  • Today I hiked Mt. Jefferson! I took the Caps Ridge Trail which is listed as one of the hardest trails in the White Mountains. It's on the terrifying 25 list! This is my second time on this trail, but the first time taking my dog. After this hike, Kali is now 45/48 of the New Hampshire 4,000 footers!
    Total distance - 4.84 miles

    Caps Ridge is probably the best bang for the buck in the Whites. With it's high starting elevation you are above treeline fairly quickly and the views are superb. We did it years ago and despite it being tough it's one of my favorite trails in NH. Enjoy the channel. Keep up the good work! Keep on 4-wheelin' Kali.

    Loved Jefferson. Longer, harder, more beautiful than it first appears. Secrets about the mountain, spirits of nature, forces connecting the inner workings of people to trees, the ground, standing water puddles, roots of trees, bark types and textures, animal trails, habits of the wind, the communication between trees, ways to expand a person's range of psychic unity to the landscape, and utterances of divine origin from the environment, can be sensed there. I probably missed a few other types of secrets, too, in this list. I also appreciated your pace shown on this hike.

    Did Caps Ridge Trail via the Link August 2022. Unfortunately, probably my last hike in the presidential/Whites, as the trip down induced eventual sciatica pain where hiking to that extent/extreme no longer seems feasible. Had not too much problem going up, but the going down was constant "controlled falling" - i.e., fighting gravity, where one either slips, or, just pure downward shock reverbarates up your spine. At age 62, I really hate to leave this behind, as my 20 year old heart is still in the mountains, but the 62 year old body says otherwise.

    Man, you had great weather! Years ago a friend and I climbed Jefferson on a crappy day. Started up Caps Ridge Trail then traversed across the Links Trail (post holing in old snow all the way) and climbed the Castle Trail to the summit, where there was no view. We descended the Caps Trail in a light drizzle, and realized it would’ve made more sense to go up it than down it! Killer hike. Great to finally see the views, thanks to your video!

    I hiked that trail a long time ago, and it was pretty tough, but it's the exposure to the elements that make it challenging. I did it on a warm-ish fall day in the 1980s. I would get sweaty, and then the wind would come up and freeze me. When I got down, I had a bad sun/wind burn. No doubt that, if I did it now, approaching 70, it would be
    Wicked Hahd! 😉 Thanks.

    I can relate to what you said about "no matter how far you walk, it just keeps getting farther away." The first couple of times I hiked Old Rag Mt. in Shenandoah NP (Virginia), the false summits kept fooling me into thinking I was at the top. No dice. But it makes it that much more satisfying when you do actually reach the summit.

    • @TaylortheNahamshaHiker
      @TaylortheNahamshaHiker  Před 3 lety +1

      I've been up Old Rag. I don't recall the false summits, but it's a good climb. Mt. Algonquin in the Adirondacks has a lot of false peaks. I was in a hurry on that hike, the the repeated false peak drove me crazy....

  • @robertbackus2288
    @robertbackus2288 Před 3 lety

    Excellent video. I used to pick Caps Ridge as an easy route to a 5000 fot peak because it starts from the highest altitute trailhead in NH, more than half the elevation between sea level and the summit, but, you are right, it is a very demanding hike despite the high elevation start.

    • @TaylortheNahamshaHiker
      @TaylortheNahamshaHiker  Před 3 lety

      It's a really good deal because of that high elevation trailhead! A quick hike with some of the best views. Although.... I did get a flat tire on Jefferson Notch Rd the first time I drove up there haha

    A few years ago my buddies and I were backpaking up in New Hampshire for the very first time. On our last day of the trip we were hoping to summit Mount Washington as a final hurrah but due to 80 mph winds on the summit, we decided to pass. We took Cap Ridge down off Mount Jefferson. It was a difficult trail going down, especially since we were tired but it was still really beautiful and had some nice views!

    Crazy! Last week you would have been going up there in boots and spikes with winter layers. I hiked last week and also yesterday. I think the temp difference was 37 degrees between last week to this week. Yesterday was an amazing day to be in the Whites in almost mid Nov👍
