to have a good time laughing and joking. Doors do matter, if he was in Canada, he would have a stop work order tapped to the front door. We have serious building codes here--that door would have been changed or loose the building permit. It's not just about coolness, it's about saftey for the home owners.
