Sumo match 1: Ura (pink) vs Shodai (black)
Sumo match 2: Atamifuji (Maroon) vs Hoshoryu (Blue)
Shodai once held the rank of Ozeki, and Hoshoryu currently holds that rank.
Ozeki is the second highest rank in Sumo, the highest is Yokozuna.
The paper they're awarded at the end of the match is prize money. Each one of those envelopes contains something like 50,000 yen (about $500 US) and the number of them they receive depends on how many sponsors there were for that particular match.

Re: salt he mentions... Sumo wrestlers throw salt on the floor before starting the fight as a purification ritual. The salt is believed to purify the ring (called a "dohyo") and chase away any evil spirits that may be present. It is also thought to bring good luck and to protect the wrestlers from injury. The salt throwing is called "shiko," and it is a traditional part of the sumo ceremony.

Regarding the questions in the sumo clip:
"Blue guy" is Hoshoryu. One of the top wrestlers at the moment, although not quite *the* top wrestler yet. He has the second-highest title in sumo, which is ozeki; above that there's only yokozuna. He's the nephew of a former yokozuna (Asashoryu), which is another reason why he's got a lot of hype around him.
The salt (in the bucket that the ringside assistant got out of the way of the falling wrestlers in the first clip) is used in the pre-match rituals; both wrestlers throw handfuls of salt into the ring to "purify" it.
The papers they're handed at the end of the match are actually envelopes, containing prize money (provided by people and companies that "sponsor" specific matches). In matches involving top wrestlers, such as Hoshoryu, those money stacks do get pretty big; the winner of that match, Atamifuji, got to take home a pretty nice stack of cash at the end.

I don't watch sports. At all. Jomboy Media constitutes a full 100% of my sports intake and has for several years. Prior to that I completely ignored all sporting events (except if it affected traffic in an area I was passing through I guess).
So for me, pretty much every game covered in regular breakdowns would qualify as things I missed that I never planned on watching.
But there's still something extra special about these episodes since the variety of sports and levels (ie HS through Pro/international) is so broad.

The MINIMUM salary in the NFL is 750k, which is maybe 5th HIGHEST in Sumo.
There are about 224 O-linemen in the NFL at any point, and the 200th best one is making significantly more than the 10th best sumo.

We'll hopefully get a pretty good idea next year. The heavy weight sumo wrestling champ from last year went all-in playing college football this year, practicing more than anyone else.
He didn't do well enough to be a starter. But hey he learned the game and got his feet under him this year. Maybe he'll stop being terrible next year
If he dominates he'll be fast tracked to the NFL. He isn't really expected to, though.
If a gold metalist reportedly going all-in at football isn't good enough for a bad college team, there's no shot they can make it in the NFL.

Any chance you can do a ad read that doesn't involve a disclaimer about addiction? You know a nice brainless Raid Shadow Legends read that everybody can skip.

real gambling is still a lot more profitable than digital loot crates. so, until mtxs are considered the same as gambling by the US it will continue to have that disclaimer. the US loves gambling and alcohol commercials

For the behind the back interception: The knee being down only matters if an opposing player makes physical contact with him or he is intentionally giving himself up.

    • @akrakenreleased
      @akrakenreleased Před 6 měsíci

That's only in pro rules. In college and high school rules, if the player has the ball, and the knee touches, the play is instantly dead. This is likely a safety thing. You'll see times where a guy is home free, trips up, and the play is dead even without him being touched. Jomboy isn't a football rules expert, but he knows that there are variations of the rule depending on the league, but doesn't know the specifics of this league, hence why he asks the question.

the only sport where it's unusual to catch a ball without a glove is baseball. And baseball players do uncommonly catch barehanded

There are correct catching techniques to reduce the pain. But I have seen a dislocated finger before. The guy was trying to stop a shot. I'm sure it's happened a number of times.
