2 Nights wild camping in strong winds, heavy rain and lots of fog! Did my new tent hold up?

  • Our latest wild camping adventure takes us to Galloway Forest park in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. We were originally thinking of going with hammock set ups, but we made some changes to the route and it didn't look like there would be many trees. So I got to give my new NightCat ultralight backpacking tent a test (nightcat.com/products/night-c.... I was lucky enough to win the tent via an instagram competition, but it was delivered while I was cooped up feeling sick. The tent certainly got a good test with the weather! The wind was battering us on the drive up, with lots of traffic reports of strong wind causing problems. We probably underestimated it as the start was sheltered, but it got very strong as we ascended! Our plan was to head to Loch Enoch from Glentrool visitor centre and head up Benyellary and Merrick - the highest peak in the southern uplands. We then wanted to spend the night on the shores of the loch, with a second day exploring around before heading back on the third day.
But the strong winds and poor visibility made us change plans as we progressed, we were already racing against the sunset and the weather was slowing us down. We also set up just in time to beat the heavy rain that didn’t stop all night. So, we never made it to the loch in the end…but we will return to make it there one day!
We were also hoping for some clear skies as the area was designated the first dark sky area in the UK, but as you will probably be able to see, we didn’t get much break in clouds to see any stars!
As well as the new tent, I had a new Sierra Design sleeping quilt, GSI cook system and Lifestraw peak series water filter. I am a convert to the quilt system now! All the new gear performed pretty well, and I will be doing some videos on my thoughts after some proper testing. A decent approach in Chris until the clag rolled in. At least the tent performed and hey the quilt. That did look cozy. Gotta say a wild descent - no visual and a real bog bash. Love it and that second pitch. Hey, nice and flat. Well, a real wild one out. Very enjoyable - I'm catching up. All the best. Mark

Cheers Mark. It was a hard time out that's for sure. Was hoping the clagged cleared, the forecasts were saying it would but it never did on the tops. I think I'm a full quilt convert now after a few times using it!

@@ramblebob1 A pleasure Chris. It looked a tough one but sometimes these are the most energy filled - yeah the quilt is versatile. Peace out.

It was hard going, but tent stood up strong to it! Was toasty inside! Just a shame to miss out on the views from the top of the mountain!
