DIY Repair: Fixing a Broken Fishing Rod!

- Breaking your favourite rod should not really be the end of its life and as rod manufacturers tend to discontinue rods like they are fashion not tools, repairing is a great alternative to the bin. I keep a little store of salvaged rods to reuse them to repair others and this case the rod wasn't actually mine, it was repaired for charity that takes people who need a bit of R&R out into the great outdoors the best medicine.
tools and materials
salvaged donor fishing rod to make the new joint, you can get bits on ebay but i have my own collection
resin: for the glue up I used PRO-Glu rod building expoy, but 30 min epoxy works well
Thread: black nylon grade A, Fuji metalic sliver
Coating resin: three coats of Threadmaster rod finish epoxy
Turning motor; Converted microwave turntable motor bought from ebay - Sport
These videos are so calming, it’s nice to see that a broken rod can be repaired
It’s so awesome you’re uploading again
I try
You make it look effortless Paul, keep the videos coming, cant wait to see what you tackle next.
practice and video editing make up for a few things, cheers
Just that easy, eh?! Your work is quite detailed and amazing! Thank you for bringing us into your shop and showing us your amazing talent!
Thank you very much!
Great video thanks - tidy Job. A mate broke his 15ft Carbon Continental rod about 6" from the tip, and said "if you want to repair it, you can have it". It was a fibreglass tip so no way to put anything inside. I managed to buy a length of Carbon tube near the right diameter to fit over the outside. I had to gently ream the tube a fraction to get it to slide down where it needed to be, and epoxied it in place. That was a year ago and the rod still casts & works well. Stay safe & well - Dave. 👍👍
i am always a bit nervous for the first few casts and then I kind of forget the repair over time, nice idea with tube over, thanks
I did few rods this way, but your work is superb, great to have you back
thankyou
Awesome. I have a Shakespeare top of the range Boron Match rod from the 80s that turned up new with the handle section broken about half way up. After watching your video I do believe it is repairable.
Such a pleasure to see a post from you. Hope all is well. Great video thank you!
Thanks
Those vids are always so mindcalming, great job on this rod.
Glad you enjoy it!
Always looking for something to mix epoxy in, the bottom of a can, brilliant sir!
"The art of repairing" Thanks for sharing sir..Awesome job..
Thanks 👍
Smooth as all heck. Weirdly satisfying to make something that's been broken whole again. tight lines and bendy rods 🐟
i know it is an odd thing these days, i always get a few 'throw it away comments' so it nice to hear the other side, thanks
So many useful ideas in 1 video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Good to see you. Hope you are well.
Exelente campion muy buen trabajo gracias por compartir tus vídeos saludos y bendiciones
You did a beautiful job on that rod. Thank you for a great video
Thanks for watching!
Wow... fixed... awesome.. 👍
You're a master of the craft for sure. Great fix for lighter rods but it wouldn't hold fighting tropical monsters like a 80-150lb tarpon.
this is a lightweight rod so I am using lightweight materials and a lightweight carbon insert, but the principle hold for heavier rods, you need heavier inserts that match the action and more layers of tow, there are companies that do this, for expensive game and fly rods
Beautifully done.
Thank you! Cheers!
Trens de Pesca - Brasil - Trabalho bem executado. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video you made what I would call a difficult job look easy
these can be a fiddly pain in the a**, thanks
Ha ha - Cool to see you have a whole bin with broken rod pieces - It surely makes everybody realize that you have experience with rod repairs :D Great job on the movie - Classic PA style - Lovely to watch
Thanks 👍
Great skill and knowledge 👌
Thanks a lot
Just what I need to see. 👍
Espetacular 👏👏👏👏
Amazing greetings from Indonesia🇮🇩👍
Thanks Paul!

thank you, i will contact you on telegram
We missed ya! Hope you're doing well :)
yep i am ok, finding a bit more time to make videos, thanks for watching over the years
Perfect
they don't repair bridges this well
Casualmente. Vengo llegando a casa de pescar y una barracuda me partió la puntera de la caña y me consigo este vídeo! Gracias!
Gracias
awesome
How do you do a one piece if you can’t slide the connecting piece through? Would I be safe just putting a smaller chunk in between and epoxy it?
Terbaik memang
terima kasih
Great video, do you recommend any particular 2 part epoxy resins for rod repairs?
I used PRO-Glu rod building epoxy, for the joint this is a pretty standard 40 minute epoxy i would get whatever is easy for you in small amounts, i used finishing epoxy for the whippings, cheers
Incredible job what an art that is! Where do you get the graphite for carbon fiber inserts from?
these are off cuts, my day job is ina fishing rod factory
Sorry if this is a dumb question but what's the purpose of the thread?
it covers the break and any lose fibres and with the resin adds reinforcement, thanks for asking
Where do I get that carbon filler rod you used?
ebay, or another broken rod, or a rod builder
This is so cool! What is the purpose of the thread here? What if you skipped that part what would happen?
it is a little bit extra reinforcement and also binds the split ends together
hi is there a way to pull back the blank from the rod after you glue it together, mine kinda not straight and i want to make it straight 🤔
warm it with hair dryer and pull
@@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman Thx very much 🙏
How many mm for metal rod can put in fishing rod?
Super 🎣
Wouldn't the repaired portion now get extra stiff and augment the overall rod action?
not really, it won't be perfect but to be honest after a few casts you kind forget the repair is there
When doing that, do you lose sensitivity in the rod?
i would of thought so but in use it is not something I have noticed
@@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman okay. I was gonna do the same for a rod I bought from Japan that broke during Shipping.. I was just wondering how your experience with it was before I tinker
Nice video have you ever tried to wrap carbon fibre over the area where you joined the two parts of the rod maybe for extra strength?
I have put a carbon sleeve
yes, i have used carbon fibre tow on other rod repairs, but generally where the break is further away from guide and i don't want to use thread
@@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman Ok great stuff! If the Rod's tip brakes like 2 inches from the top what would be the best way to fix it I don't really want to make the rod shorter by cutting it off to the nearest eye I want to keep the original length but the inside hole of the rod is very small and I don't really like to fix it with a solid alan key or a drill bit inside the blank.
can I use the epoxy resin for guide on this?
Yes you can!
Awesome.. Now give me your address so i can send you three of my broken rods 😂

Огонь!
маленький огонь
do you offer rod repairs??
Hello👍wasn't it enough if only the area where it was broken was covered with thread?
probably, but it was very close to the guide foot so it was easy to wrap up over the guide foot
🙋 🙋
Do you sell?
No sorry
😮😮😮😮
All that epoxy costs more thsn the rod. And time is not free
maybe that's the price of enjoying myself
Could just buy another rod ……..just saying
Please excuse my skewing, but I see that you have a decade of experience. Have you ever considered reposting some older videos to get more bites.. I mean new viewers?
It is an interesting question, and i suppose i go with what i am enjoying doing now, and what i can fit in between the all the other stuff i have to do, like a job, a family, and occasionally some fishing. Editing is probably the hardest part of making any video and takes a lot longer than filming, so with many older videos it might just be better to start from scratch. A lot of the things i used to do i would probably not do in the same way as like everyone else I am learning as I go. Thanks for a thought provoking question, cheers
So that is what the bottom of soda cans is for.
apparently, i only figured this out lately
JUST BUY ANOTHER.
no
All that for a fake repair that completely changes the action of the rod?
Теперь не буду выбрасывать банки пока не использую их под эпоксидку!)))
