Skating Across Lake Ontario

- 2 Years ago me and my friend Jon Curow heard that the weather in Toronto was going ot get cold enough for Lake Ontario to freeze over.
We got intel from someone on the Toronto Island who skates there frequently, so we made the trip out there and it was one I would not soon forget.
Caution: Make sure to CHECK ice thickness before you go out! Ice must be at least 4 inches thick to be able to skate on.
Song: Of Good Fortunes

Knowing my luck, if I went there to skate the Zamboni guy would show up and yell at me to step off the ice.

Yeah it almost looks fake how good it is. Was even more amazing in person!
Pavel Barber I thought the same thing 😂 it did look almost animated

@@bubbleplane7634 Dude shut up with your shipping lane bullshit. Nobody cares. He was out there for a short period, would have been able to leave the ice if he saw a ship in the distance.
Bubble Plane Your trolling
This by far the most Canadian thing I've ever seen. I live just by the Niagara falls USA side and love to go to the islands in the summer. The view is absolutely incredible from there. Amazing video sir
When I tell you if I had 24 hours to live this is where I’d want to spend it.

I thought you were you gonna literally skate across the entirety of lake Ontario
@Dan Smulders from the description: 2 Years ago me and my friend Jon Curow heard that the weather in Toronto was going ot get cold enough for Lake Ontario to freeze over.
Okay boomer
I want to skate there someday, im from Germany. When is it frozen in winter which months?

Bubble Plane god ur a sad man
You're welcome to come anytime Toronto is a beautiful city in all 4 seasons summer fall winter and spring.
Im living between cologne and aachen, never played icehockey
but skating on that lake definitely just made it onto my bucketlist
The dislikes are from the people who fell through the ice
You fall through the ice you’re pretty much dead so I doubt it
Bubble Plane shut up about vessels
Bubble Plane it’s like you’re in love with vessels
Bubble Plane what’s your problem? Don’t see any signs saying no skating shipping hazard
Bubble Plane hahahahaha that’s great😂
This is one of the most beautiful Canadiana videos that I've ever seen. It literally brought tears to my eyes. You took me right back to my childhood when skating around a frozen pond with a stick and puck always felt like pure freedom. All problems would disappear and your senses would become completely alive. Absolute perfection!!!
I am Canadian too and that view is amazing! Great vid!
This is what being a 'canadian' is all about. Throughout the country from the maritimes to the prairies and to the pacific, from inuvik to point pelee there are people everywhere skating on frozen lakes and ponds. It is the quintesential Canadian activity which embraces the cold and warms the hearts and dreams of boys and girls everywhere. Skating is both powerful and magical in what it allows one to do. It is where children learn to dangle the puck, to glide across the open expanses, and feel the hidden power in themselves that pushes them farther and faster than they could ever dream possible. It is an adventure to skate on a cleared patch of lake ice and then learn that there were no limits to how far one could travel beyond that patch. It is an activity whose timetable is only limited by the winter night that falls earlier than desired. I, too, grew up gliding on ice, even if it was just a patch in the back yard lit by the porch light. I never grew tired of learning my limits and then pushing past them and then admiring those who excelled.
This video gives me chills, absolutely euphoric.
Thanks I'm so happy to hear that!!i appreciate it
That is so beautiful. Words cannot express the beauty, serenity, majesty, and Canadiana of it. Makes me yearn to be there, doing exactly that!
I love hockey.
That's all I could think about when I was out there! haha. I was just like "Man I love this game!" So lucky to have it in our lives :)
Pavel Barber, I know right? I just started playing bantam hockey 2 months ago, and I love it.this game is a gift bro. Hockey is an amazing thing to do to get rid of stress, and just feel free.
It be great for a game until someone misses a shot and the puck just goes forever lol
Mr. Harty Jr, why?
Rocket Ryder, yeah lol. It’s also a lot more fun for me, since I’m 6 feet tall in bantams without skates on, and I’m often among the tallest kids at games, so it’s hard for people to knock me down.
As usual you made it perfectly esthetic and enjoyable! Congrats for the work you and your team!!
Fan from France 👍🇫🇷
Thanks so much! Jon Curow is amazing at operating the camera. Can't thank him enough for capturing these memories.
Who was the absolute bender that disliked this amazing video smh

Bubble Plane can you please explain ? You keep commenting about this shipping hazard
I’m not from Canada
Holy man this looks beautiful I love hockey and this is the best way to play it just relax with the boys and have a good time such a good way to let loose and forget about stress
That is exactly why I love ODR SZN!
man,... that's sick playing with the puck with the cn tower in the background, really epic and could make a sick motivational poster hahahaha keep smiling Barber!
Thanks! Yeah doesn't get much better for promotional pics than that! I got a bunch :)
Coming from the UK I can only dream of luxuries such as this 😪😪

I love how easily you can jump over a bumpy spot, you got some serious talent both in skating and in handling the puck. Breathtaking background view of Toronto, this video is awesome, imagine showing this to your grandkids when you're old, thank you for sharing! Greetings from Quebec city!
as someone who just got into skating this made me wonder if i should even keep trying. but then i got a ton of inspiration from it. Im old (19) to start hockey but im never gonna give up!
Never too old Maverick. Come to Toronto and learn fast .....
Maverick Kennedy bend your legs and widen your stance, then just practice whenever you can to get better balance and more comfortable with skating because it’s so much fun when you go fast, just don’t give up and keep trying
Hey pav love this video been here since 24 k subs your still my favourite CZcamsr your vids always get me fired up for hockey so much so I bought the marsblade for off ice training much love from PEI

I grew up in Western NY on Lake Ontario. Beautiful video.
What a beautiful view of the Toronto skyline while skating!!!
Wait till you get to the other side
yeah hell fall right through
Bubble Plane stop
You would have to skate on a regulation sized rink length ways (200 f or 60.96) 1399.27822 times skate to cross Lake Ontario width ways (85.30 km or 279855.643 feet). It wouldn't take the same amount of energy though because of the stopping in the rink.
@@bubbleplane7634 did he break international waters?? do you know how big lake ontario is, you can't even see the city any where in the US.
Bubble Plane you’re an absolute fucking mongoloid, only place you can see Canada from the US is Buffalo and you’re sure as hell not looking at Toronto lmao
I live in Toronto and everybody i know and people they know play and love hockey and the leaf's. New immigrants who hardly speak English embrace hockey and the leafs the whole city all 7 Million of us is united by hockey and really all 33 Million of us in Canada it's really beautiful. This gave me chills a few times. What an epic day.
It would've been helpful & responsible to advise anyone seeing this & make a disclaimer, that the weather conditions were insanely cold 2yrs ago & that this is not a common occurance & shouldn't be tried in average/regular Toronto winter conditions.
2 years ago Toronto had a major cold spell (Polar Vortex) where temperatures dipped between -25°C & -40°C for a week that allowed for many parts of the lake to freeze over. If I recall correctly, all 4 (technically there are 5, but Lake Michigan & Huron are actually connected) Great Lakes that border Canada & the USA, all completely froze over that year.
~25% according to NOAA www.glerl.noaa.gov/data/ice/#historical
There are 5 great lakes
@@noobmaster-wj3qm via Wikipedia: "...Hydrologically, there are only four lakes, because Lakes Michigan and Huron join at the Straits of Mackinac."
I lived in Toronto all my life and I've never thought of doing this. So gonna try this!
Won't get cold enough this year
I used to do this at Grenadier and Catfish ponds in High Park Swansea. Bumpy as hell and hard on the body even as a tweener.
Brad C how cold does it have to be for the ice to get thick enough?
@@edvins8863 a lake that deep and that fast of a current, I'd say solid week of -30c at least
Brad C wow ok, i guess you could skate closer to the shore atleast?

Dmo27 where can I find this movie
M J it was on Netflix a few years ago, I’m not sure if it still is
Dang I live in Toronto and I had no idea that the lake was frozen lol
Potato Masher I’m literally an hour away from Toronto and there is absolutely no ice to be found. Any reasoning ? Why this guy is skating on a lake and our ponds don’t even have a layer of ice
Toronto is Famous for Ice & Hockey ! It helps if You take the ferry to Snake Island & have an another perspective of The City of Toronto !
97vipa look at the description, this was filmed two years ago.

@@PavelBarber any advice for a young goalie looking for the right path to take to high level hockey
@@christiankleckner8014 My advice to any player regardless of position is to maximize the amount of focus you have whenever you train. When you go through a drill or study technique, do it to the absolute best of your ability. Redefine what you are capable of with each training session and game.

You'd be dissappointed. It rarely gets cold enough long enough for the lake to freeze. When it does, the ice is usually covered in snow. This skatable ice is rare.
