I was operating the center field tight camera for this! I was the one that zoomed in on Yadi, knowing this was going to be a serious play. It was only my fifth MLB game behind a camera of my career.

Remember this. The original purpose of Yadi standing up so early wasn't to get Joc at 2nd, but to let the runner on 3rd base know that he is fully aware of what play is coming, so when the steal attempt happens, the runner on 3rd thinks twice about rushing to home plate on a throw to 2nd.
The main goal is preventing runners from advancing, whether if it's by throwing runners out or by preventing them from attempting to steal.
FANTASTIC point! Not a force, so if the runner at third comes home on a double-steal, he could beat a rundown tag-out from second and score the run.
They were so stunned and frozen in their tracks when Yadi stood up that they thought maybe he was calling time. Instead, he called a pitch out and made the runner and the managers look stupid for calling that steal. Yadi nodded at Goldy because he knew exactly what was going on, and he probably already warned them about it on the mound visit, too. Goldy gestured with his own nod to go ahead and throw it. He didn't shrug confused, he tilted his head right as if to say, "Ok, go ahead, bring it this way!" Goldy was going to go with whatever Yadi wanted to do, because it's Yadi.
There's not many guys in history who had the baseball IQ and awareness that Yadi had.
He even proved it his rookie year in the 04 World Series when he caught Manny Ramirez trying to steal signs. Yadi backed down from nothing!
He was a defensive genius, had a rocket arm on pick off throws, and could hit well, too. He even stole a few bases despite being the slowest guy in the league. He just knew when to catch them sleeping. One of the greatest ever behind the plate, no question!

Very cool. An obvious action that communicates 'I see what you're trying to do, don't do it because I'm ready'. This also is apparently done by some prey animals like the Pronghorn and the American Woodcock, they do a very strange and distinct movement when they see a predator nearby to forestall their attack, trying to tell them that it's not worth attacking because they're alerted to their presence and the attack will fail.
Also Yadi likes to throw pick offs at first and I think he was thinking he’d catch Joc at first, but he went to second anyway so it was just an easy out
Yadi is one of the greatest catchers just smart and athletically gifted. Cardinals got another HOFer with him.

Showing the importance of a good catcher. He did stand up a little early but it still worked out.
I think that’s because they wanted the rundown to score the run. So if he stands up halfway, he can mess up the whole plan because obviously he knows. The runner is now in no man’s land, with the shortstop charging at him.
Why isn't this akin to stealing signs? Why do players get super upset if pitch signs are stolen but yadi is praised for this?

@@h3kno I have no problem with players on the field "stealing/reading" signs. I do have problems with teams using electronic means to steal signs.
@@h3kno You can steal signs all day, if all you use is your brain. Its when you use cameras or spies in the stands with binoculars that there is a problem. Watch what happens when there is a runner on 2nd. The catcher changes signs or talked to the pitcher and they agree to the pitches before hand so there are no signs.
Even in his final season, Yadi shows why he is one of the greatest minds to ever play on the diamond.
His cannon is still a military grade auto-tuning LASER. IMO still the best in baseball, probably would of got Joc at 2nd off a changeup in the dirt. If the Giants don't make it to the promise land this year I'm pulling hard for the Cards.

This was the pitcher's fault. Yadi doesn't know when he is going to come home. When he stands up, it means he is ready to receive the pitch. Given the situation, the pitcher has to come home immediately. It's a pitch out, so he doesn't need to concentrate on location or the runner. Throw the ball to Yadi right away, dummy.
The batter was screening the runner's view of Yadi. Doesn't explain why no one else on their team didn't call off the steal, though.
Yadi in his prime would have thrown him out from his knees but now he’s a bit older his knees are hurting a bit more so he need the pitchers to start speeding up after he calls the pitch 😂

A first ballot HOFer is essentially a player that gets elected on their first year, usually reserved to the greatest players of their generation or ever.

Ive chosen to watch some baseball for the first time in my 27 yr life. I actually really enjoy it after learning so much from Jomboy and the context to make each aspect of pitching, hitting, and catching intriguing. Plus the surrounding storylines and dramas and umpires makes baseball a very complex yet subtle enterprise. It reminds me of chess but with the competitive aspect of football that im used to. Maybe even more competitive. The psychology of baseball players is still a mystery to me and unlike any other sport ive seen. Maybe its just the coverage of the sport or the time between plays when you watch them but also interviews ive seen of ex baseball players becoming world class endurance athletes from the competitive mindset of baseball. Jason caldwell for example only played college baseball then got injured and picked uo rowing. Almost made the Olympics after only 3 yrs then went on to set the world record team boat crossing of the atlantic and Pacific. Sorry for the rambling just been watching football yrs completely ignorant of the elite level of baseball players hmm

Absolutely love catchers. Pitched in high school and had a catcher I could not stand off the field, but he had a baseball IQ like I've never seen, and he was an absolute dog behind the plate. Would constantly be chirping with the batters and talking up the ump, my strike zones were always a bit bigger when he was catching, absolutely loved pitching to that guy.
The only thing that I focused on is why you couldn't stand him off the field?

Yadi was an amazingly smart catcher a decade ago. Now that he has continued that legacy for this long puts him in the conversation for one of the greatest baseball minds of all time.
Just a great baseball IQ. Reads the field the other team and executes. The only other player I saw do this with such dominance was Keith Hernandez

Yadi's love of the game and ability to read the situations is what makes him so great. Love the analysis of the non-verbal communication too. One thing I want to point out, is that Yadi for away with standing up so early because he used the left handed batter to block his stance. Being limited to seeing Yadi's feet rubber thought he was good to go.... He just d didn't know it was only 10 feet before the 2nd baseman already had the ball. Lol
I'm a diehard fan for the Cardiac Cardinals, but it has been so awesome to watch Yadi, Wainwright, and Puljols over the years. They have natural abilities for the game and will be sorely missed.

@js2010ish imagine that while preparing for a game against India, England coaches find out that Ravichandran Ashwin has a habit of throwing his carom ball regularly in the third over of his spell, so they will instruct the batsmen to be vigilant towards it if they're facing Ashwin's third over, so if they know it's coming, they can punish it by hitting a six or four.

This breakdown is absolutely fantastic and it shows the work Yadi puts in when he’s not behind the plate and like we’ve said his baseball mind is just absolutely incredible! I’m so lucky I’ve got to watch Yadi game after game season after season for his entire career! How lucky is that? I’m going to to the game next Wednesday to watch Yadi and Waino break the all time record for battery starts! I already know I’ll be crying right from the beginning and I’m looking forward to it!

I tend to say "Yadi is baseball itself". My two favorite plays in baseball are runners thrown out at 3rd from the RF and backpicks (thanks to Yadi). I really can't believe how people say he's overrated based in pure numbers. I love stats and stuff, yet, that simply ain't all, the advantages you get by having Yadi on the field or clubhouse/dugout easily surpass the natural decline on his statistical performance.

when you go back and watch previous clips to see if the scouting report was true, that's the kind of extra insight that makes this breakdown better than others. You can tell more effort went into it and it's appreciated.

I was at this game! It was actually the first Cards game I attended and after the foul ball I told my mom “Yadi’s gonna get him on this next one I can feel it.” So cool to see him in action in person and to see it covered by Jomboy!

It didn't seem like much of a secret after a meeting on the mound, whispers at first base, a couple of head nods and a giveaway stand up.
Keep in mind that the pitcher doesn’t know there’s a pitchout so Yadi had to stand up early. If he does it during the delivery, it’s too late and the pitch might be too close to the strike zone.
Could be, but in every level I ever played at, the thumb or a fist meant pitch out. I find it hard to believe they don't have a sign, allowing him to sell it more. Unless he made the last second decision after giving the sign.

Was at this game, under the brown and crouppen sign deep right bleachers. Sun never stopped and I was amazed at the effort these guys had on the field. Glad I made my Jomboy debut!

My HS Coach had us work both sides of that play way, way back in 1970s! We had another options where the SS cut it off if there were less than 2 outs.

Lifelong Giants fan but this play is still pretty impressive. We've had so many good battles with Yadi over the years
Giants have had the Cardinals number. I think it was the 2015 series where bochy absolutely out managed matheny. Just frustrating to watch from the cards perspective. The teams were pretty evenly matched, Id give a slight edge to the giants maybe, but we weren't going anywhere with matheny managing. Love the giants organization, probably my second favorite team. Happy when they won the WS. I also always root against the dodgers for some reason, don't know why lol

I heard a story from Bengie and Jose Molina, Yadi's older brothers who were both also MLB catchers. Someone asked them if their younger brother would be as good a catcher as they were. They stopped and said, Yadi is going to be a way better catcher then either of us. They said that about their younger brother, and they were right.

In fact, he’s very similar to Pudge Rodriguez-great fielding, throwing, contact hitter, historically durable…Rodriguez had a fair bit more power but otherwise they’re the same player

It sucks (for fans) it's his last season but with his record of excellence on the field and just being a catcher of this caliber and durability he earned and deserves retirement. Although I have a hunch he's still going to be involved in MLB somewhere.

@@zekejohnson369 There's no reason they can't both get in on the first ballot. Pujols will get more votes because Molina's batting numbers aren't that good, but everybody knows that his defense is historically great. That was good enough for Ozzie Smith, who had worse hitting numbers than Molina.

I would put Molina as my No. 1 defensive catcher, but if I'm going to have my pick of any catcher throughout history, there are a bunch of guys I'm picking over him because they can come close to providing his defense while providing much better offense.

19-years w/ 1 team, 10x All-Star, 9 Gold Gloves, 1737-games behind the dish, 2-WS. St. Louis needs to have him in black granite, squatting behind the plate, motioning like a field general, Lincoln Memorial size, outside the stadium w/ Musial - another man.
